New player, old machine. Wondering if there were some basic tweaks/adjustments I can make to maintain 60fps even in heavy traffic/battle. I've searched old threads for info, but a lot of it is aimed at Macs and whatnot, and some of it seems out of date (prefs.ini files? Haven't found anything like that in my install). I don't care too much about high textures/details/shadows, but I would like to keep turret effects, missile explosions, etc. (if possible). Any constructive advice is appreciated.
My machine:
XP Pro SP3 Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz 1.93 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 6600 (PCIe x 16) w/512MB video memory Single LCD Flatscreen at 1400x900 (60Hz) w/DVI input

Upgrade ram and GPU...that's what eve uses the most..... Other than that cranking down settings to native res or below.
Or if you're in fact being cheap...get a new machine, but if that's not an option the other 2 options are cheaper.
Forgot one thing I'm not sure if the 6600 has a "tweaker" that goes with your drivers. You could customize extra settings outside of eve that way too. _________________________

upgrading to a cheap modern videocard would fix your fps issues. Period. Even like a radeon HD4550 which is about 50 bucks online. I know you were looking for software ways to increase fps, like eve graphics options, but I figured I would throw that out there.

So far, it sounds like software fixes are not favored. If upgrading the card is the only realistic option, what can I get away with? Will a 7 series nvidia card make the fps issues go away? 8 series? Or is it irrelevant because of the old CPU/RAM?

Compatibility mostly has to do with Motherboard. Also adding another gig or ram would help too and be cheaper... just make sure to fill 2 slots not 1. Forgot your specs, but I think a 7600, 7800 or 7900 would be ok. 8800 i doubt would be compatible, both MObo wise and power wise. Just try and get a card with at least 512 gpu ram on board, and check your power supply to see what it's putting out. 300? 400? etc etc. If it's too low that limits your card options. _________________________

This is similar to my machine and I can run Eve just fine.
Turn off all turrent and weapon effects, drone rendering, shadows, and put every possible setting to low quality -amazingly Eve still looks good like this.
Also, make sure your overview is set up right for big fights. Turn brackets off when more then 100 people are fighting on the same grid.

Or again, for $50, possibly a bit less depending on where ya look online, you can get a cheap modern vidcard, which while low end by todays standards, is far and away better than the card ya got in there now. With that you could have eve running perfectly fine, without even turning down graphics.

Thanks to all for the input. I guess my choice is either living with most settings, including the effects I'd rather keep, turned off, or making some (hopefully low cost) hardware upgrades.
Just to expand a bit on the machine, since mention was made of power supplies and mobo compatibility with any proposed video cards:
MSI P6NGM-L Motherboard (Socket LGA775; 2 DDR2 slots allowing 4GB Max) 600W Power Supply
XP Pro SP3 Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz 1.93 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 6600 (PCIe x 16) w/512MB video memory

Not a horrid setup. Even a Radeon 4850HD would do you some good. It's around $50, and I can run 2 clients on max settings with zero lag issues. EVE is more graphics intensive than anything, and that setup looks like it can handle EVE well if you upgrade the card only.
Software wise, use the optimize for performance thing, then just tick on what you want. Beware that having shaders on low can have odd effects in-game (invisible gates, missing textures, etc).
Edit: Do NOT bother upgrading the memory to 4GB unless you go 64-bit, which I recommend against unless you upgrade to Vista since XP's 64-bit version has crap driver support. It's also likely dual-channel, which means you have to go 4GB if you do upgrade, but will only be able to use ~3.1GB.

Im telling you bro that your comp will handle Eve will little problem at all if you only get a better vid card. Even a cheap one like radeon 4550 or something. Or if ya can find one cheap enough a 4850.
