I hear people moaning on the forums quite alot recently for one reason or another. But what is it that keeps you playing EVE? What brought you to the game in the first place? What is it that you LOVE about EVE?

Nice thread.. Too bad it probably gets trolled soon but lets give it a try ;)
Hear constant opinions about Eve beeing a harsh place and all.. Well I actually like Eve because I experience quite the opposite. Met some really helpful friends and noticed quite some people willing to help another one out without backstabbing ya or something else. So it can be quite a friendly place after all.
Been into PvP just recently and really starting to like that. So its constant about new things to discover for me ;)

I don't really love anything about it. 'Cept the Forums.
The key factor is that I can continue to train my character with minimal input, and since some of the level 5s take around a month to complete - I don't have to even log in for a month.
If i can't afford something, I don't have to grind... I can just buy a GTC and go back to months of training again.
Basically, the best part about EVE is that I never actually have to play it.

The fact that CCP is spending more time locking threads, than fixing their frell-ups, which is one of the root causes there are a lot more threads from peeved off paying customers being locked today.

I've worked a few places that did this. Mostly because if something very technical comes up on the forums, would a community manager be able to answer it? Probably not. Better to have people in the know watching all the time than to have to relay through a swamped bottleneck of a dude.

I just love Sci fi, ever since i played Homeworld long time ago.i learned of this game a few years ago but couldn't play it because my computer then couldn't handle the game. Last april my daughters bought me the retail box for my birthday. I just love this game, people have called me a troll and dumb or even told me to quit playing EVE on these forums, I couldn't care less. This is MY game and i love every minute of it.EVE is something that grows on you.
Alot of people are moaning and whinning about how their favorite gimmick as been nerfed down or how bugs spoils their way of playing . Wake up people if you think this game is buggy try one of the recent releases of those really big game companies I say Thank you CCPfor making this one of the greatest games ever

I love EVE because:
- There are no "classes" or "archetypes". You simply make your own.
- Skill training isn't connected with boring grind
- The devs don't give us to much of this crappy marketing talk like in most MMOs (a la "dear customer" even though 99% of the players are 13 year old pre-pubescent slaptards that can't even read). If they screw up they'll usually admit it and if they don't know wtf is wrong then they wont lie by claiming they're working on the issue. They ask their (hopefully) mature (enough) community for help (as it should be imo).
- CCP seems way more casual and "normal" then most other companies that run MMOs. They're simply a bunch of a few hundred tech nerds that wanna make as cool a pewpew game as possible and not simply earn as much cash as possible.
- EVE is the only game of it's kind with a proper strategic level to the conflicts/wars etc. Most games only have a tactical/operative level at best and idiotic button mashing at worst.
- EVE has an economy run entirely by the players from resource gathering right up to supercap or t3 manufacturing.
- EVE doesn't have idiotic rules that forbid scamming, spying, suicide ganking etc. which on the one hand makes it a pretty harsh place but on the other hand also makes it worth playing because it keeps you on your toes.
- Players have way more freedom to do what ever the hell they like in EVE and are not forced to all run X quest in Y area to reach the same goal Z. Everyone can make their own goals and quests if they like or they can simply go blow the ****e out of everyone they see.
- EVE is way easier on my real life then most other MMOs I've tried. If I'm with a normal fleet (and not some highly specialized gang) then I can pretty much always go AFK or log off without anyone giving me grief. I may lose my ship but that will only hurt me and not prevent other people from having fun. Ofc there are exceptions to this but usually you don't have to be at the PC 100% of the time. You simply warp to a POS, go grab some food and then get back into action.
- The average EVE player (at least the ones I hang around) are all here for the PvP and to dominate their enemies. None of this "lets hold hands and dance around the happy happy lala tree" etc. We're here to own the hostiles either militarily, economically or by any other means necessary. Thats what makes our epeens big.
- There are no Orcs, Dwarfs or other crappy dudes with long ears
- And finally because EVE is the only girl in my life (expect if you count those hooke... let's not).

Edited by: Calrilion on 20/05/2009 10:22:29 I love:
1) The fact that I can train my skills, thereby improving my character, and farm at the same time. 2) Similarly, I can go and run missions, making money, gaining experience, while at the same time be training up on money making skills. 3) The sheer depth and complexity of the game, together with the effort required to accomplish something (anything) meaningful - gives one a greater sense of achievement than I though was possible in a game. 4) The utter laborious nature of everything - nothing says "Think about what you do before doing it" like buying a 300,000isk piece of equipment, only to realise you've bought it from a warehouse 24 jumps away. The saying "Look before you leap" comes to mind - I love it. 5) The sheer scale of the universe - opening the star map for the first time made me fall off my chair. Ok Ok, I didn't fall off, but I did stand up. 6) The fact that I can fly spaceships, shoot stuff with lasers and railguns, cloak and sneak up on stuff (can't do that yet, but I will), energise my shields, and warp between star systems. 7) The fact that I thought I was doing well having gathered nearly 3million ISK 8) The fact that there are aspects of the game that I'll only ever be able to admire from afar - I'll let others reap the incredible rewards of immense time and effort applied, and be quite happy with what I can accomplish with my piddly 2 hours of playtime every second day. Every environment needs characters who are special, it's pointless if everyone can be special.
Yup, I'm pretty new at the game, and was very hesitant when told that it was an immense learning curve, and could at times be very boring, something that most people simply can't get past. But that's actually something that's really got me hooked.
I love that I have to apply myself, I love that there's some effort involved, and I love that if I mess up, there's proper concequences - it's made me play with a heck of a lot more restraint. And sometimes, when I've been in trouble, I've actually rallied myself to get out of that trouble more than I ordinarily would have, simply because I suddenly realise that giving up means I lose my ship, which is costly, and recovering any equipment will be a pain in the butt.
Edit: After reading the post above mine, I must say I agree with a large majority of what was said there as well. Nice post.

I keep playing because EVE Keeps moving. I First joined eve when a friend asked me to watch his ship while he went to the Loo. And what do i love? The fact that with enough determination, I can reach any goal i set myself, and just move onto the next. ___________________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Fixed that for you.
The thing I love most at the moment about Eve is the fact that the playerbase define the atmosphere of each region you might find yourself in.
Gallente space seems relaxed, and friendly, whereas Caldari space is a frantic, busy place.
Amarr space is full of role players, making it perhaps the most interesting part of the galaxy, and Minmatar space has imo the nicest atmosphere, with people scrapping and fighting everywhere.
I could go into detail, but I'm hungry, so perhaps a more well-travelled individual will chip in?
My favourite little corner of space in this galaxy is Cobalt Edge, simply because it is so desolate. To live, or survive out there requires a serious and competent industrial effort, and because of this its just... more fun!

I love that the fact the longer you play, the better it gets and the more options you have. Not regulated to just 2 choics (PVP or Raids). The mature and global player base. Nothing like listening to your German FC and trying to understand WTF he just said. The complexity, 2 years playing and I just learned how to queue an invention job. I love my heart jumping out of my chest as three pirates try taking out my Providence packed to the walls with Trit. I love bumping battleships from stations, 20 jump chases with a tackler on my tail and worthless emails from CCP on my petitions (they always make me laugh).

No perfect FOTM character template, no perfect FOTM ship setup, do what you want to do and if you can make it work for you then go hard. You can get up to speed within a few months and then spend years still improving your character. You dont have to shell out $80 for a new disk everytime they make a major upgrade. A group of one month old newbies in frigates actually stand a chance against a 5 year old vet in a battleship if they get it together. The market system is second to none, compared to having to have a house in the best city or standing in a lagged out city try to auction stuff off. Ingame chat system, you can talk to friends on the other side of the galaxy and you dont even have to be in the same corp. The eycandy.
