I was wondering, how do I best extend how far away my sentry drones can shoot? I know that they will shoot stuff that's up to 250km away, but on my myrm I can barely target anything beyond 68km. Should I extend my range with 1-2 sensor boosters, so I can target something from about 100 km? I think Warden I has about 60km range with 30km falloff, so I should start shooting stuff around 90km.

There's two ranges in question; targetting range and drone control range. Even if you can target that far, you can't set your sentries on a target that's outside the drone control range of your ship so you will probably need to increase both.
To increase targetting range you can train long range targetting, fit sensor boosters and signal amps. There's some rigs and implants too. To increase drone control range, train scout drone ops, e-war drone ops and fit drone link augmentors.

Don't forget the third part of "how far away your drones can shoot" - the optimal range of the drones themselves. Even if you can target 120km with a drone control range of that much, Garde drones will never be able to hit targets that far away. The drones' optimal range can be increased by fitting Omnidirectional Tracking Links in your midslots or the seldom-used Drone Scope Chip rigs - or more fundamentally, by choosing drones with a larger optimal range.

Warden's are the way to go, with mobile drones for anything under 25 km (you won't hit anything anymore with the warden's because of tracking). In my domi with 1 drone link augmentor and not other mods and decent skills I can start popping them at 84 km. Electronic warface drone skill is your friend for that extra bit of control range. --- Sol: A microwarp drive? In a battleship? Are you insane? They arenĘt built for this! Clear Skies - The Movie |

So I'm wondering why you need that drone control range. Shouldn't you be leaving sentries right next to yourself so you can scoop them up at any point, therefore all you need is to increase your own targeting range?

It's because you can't order sentries to attack targets outside of your drone control range.

So basically you need to extend both your own personal targeting range and drone control range to have sentries shoot things that are further away?
Man, that doesn't leave too much space for other items :)

Correct.

Heh, true - but then any time you want to fit some kind of "sniper" setup that pushes things beyond their normal maximum ranges, you tend to use of a lot of slots so nothing unusual here!
