Been here all of almost a week, and upped to full account yesterday. I did my 3 noob career paths. I have my Bantam outfitted with Miner II lasers and my Badger (w/ rail gun) running GSC to some nice quiet little places that I've never seen more then 2 people in local and a dozen open roid fields. Need to correct a CPU shortage to get mining upgrade 1 installed. Do an occasional jetcan for the exceptionally big rock clusters...
I have my Merlin with 2 rockets and a rail with a salvager. Have passive shielding (with recharge enhancers) which lets me do my happy agents mission with severe ease 90% of the missions and actually need to think for the other 10%. Scouting with a bit of ratting for my mining drops.
I make about as much ISK missioning with salvage as I do selling mining results so i have a choice of how to spend my days. Still doing some exploring so still working on finding my way around. I have my learning skills (- empathy) to level 3 and pretty much the basics for the above equipemnt.
So I need to either buckle down and get the remaining learning skills to 5 (for the next 21 days...) or continue as I have pick up a learning here and there while squeezing in whatever skill is needed for my next ship upgrade.
I'll need to bank the 4mil+ per advanced learning book but will definitely be needing to up my ships before then. There are just too many things i want to upgrade before the 70+ days of advanced learning. I'm gonna to go aver my 100% bonus training time if i do just learning so it kinda comes down to how much learning do i want over that amount still in my skill plan?
Should I skill up for my next two tiers of ships? Cruiser (Osprey) for mining and [accepting suggestions here] for PvE action or sit on what I have with minimal upgrades and do the learning?

If the means of EVE for you is to get as many SP as fast as possible, then yes, you should get your learnings up as fast as possible.

Get all your basic learning skills to 4, you do want to max them out eventually but its not gonna hurt you if you get some other basics out of the way first (learning skills are pointless if you can't DO anything in the meantime)
You do want to get the advanced learnings as soon as you can afford them and also train those to 3 or 4 (and also train Cybernetics and get yourself a set of +3 or better implants as soon as you can afford also)
I'd also recommend getting Frigate to 4 and then pick up Cruiser fairly quickly, cruisers are in many ways the workhorses of EVE. You mentioned a CPU issue - make maxing out your Electronics (boosts CPU) and Engineering (boosts powergrid) a high priority as well, theyre two of the most critical skills in the game.
Also get yourself a copy of EveMON from www.battleclinic.com. Its a skill-management program that probably about 90% of the players here use, its a damn handy app. One of the nice things is once you plug in the skills you want, it will tell you exactly what learning skills to train to get the most bang for your time (no point in spending a week training them if you only save 3 days of train time, etc)
If you want to get serious about mining, you'll want to train for a barge (Retriever first, eventually a Covetor and then Hulk).

Dude, whatever you want. As long as you're having fun, it doesn't matter what you do. Each way has it's benefits. And I don't think I have to tell you what those are. It's just a matter of quick advancement now, or quicker advancement later.

Edited by: DavesTheName on 27/05/2009 17:15:29 Everybody tells me to get the rank 1 learning skills to level 4, and then the rank 5 skills to level 1, rather than getting the rank 2 skills to level 1.
The rank 1 learning skills take 3 days and some odd hours to reach level 5 and add only 1 extra point, whereas level 1 of the rank 2 skills only take 21 minutes to train and add only 1 point, so you're getting that extra point for each stat in 1 hour and 40 minutes rather than 20 days.
Also, i've chosen a mining career, which as you said, makes just as much money as missioning and salvaging, and makes even more as you get better mining ships, especially the mining barges and eventually an exhumer.

I really really really hate long training times with a single skill that's longer than one day, so I alternate. I train one skill (like a learning skill) for one day, and the next day I train something else, and the next day go back to the unfinished skill.
I don't recommend training basic learning skills past 4 to start. Once you have advanced learning skills to 4 as well (even level 3 advanced learning skills is often good for starters), then you can train the basic learning skills to 5.
Get into a Cruiser as soon as you can. You will really love it, and you will be able to mine anywhere in hisec with an Osprey, and it can mount 3 Miner II with drones for defense (I put a tractor on it too, so I could drag a jetcan around a belt). Training for a Cruiser will also let you move into a Battlecruiser for doing level 3 and 4 missions (Cruisers are fine for level 2 missions).

Edited by: Hipi Ovi on 27/05/2009 17:44:35 Jei'son: I have frigate 4 queued now. Electronics is at 4 now but still like 20 short to equip the upgrade even w/ cpu upgrade I that I grabbed last night to try to squeeze it on.
I have evemon and eveHQ been playing with both to get a feel for them. (passes the time at work )
By dropping learning to 4 from 5 dropped it to 3d 2h think i like that as a compromise till i round out my skills.
Dave: Good point didn't realize that they needed 4 not 5 for the advanced learning. I can get to lvl 3 in 6-8 hours each much better then 2+ days each for basic 5.
So I'm thinking I'll hit frigate 4 then cruiser 1 (only 33 min). I'll then get basic learning skills to 4. Will queue me through the weekend or first of the week if i need to squeeze in a few things for upgrades. That will give me Osprey Thursday night and maybe the ISK for the advanced learners by end of queue...
