Theoretically, projectile turrets would be fantastic in zero gravity. Explosive shells and such already do tremendous damage, so witht hem not having a curved tracjectory and a near ulimited flgith speed with little to zero drag, it' a great weapon to be used in deep space.
But guns don't work, I hear you cry!? Just pump oxygen ito the firing chamber, and the gun works, or build oxygen into the propellant case, or, use a different propellant!
Guns work!
Also, you proably need missile bombardment skill, that'll get your Rocket DPS higher!

You realize hybrids are just mass drivers that fire metal slugs at really fast speeds? Just like a big gun. They're just fired in a different manner than the artillery and autocannons Minmatar use.
Yes I do realise that which is why I find the whole idea of using "projectile" class stuff to be very stupid.
uuuuh, hybrids are different from mass drivers. :P
In eve Hybrids use a canister as ammo, Railguns launch the shell directly, while particle blasters pump the plasma into a cyclotron and process the plasma into a bolt that is then fired.
projectiles use the same tech that propels their ships to propel warheads at people.
they have the lowest dps in the game

From my semi-not-really-educated perspective of the matter, it's close enough. >:(

The US developed a series of weapons collectively called Gyrojets back in the 60's that used pistol-sized rocket-propelled bullets. It was mainly designed for ground combat and actually saw limited service in Vietnam but it also would have been useful in space had we ever needed to engage in some sort of James Bondian cosmonaut massacre. Whereas a conventional firearm has positive recoil which would propel the shooter backwards in space after firing, the gyrojet is recoilless and thus would not suffer that drawback.
But gravity would still play a part in bullet trajectory even in space, just not to the extent that it would on the ground. If anything the bigger ships in Eve would pull bullets into themselves, or at least into orbit around them.

Edited by: Kadavreski on 30/05/2009 03:02:29 Minmatar have had it easy for too long? Considering the Minmatar have spent most of their history enslaved, being overpowered would be like CCP paying reparations. What's the matter, space too racially diverse for you?

Quote: Watch any Sci-FI, those two weapons ALWAYS cause more damage then bullets. Why do you think they use phasers in Star Trek and turbolasers in Star Wars?
Because their ship drives are able to produce 'near-infinite' amounts of electricity to drive energy based weapons.
This not only allows them to save space in their ships' design by not having to have ammo storage facilities, ammo transport facilities and ammo fitting facilities for their massive weaponry, but also affords them lower-maintenance weaponry and no risk of ammunition explosions within the ship.
The other justifications are numerous.

No. Velocity of an object in space is still dependent on whatever is causing it to move. I would argue projectiles would be silly bad in space at anything but very close range. Hitting a moving object at tens, much less hundreds, of kilometers is going to be a difficult task, even with very high velocity (for projectiles).

I believe the only real justification is that lazors in space are kewl. I know it, you know it, Reagan knew it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Brought to you by the letter ARRR!" |

Either put down that pipe or share it with the rest of us. Yikes, where to begin with this nonsense....I know this is probably a troll post, but here goes just for the hell of it:
- Minmatar have it too easy you say? Yeah sure, because with the stupid split weapons systems and split bonuses on our ships we have to train 2 or sometimes 3 different weapons in order to get the full damage potential from our ships. Ever hear of a little ship called Typhoon? Since you obviously haven't, please go ask an adult and have them explain it to you.
- Most of our weapons operate in falloff which if you've never tried I suggest you do sometime. It's an interesting exercise in concentration fighting in falloff as the weapons have a very narrow range in which they do decent damage. The "sweet spot" is pretty damned small, unlike your point and pwn lasers.
- As for high dps; nope. Not even close. Projectiles have the worst dps in the game right now. Back in the day projectiles had ungodly alpha, but that went out the window a while ago with the HP buff to all ships and CCP's failure to fix the projectile damage formula to take that into account. They also need to be reloaded and it's far, far worse with large artillery. Some of the BC and BS sized arties only hold 13 rounds which means you're constantly reloading, which makes for horrid dps. Let's see now, how often do lasers need a reload?
- If projectiles were so amazing maybe there wouldn't be pages upon pages of people asking for CCP to take a look at re-balancing them. In a recent poll of players in the Game Development forum some of the top issues players asked CCP to address were projectiles.
While it's true that projectiles use no cap and can change damage types at any time, that's a poor trade-off for all the drawbacks. Now back underneath the nearest bridge with you please.
