Edited by: Kinuko on 31/05/2009 19:58:40 This is just in:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/mediatechnologyandtelecoms/5344839/Virtual-world-is-a-real-money-maker.html
"CCP Games has been profitable since 2004, but all profits are currently being reinvested in Eve Online and also into creating World of Darkness, a new online subscription game about vampires targeting an 18-25-year-old, female demographic. "
Apparently quests will involve falling love with a vampire, and romancing with him =P
J/k, as long as CCP don't go Hello Kitty way I prefer social, sandbox WOD online to themepark WOD online anytime. Sandbox part is not known yet but at least we know there will be social elements in WOD online and which is pretty good because P&P WOD contains very important social elements in gameplay.

Hmm, not exactly what I wanted to hear about WoD. On the other hand, with blind speculation and tinfoil-hattery in fashion like it is I remain hopeful that it will have some appeal to grumpy old men as well...

And when the Girls have watched Twilight 1, 2, 3, and probably 4 for a hundreds times on DVD and Blue Ray, they will come to the new WoD Games hoping to find a romantic Vampire in this MMORPG...
... and fall Prey to the coldblooded EVE-Veterans already waiting there.
It would be like feeding them to the Wolves, only more painful, a lot more painful.

I think the targeting of that female demography will appeal to the grumpy old men.

What does targeting that particular democraphic even mean? Most of the current games seem to target males of that agegroup and the games are mostly worthless piles of superficial ****. Can anyone else think of a full price game, that targeted young adult females?

IRL I'd probably fit in quite well with them, yeah (and I'm not talking about looks here), but in RPGs I favour a blend of stealth and social engineering (with violence etc as a last resort), the latter being somewhat difficult for Nosferatus... And since I don't fancy ruling over anybody but myself I think Tremere or Malkavian would probably be better...

hmm...yeah I'm curious exactly what appealing to that demographic would mean...
though given it's followed with this:
Quote: Fashion and design will play a key role in the game
I think I have an idea
oh well, in a year that will no longer be appealing to me 26 is the year I'll finally be free from craving fashion and design in ma games above all else...
...I obviously know zip about marketting (which I'm going to prove with my next sentence) but I kinda wish ppls wouldn't try appealing to a specific demographic...just make whatever you want to make and the demographic will just be whoever understands and relates to your vision...

Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 01/06/2009 08:54:18 I doubt they'd have chosen the White Wolf Vampire setting if they wanted to appeal to the 18-25 female demographic. Last time I checked that world was rather darker and nastier than the female fanfiction filled dreams you'd base a girl-targeted Vampire game on. Now if they announced they were doing a "Twilight" MMO, then yes... but Vampire? I'm not convinced...
However, focus-group research can often be hilariously wrong.

I doubt they will use Material from the "old" WoD, if they don't like to be dragged to the court.
Quote: Fashion and design will play a key role in the game and the group has employed two supposedly well-known Icelandic fashion designers to create virtual "gothic-style" clothing for avatars. The group is hiring 100 more people in the next 12 months û including producers, animators and economists û to create its new virtual world.
I hope they also hire people for content design to break with stupid monotone MMO-quests, which is imho the main reason why girls are not attracted by mmos. In every MMO (even Eve), PVE can be broke down to: - Kill x of y / Gather x drops of y - Talk to x / Bring x to y / Fetch x from y - Gather x
If fancy fashion is the only innovation of WoD and you have to slay 10 werwolves to buy new shoes, it won't attract more women than other mmos. However, WoD was always the choice if you wanted to introduce girls to the geeky world of Pen&Paper RPGs. At least worked for me, and if I look back, most Vampire groups I was in had a balanced mix of male and female players, whereas Hack&Slay games with mind-boggling rulesets where mostly male (except me).
This Hack&Slay playstyle is the basis for most MMOs. Kill monster/ship, get xp and/or loot, kill monster, get xp and/or loot ... until you are incredibly rich and powerful. Sorry to say that, this is typically male. Dungeoncrawling and Power/item-grinding is nothing for ze girlz. But what made WoD different? You could solve a campaign without repetitive Hack&Slay dice orgies. You had to gather information, see who was plotting against you, do your own intrigues, find allies, backstabb allies, blackmail enemies, hide your own dirty secrets etc.
It is like metagaming in Eve, but without the pew-pew. If CCP can catch that style of play, WoD is win. If PVE is just grinding for new highheels and PVP consists of WerwolvesVSvampiresVSmagesVShuntersVSwraith WHOwinSZOMZOMGblobBBBB1!!!!11 it's nothing than emo-barbie online and just another MMO. __________________________________________________

Not all the old WoD licenses/patents are owned by White Wolf anymore. They had "internal issues" years ago. I think that is one of the main reasons, why nWoD started. __________________________________________________

heh. I guess i'd better dust off the Malkavian.
This is a growing gamer segment, and if CCP offers something more tuned to the average member of that demo than the 14-year-old WoW-grind, they win. Also, bringing them here will provide more vic- players for many of our established groups, out of which a few Darwinistic winners will surprise you with their ferocity. On, social experiments, on!

WoD was (is?) a great game, but that was mostly due to its focus on roleplaying. I wonder what the great appeal will be putting it online in computer game form. Roleplaying is somthing computer games are least suited to after all.
Also that reporter is thinking candy rainbows and fluffy marshmellows, which is roughly the polar opposite of either of the WoD settings.
Off topic, I'm glad to hear they (CCP) are going to remain independant. (WTF is with that article? It's all over the place)

Attracting a female player base to MMO's has my vote, and WoD seems like as good a genre to do it in - I remember an early days CCP interview where the lack of female players in Eve was explained along the lines of 'it's a game about spaceships and trading - how would you attract more women to it?' . Got no problem with romance storylines in a vampire game either - after all, Dracula did it long before World of Darkness, and Ann Rice's Lestat stories, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer even; don't think any of them suffered from including romance plotlines and appealing to women. I just trust that CCP will be wise enough to stick with the WoD background fiction and atmosphere and not be tempted to do the Twilight thing. |

You know, peering deep into the future, I get this image:
Isty's at the CCP fan fest in Vegas, suited up and slick as hell, but looking like he's been at it for about 30 hours. In one hand a mostly empty bottle of Grey Goose, the other hand is snot-encrusted blow leftovers. He's falling to his knees in moderate surprise as three Hispanic-Irish women, eye-liner and all, from the WoD game are stabbing him to death with broken mirror shards and letter openers. While this is happening he's laughing maniacally and cursing in Polish, probably something about girls having the balls to do this, asking someone to document this for his next CSM run as an "experience reference", or that this is the second time this has happened.
It's probably the most enviable end I can think of. |

I just trust that CCP will be wise enough to stick with the WoD background fiction and atmosphere and not be tempted to do the Twilight thing.
Dracula was a classic bit of literature. Interview With The Vampire was good, but did descend a bit too much into the gothic cliche. Buffy was teenage girl television, and meant well with having a female action character, but suffered a lot from the limitation of its media. There were a few episodes I saw I thought were quite good, though (like some smiley sound-dampening demons).
Twilight has taken the emo-gothic from Anne Rice's work and mixed it with the teen appeal of Buffy to create a bastardised child fathered by corporate demographics, and lacks any kind of creative soul. So often do executives wheel out the most predictable, brainless mush in the assumption we will greedily swallow any swill they churn out, and so often are they proved right.
Let's hope the game retains the seductive darkness of novels like Dracula, rather than the brightly-illuminated and barely-disguised teenage girl photo-strip. |
