I'm going to start by saying this:
I know that the MacBook is unsupported. I know that there are stickies and a knowledge base. I am not whining or moaning that CCP is unfair or I want my money back. I am only looking for some helpful advice.
I have a MacBook 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of memory running OSX 10.5.7. Lately, Eve has been crashing after 30 min of play...but not a crash recognized by the system as a crash. Rather it seems that the program just quits.
I am running SMC FanControl and Activity Monitor. The CPU temp is usally about 140F (55C) and the memory is only about 3/4 full.
Is this happening to anyone else? Does anyone have anything HELPFUL to tell me?

What's the GPU? If it's the 9400M, then in spite of the lack of official support, you have every reason to expect the game to work. The reason the MB was on the no-support list was because of the lousy drivers for the Intel GMA GPUs.
Anyhow, a lot of people seem to be getting crashes at regular intervals. Your CPU temp is fine - it may be that your GPU is too hot, or that EVE is leaking memory and you've run out of addressing space (this is separate from RAM, 32bit applications get 4GB of address space each). Or it may be something else entirely.
If I were you I'd look at those issues and also do some digging on these forums, though I'm not sure if an answer exists. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

Did EVE crash every 30 minutes under 10.5.6?
Did it crash as often before the last patch?
If the crashing started recently, I would look to what has changed - including EVE settings that may have changed by default in a patch.

My GPU is the Intel X3100.
Eve has ALWAYS crashed on me (well since Apoc was deployed anyway)although the crashes were MUCH uglier when I only had 1 GB of Memory. Paging file filled and the crash took over a minute to work it's way through and release my machine.
I added more memory on Friday. Now the crashes are nice and neat and allow me to jump back into play almost immediately. But the crash is still there. :(

The Intel GMA chips seem to fair better than there older ATI counterparts.... but for some reason there's that nagging crash issue that most Nvidia users avoid seeing.
What are you running in the background? Are you doing more than one client? Are you running max settings or minimum graphics settings? ========================= CEO of Shadow Cadre http://www.shadowcadre.com ========================= Dependable, Honorable, Intelligent, No-nonsense Vote Herschel Yamamoto for CSM! |

AFAIK the intel GMA driver has a serious bug. Everyone seem to like the term "memory leak" for each and any problem they have. Especially when there's no evidence that the problem is really a memory leak. But this time it's true and TG have officially recognized it: the GMA driver does have a memory leak. And since it's in the driver there's nothing CCP/TG can do about it (plus EVE is not officially supported on the GMAs).
Not sure if it was fixed in the last update from Apple or not. I think not.
Please, spend 1 minute of your time and check this out

1)Nothing. I'm only running Eve
2) Nope. Only 1 client
3) Running at bare minimum settings...although I do still have certain effects on (Missile, turret, etc). Maybe gonna turn them off next and see if that changes anything.

Well, since I have the latest Apple software and I am still crashing, my guess would be...um...no.

there is NOTHING CCP/TG can do.. the only way to get this fixed is to contact Apple, but now that they moved away from the GMA chipset I don't think they will ever update the driver, apple has a tendency of not updating/dropping support for "failed" (the GMA was a stop gap/failed idea like the Cube) products.
Eve is a harsh place you won't always have everything go your way, its a do or die world and people do what they can to get along, so before you quit,
Can I have your stuff?« |

Edited by: Drake Draconis on 02/06/2009 23:36:35 This is why I was happy to see the last of the white macbooks with GMA chips go away...
Leaving the entire product line of macbooks ATI/GMA free.
The only thing I Can suggest is seeing if someone has hacked/modded any config files to get around the issue. ========================= CEO of Shadow Cadre http://www.shadowcadre.com ========================= Dependable, Honorable, Intelligent, No-nonsense Vote Herschel Yamamoto for CSM! |

I'm having the crash issue as well ...
has anyone tried bootcamp or parallels or something to run the windows client on the GMA? for as much as i hate the intel GMA, it's windows drivers seem much more robust than Apple's at the moment.

Hey there, I am having the same issue on my Macbook. The question I have is this, why is there nothing that CCP can do about the issue? It was my understanding that the new shader engine that was released with the first patch to Apocrypha was the source of the incompatability. I also understand the desire for CCP to consolidate their client in order to be working on the same graphical plane (Classic Vs. Premium clients to be phased out with Premium Lite)
On this issue however, why is it completely impossible for CCP to find some sort of workaround for this? I remember not too long ago speaking to LaVista Vista (former CSM) about this and him being very concerned and talking to CCP about the issue.
I really don't know all that much about this kind of thing, but I do know that Eve worked like a dream on my Macbook before Apocrypha, and now as soon as I undock, I watch my memory for Eve start to go up and up until the game crashes. I can sit in the stations all day long, and actually if I dock back up the memory seems to stop "leaking".
Sorry to filibuster here but I guess the main thrust of this post is that it can't be that hard for CCP to give some love to the Macbook users who got left in the dust. The real problem on this front is that we can't just grab a relatively inexpensive video card and pop it into the laptop. Please CCP, realease some kind of patch or a native client or something to get around this driver issue. You're smart guys, I know you'll think of something.

This is not a CCP/Transgaming issue it is an Intel/Apple issue, the GMA chip set is JUNK, and the drivers Intel gave Apple make the issue even worse.

See above it is not a CCP/Transgaming issue it is Apples. Also to whip a dead horse the MacBook was NEVER a supported platform for Eve..

Again see above.. CCP NEVER supported your laptop.. There is nothing they can do, you on the other hand can contact Apple support and ***** to them but good luck there..
