I'd like to know if the stars you see in each solar system in EVE really corresponds to all the real EVE suns as they are scattered through the galaxy? Does anyone know anything about this?
It would seem like this isn't the case as you have roughly as many stars in all directions in normal view, and the EVE galaxy is flat when looking at the map, so there really shouldn't be that many stars upwards and downwards.
If it's not "correct", wouldn't it be cool to have each star position really connected to a real EVE solar system?

you could see the rest of the EVE universe from any system at one time, was pretty cool. No idea what happened to it. ----

I believe the stars were removed because they caused a huge performance hit; or was that just the single extra star in each system?

all i know is it made space look nice and disappeared randomly one day and never came back. I didn't read all the patch notes at the time though so it might have been mentioned. ----------------------

Even in 3D-mode you see that the EVE galaxy is more or less flat (as are most real world galaxies)

Don't forget that the vast majority of solar systems are not represented on the map - they may never have had jump bridges to them, the jump bridges to them may be locked (by CONCORD or the Jove) or they may be off limits to capsuleers. ________________________________________________

That's sort of amazing. It doesn't compare to Infinity TQFE though. On the other hand, why are you reading my signature? |

did or do? i have to admit i have been wondering the same thing i know at one time they did there was even a system where the sky was almost white from all the stars (it was in RONA's recruitment video)

It was. I don't remember the exact reason they gave for it vanishing though. I think it just mentioned something about the mysterious star disappearing from the sky. Kind of lame in my opinion, as that star really did spice things up a bit.

Are we talking "new" as in 2005 or new as in 2009? I've only been playing a year and a half
You say "did correspond" so they don't any longer? is there any even newer star map that removed that again?
As far as I can see currently the stars in the background don't correspond to real EVE solar systems as there are equally many in all directions, especially upwards and downwards where one would expect very few stars otherwise. Possibly it could be like Doctor Penguin states that there are unconnected stars that we can see. But in that case, why bother mapping some of them into real EVE systems? Easier to just spawn them randomly.
Techincally some stars should be brighter as they are closer too, but now each one seem equally bright.

Yea, but then we wouldn't be able to visually identify moons without using the scanner.
As it is right now, you can see nearby moons as brighter white blobs than the background stars.

The visitable stars in eve aren't necessarily all stars in the eve galaxy. In fact it's probably not even close. But exactly how the eve galaxy looks, or what type of galaxy it is, or how our systems are located in it have never been revealed AFAIK.

Galaxy ?
Eve 'cluster' is barely 100 light years across .... Not much of a galaxy, more like a polite 'ahem' of stars .... :) .

I could swear that some year ago, after turning solar system map on, you were able to see real stars in EVE cluster relative to your position. I remember dots were unevenly distributed, with some parts of the background heavily populated and some other completely empty.

Yeah, I'll second that. I only trialed for 7days back in 2003, but this sounds extremely familar.

On the other hand they are introducing a new nebula system that will actually make you feel like your going from point a to b between systems. They may slap the stars back into it if they do.

The backgrounds of the Eve universe are getting kind of old. Would it be possible to use backgrounds based on actual hubble images and not have nebulas in every background? Also would it would be nice to see the galaxy in the background, depending on the location of the system you are in. For example, above the galactic plain, you would see part of the galaxy from that perspective, or below the galactic plain, edge on views, and so on. I know this is trivial to alot pf people, but detail and realism is important to me, and the change would be nice as well. Just a thought, thanks!

Yeah at the end they told it was only a graphical glitch or something. And I hoped they'll come up with some cool story hehe.

No. The skybox is just a pretty picture. The features you see, like the starts and nebula, doesn't relate to your position in the world in a realistic maner.
There was talk about making the background dynamic, based on your position in EVE, but a dev said it's not likely to happen (any time soon).

He said "did". It's definitely not the case anymore as could be observed a couple of days ago when we had the annoying jump-bug in eve. When it happened you were stuck in one place and the stars kept changing every few seconds or so while the client continuously reinitialized the solar system. Likewise, the star background during character creation also changes between screens (or at least used to change. not sure if it's still the case with the new npe char creation).
"Real" stars would be pretty cool. I can's see how it would impact performance as the star positions would only have to be calculated once when you jump into a new system. That should take any computer capable of running eve significantly less than a microsecond, so I seriously doubt it was removed for performance reasons.

To be honest I'd rather they fixed the many bugs and problems than add a dynamic background.

I'd say that's rather narrowminded. Sure, bugfixes are good (and needed), but games live from mysteries and little features that you discover as you play. The more the better. If you do nothing but bugfixes the game won't evolve and eventually people will lose interest. That's no problem for single player games or even most multiplayer games since the devs are already working on the next title or sequel. But I sure as hell hope that's not your idea how Eve should be developed.

and like in real world galaxies you can still see the stars in every direction.
The issue is the old star cluster should come back.
along with that, when will we get the epic space background system? the one where you can see where in eve you are based on the background the devs were talking about?
seriously, that dev said it MIGHT come out 2 months ago but they needed more time.
They better not sracp that for boring backgrounds with better ez like in w-space.
