Engine trails were cool. They gave us a sense of speed in a game that at the time seemed very large. In recent times there have been many tweaks and changes to the game that have removed that sense of speed.
Now ship trails have been removed altogether. There is no trail, just an engine blast.
I want ship trails back CCP, and I believe there is a large group of people here who will agree with me.

I agree, I don't care that they looked clunky and angular at high speed, I just want them back.

They removed them due to performance issues with them.
They've already stated they'll be back sometime. --- Grez: I shot the sheriff Kalazar: But I could not lock the Deputy BECAUSE OF FALCON |

hi cat here
CCP Torfifrans said that

"Acknowledged, we miss them too. We had to take out the old ones, as they were performance hogs, didn't jive with our new and improved rendering code and sometimes looked silly. We will certainly put in new ones, can't promise you when. It's on the list of things to do for the graphics programmers, but there's actually quite a lot of stuff on that list. If you are a graphics programmer and want this fixed, simply apply for a position at CCP, we are looking for graphics programmers amongst other things."
if you want them so bad looks like you have to apply for a job at ccp lol

Anyway I think they have bigger fish to fry. Personally, I'd rather they fry those up first.

Edited by: Navtiqes on 02/06/2009 12:31:07 Yeah, the space contrails were really sweet. They continuingly gave me goosebumps the first few weeks I played.
Later I noticed them going off in the wrong directions, not as badly as PlanetSide, but still enough to be annoying.
That's could be the reason they were pulled back, and if so then (fingers crossed) we'll hopefully see a new version of them in the not too distant future using the new particle special graphics.

at least the current engine effect is coming out of the engines and not a few inches behind it and doesnt slice thru the ships .... oh wait

I wish the brackets displayed velocity vector. Engine trails were poor substitute but they were something. I really do not want to zoom in every time I wonder where ships are heading.

I was looking at some of my really old pics from when I first played EVE some weeks ago, the engine trails then were....
I suppose that was back when coloured trails were all the rage (thanks to Homeworld probably), sad they are gone but oh well.

I guess they'll be back as a nice particle effect once the engine supports that.
The old ones looked really bad when the ship decelerated or made quick turns, but I guess you wouldn't notice that in your BS/MS :)

Performance hogs? I never noticed any performance problems with engine trails. And they can be turned off. Also, there is no way they could have impacted server performance in any way, because there is no need for any client-server communication to compute engine trails. Movement information for ships is already available and necessary to render the ships.
But surely, CCP expect everyone to shout "Yay!" when they say "we did it for performance".
Why can't they tell the ****ing truth just once? There will be no lynchmob before their doors in Reikjavik if they admit a little ****up when they upgraded to the new graphics engine. There were bigger ****ups than that in the last few patches, and some of them had actual impact on the game.

I'm not a softhead engineer but perhaps it's because it was a client side performance issue?

There is always "bigger fish to fry", it's a likely excuse. There's been many statements from CCP expressing surprise at the fact that their customers want something that they've never heard of before or considered to be of a negligible priority. Engine trails looks to be one of those things. There is just not enough whinage on the forums. ...

Stated with new graphics they became a perf hog.... not in the past. If it were simply a matter of client side perf then all they would need to do is add the option to turn off. However since that option is not around i'm guessing server side is affected as well. _________________________ "You know how I know you're a nerd?"
