Alright, I had forgotten how much drivel can be found in a NPC Corp's chat channel, used to it in Local, but apparently it is far more prevalent in the NPC Corp's chats.
This warning is to new players, doesn't apply to you? Ignore it.
Honestly though if you are a new player and reading the forums you are probably already in the 10% highest intelligence bracket of new EVE players and wouldn't have fell for the stupid scams that are clogging places like NPC Corp's corp chat and Market Centers (Jita, Rens, etc) local chat.
First off, in EVE, as in RL, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Second, If someone wants to give you free isk they will do so without having you jump through hoops to get it. Third, any contract oriented scam can be easily avoided by simply reading the contract in detail.
Here is a edited version of today's chat that left me scratching my head asking why so many people actually fall for this. I thought I'd go through the motions in order to be able to post this here and in Corp Chat.
NPC Corp's corp chat:
Lady Scammer > Giving away several billion ISK, read my bio for more info - completely safe as you don't have to give me one ISK!
"Her" Bio:
I'm leaving EVE due to rl issues. I have just sold my main char and I gave the bigger part of my asset to my ex corp. Now i'm giving few bils away to random ppl. Convo me, tell me how much you have and i'll make you a contract that double your money.
My private Convo with "Her":
Ivan Astronof > what type of contract will you be setting up? Lady Scammer > a freeform, is that okay? Ivan Astronof > no, private item exchange, to prove you are not a scammer Lady Scammer > negative
Amazingly "she" promptly left the convo at this point....
I realize this has all been said before, but apparently bares repeating every now and then.

Edited by: Tzar''rim on 03/06/2009 23:55:08 Being a new EVE player is like being a bomb technician trainee, only they let you train on a live one, the manual is vague to say the least and wrong 70% of the time. The bomb's been made by the most evil, obnoxious, humanity hating teacher you've ever seen and he HATES YOUR GUTS. It also has 29 traps, loopbacks and failsaves.
And everyone is standing 100m behind you cheering you on to cut the red wire.

How exactly does a freeform contract work and how do they trick people with it?

A free form contract is a 'text only' contract so people promise to give an item or make a contract with nothing but their word backing it.
Unless you know the party really well and there is no other way to do what you need to do never accept a free form contract.

Edited by: Agent Known on 04/06/2009 04:26:55 tl;dr version: Never accept freeform contracts. There's really no reason to use them at ALL. The other person can easily "fail" it on purpose and take your collateral and walk away, while you get nothing.

Don't trust anybody (until you get into a decent player corp) If it looks to good to be true...... It is. If it looks like a trap..... It is. Don't fly anything you can't afford to loose.

I have seen this exact player around a couple of times. Once when I was fairly a week or so old, then three to four weeks later, doing the exact same thing. I laughed. These con artists are so obvious, I laugh at them. Makes me wonder why people fall for it, though. I have not fallen for con artists yet, and do not intend to. Best advice is not to trust anyone in this game except corpmates (player corporations only) once you gotten to know them after a period of time.

one cool thing for the newbies. When you open up a player's information window, there is a notes page. You can write any notes there, and they will remain for your future pleasure. Chances are, 3 years from now, you'll have forgotten her name, but with the notes, you will have a clue.
It's also a good place to enter the names of buddies. So if you get treated badly and friends come along to help. You can record the names for posterity. Who knows, but notes do come in handy sometimes.
