As briefly as possible...
My main graphics card has gone to the big circuitboard junkyard in the sky, so I'm back to an older card which doesn't do DX10. So I try to launch Eve. It refuses to, even in Safe mode, so I check the start.ini and figure that the fact that it's set to Version=premium is the issue. Kinda thought Eve would detect the new card and revert to classic for me, but it didn't. Anyway, no problem, edit the start.ini and change it to classic.
Now, naturally, Eve doesn't run anymore, just comes up with "Verification failed on start.ini, please reinstall client.
Which is something I can't really do. Bandwidth in my location is so expensive it'll cost me three times the price of a monthly subscription for the 2.5GB needed to dl the client. Are my Eve-playing days over, in this case, or is there a workaround for this rather ridiculous issue?
Thanks for any advice.

I would say "over" since you mix up too many different things.
a.) Your older card doesn't do DX10, but what does it do? It needs to have SM2.0 at least (DX9.xx)
b.) There is no classic eve-client since about the 5 last patches or the beginnings of Apocrypha. There is however an integrated premium-light mode that uses SM2.0
c.) The start.ini? Where did you ever read to modify a "start.ini"? A file of importance sometimes is the prefs.ini or the whole settings folder. This is what you want to delete. (Assumed you have a working card under a.) )
d.) Bandwith? Well don't want to start discussing besides the question that you have not backuped your client files and patches in any way?

AS said, your card doesn't need to do DX10. In fact i do not think EVE supports DX10 yet.
It needs to be a Radeon 9xxx series and up. Or a Geforce 5xxx series and up.
That is it. Gives us the model of your graphics card.
Nothing fancy. My GPU doesnt even support DX10 since it is a Radeon x1300.
Change your start.ini file back to version=premium.
There is no classic client. i think that was made apparent a long time ago. |

It is likely trying to use older settings which your new card will not support. Clearing both your cache and your settings folders should resolve the issue for you without requiring you to download the installer again.
Note, you must revert start.ini to it's proper state first.
CACHE/Settings locations:
2000/XP C:\documents and settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\client_folder_location Vista C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE\client_folder_location Mac "/Users/username/Library/Preferences/Eve Online/Preferences/p_drive/Local Settings/Application Data/CCP/EVE/c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility"

Hi there ta for trying to help.
Graphics card is a Geforce 7600 GS.
Cleared the cache folder now, still no joy. After resetting start.ini back to premium, it's back to what it was doing yesterday. Eve splash screen loads, then goes away, as per normal, but never gets to the login screen. Eve application remains open and in the taskbar, Task Manager even reports that it is running, not "Not responding". But click on it and it opens nothing.
OS btw is Vista Ultimate 32-bit. Rest of the machine remains identical to how it was before the 8800GTX blew.

It sounds like it's still finding some bad settings, or your graphics driver is corrupted.
1. Try re-installing DirectX 2. Try re-installing your graphics drivers (even if they're up to date already)
If both of those steps fail, Have a search through your computer for "prefs.ini" and see if you find any in locations other than the default cache locations.. remove any extra copies of this file you find.. there needs to be only 1 for each EVE client. |
