When i joined eve more than 3 years ago, there was the same skill depth like today: the usual skills and some specialisation skills. Back then the highest SP of players was at 60m sp (there was a blog by Oveur showing the numbers). Today 100m are not uncommon, i have over 60m sp myself, but the depth of skill is still the same, i have to train skills that i don't need for quite a long time now.
The game has grown, please give us more skills to train for things that we use. A 2nd wave of specialisation skills maybe. Or remove the cap for some skills, so that people can train more than 5 levels, the natural time increase is harsh enough. Of course the new deeper skills should be in line with the rest and have a steep diminishing return. E.g. a cruise missile specialisation skill that grants only 1% rof and has a x12 rank or something, but it's still better than training skills that are never used at all.
TL;DR: Please give us more skills to train for the stuff we use.

Is there a chart showing all the skill dependancies and training time graphs?
They really need to rethink the training times.

Check the training times for a Hulk compared to a Covetor.

Not agreeing with this, but we do need more posts asking for this. To show the new players that they can catch up .

I think a major problem with having more sills to train or higher levels to train to would really hurt younger players (Of which I am not one, so I'm not a new player complaining about this idea). There needs to be some sort of cap, so that younger players are allowed to eventually catch up and become competetive with the older players. Otherwise, A 4 year old player will forever outclass a 2 year old player, and a 2 year old player will forever outclass someone who just joined. You just create this permanent gap between players. The oldest players will say "we've been around longer, we should always be better," but they might have a slightly biased opinion.
Though I do agree that older players might end up getting bored, as what I look forward to most is training for new ships & weapons

Yes this means for the new player even longer to catch up, but that additional skills should grant only a tiny advantage for a lot of SP. Take the example from above, 5% rof for training a rank 12 skill to 5 sounds like a fair deal, in exchange i lose the ability to use the FOTM ship, which i could train instead of that x12 skill, and have to stick to ships i fly, no matter how crappy they might become. It comes at a price. And that tiny advantage only becomes obvious in a direct 1v1 situation, in groups it doesn't matter that much, 2 medium skilled players using the same ship will out-damage a single maximum skilled player by far.
And even for the 1v1 comparisons the choice of ship and situation is more important than a little skill advantage.
A medium skilled torpedo Raven pilot will beat a maximum skilled cruise missile Raven pilot in a 1v1. A medium skilled Scorpion pilot will beat that maximum skilled torp Raven pilot in a 1v1. And a medium skilled cruise missile Raven pilot will then beat the maximum skilled Scropion pilot in a 1v1 etc.
After all it makes only sense to train for people who have been around for years, and longterm customers should get that little extra option, in other games they get loyalty items. A few additional hard to train skills in a skill-tree after years of same level of depth isn't asked too much. |

Or train for something else. If you've specced your char for a very specific thing ( say Amarr BS) maybe you can consider training something else ( invention ). No need to destroy the balance there is now. And don't tell me there are no more skills to train, cause noone has trained all skills in eve :)

There is a point to that, but I like the OP's idea. The diminishing returns will keep this from being too much of a problem. Eventually you're going to spend three months of training to get your hybrid damage up 1%, or whatever.
