Velin Shade: Thanks!
Maria Kalista: Thanks for spotting that, i'll fix that in the next release.
Ranar Brutorian: Usually that means the program couldn't download the Skill tree reference file from the EVE API site, it needs that file for the program to start. Does it work if you retry? It may have been a temporary error. This is the file it needs to download: http://api.eve-online.com/eve/SkillTree.xml.aspx

After downloading SkillTree.xml.aspx program let me enter API Key. Then tries to update my account info server, but stuks with no network activity.

I'll beef up the error handling, but it sounds like you have an unreliable connection to the eve api website.

New release is out, this one adds an automatic updater (using Sparkle) and will now take into account learning skills when it calculates the training time of a skill plan.
I'm going to try and make it calculate an optimal training plan by adding learning skills in if they will shorten the training time next.
Kilabie: Why do you need the app to upload to ineve.net? the website can fetch directly from the EVE API. I'm going to put this on the backburner for a while.

Edited by: Echo Degnar on 24/06/2009 17:13:45 I'm playing with the Skill Planner, and it doesn't seem to be picking up the %done for skills in training.
It knows the total time to train Electronics V, and the time remaining. It also knows the total skill points in Electronics at V and how many I have now... in the Character Sheet at least. The skill planner doesn't seem to take note of my current progress in the plan.
Great program. If development continues, it'll become one of my necessities. Always liked skill planners. If nobody else volunteers, I might try to dabble in icon design once I've finished some other projects.
Requests/Wish List:
Ship Fitting (as mentioned) Calendar Integration (as mentioned) Market/Contract/Asset Info (if available from API)
I'll work with it some more and see if there's anything that stands out as broken or unpolished, but everything looks good so far.
Edit: Oh! I'd love to be able to Right-Click on a skill in the Character Sheet and add it to a Skill Plan. (and noticed that the program doesn't seem friendly with only one mouse button at the moment). |

It should pick up the % completed for skills that have been partially trained and then stopped, but I know that it doesn't work for the skill that is currently in training. I'm working on this at the moment.
I think what I am going to do is put the currently training skill at the front of the queue and highlight it (and calculate the % progress). If the skill appears later on in the queue then hide it from display and calculate dates accordingly.
What do people want done with skills that have been completed? I'm leaning towards removing them from the plan, but they could also be highlighted or otherwise marked off as completed.

Ship fitting is a complex task, so it's a while away. Once I iron out these last few quirks in the skill planner I will add the possibility to generate a plan by from selecting a ship or module, and then a battleclinic browser. after that is done I can look at a ship fitting tool (as I need the ship and module info first)
I'm not sure what you mean by calendar integration.
Market info maybe after the ship fitter, that would be ages off yet.

This might be a bit tricky due to the way the program is designed, so I won't be doing that for now.
I'll see what I can do about making it work better with a single button, but I figured since it's impossible to play eve with a single button, that it wouldn't be too much of an issue.

I don't really have anything to add, other than generic support. This is probably the most advanced skill planner app for OSX at the moment, and at least on my end it seems perfectly stable. Nicely done, sir. |

I get a freeze when I press "Skill planner" in alpha9. The app not crashing, no excessive load on CPU. Interface is frozen forever, "Skill planner" stays grayed like i'm doing "click'n'Hold" thing.

I know ship fitting is a huge pain, and that there aren't any Mac apps that handle it right now. Take your time. I'm just happy to have a skill planning tool.
Being able to create a plan from ships/modules sounds great! Will we be limited to selecting a single item, or could we select several? Say, a ship and some modules. Even further, selected ships and modules could be arranged in the order we want them available to us... just a thought.
By calendar integration, I was thinking of iCal. I thought I had read something about that in the thread, but may have been mistaken. Whether it's working with iCal, or within the API App itself, some notice that a skill will soon/has finished training would be cool.
I understand ship fitting and trade information are a ways off. That's fine. Again, I'm just happy somebody is developing something. It's a great start, and it doesn't need many more features or tweaks before it's a solid skill planning tool.
Keep up the great work, and I'll see if I can't help out with something ù even if it's some graphics work ù when I'm a little less busy. If things get slow enough, I might even be inspired to dabble in programming again myself. --------------- *1) Do CCP, eve-online makers, should make more surver ?

Kate Marshall: I've never seen that before. what hardware are you running it on (32 or 64 bit)? do you have the latest 10.5.7 update installed? does it do it every time you run the program? does it do it for each character?
Echo Degnar: iCal integration is an interesting idea, I'll think about it after i've ironed out the quirks in the skill planner.
As for the ship and item planning, the idea is if you want to fly a Golem for example you just drag the golem onto the skill planner and it adds all the skills you need to fly it to the plan, same thing for ship modules. It won't be adding the Ship itself to the plan, just the skills required. You'd have to rearrange the individual skills yourself.

A new release is out, it's just a few final tweaks to the skill planner. I did some experimenting with displaying the currently training skill at the start of every plan, but it complicated things far too much (and didn't really work right) So the skill planner will be stay as is for the time being.
If the skill your character is currently training appears on the plan, it doesn't display the progress or a countdown, percent complete is only displayed if you pause the skill and the next API fetch reports the skill as partially trained. I may fix this in the future, but I think the current behavior is good enough for general usage and I want to move on to the ship planner.
I've been going through the CCP database dump in order to use ships and modules as options for a skill plan and I'll be adding that next. The DB dump is a little strange, so it may take me a while sort it out.

Just downloaded it.
It crashes every time I click SKILL PLANNER
so I cant use that feature
Few observations -Perhaps an improved dock icon -Improved contrast to better read the icons that represent skill level (I have a difficult time quickly reading what levels various skills are at) -create a column for length to next level, clicking for that information is bothersome

This happens for me as well. The Skill Planner worked fine for a few minutes after I first installed the app, but then it froze. I've tried several times, restarting the app, but no luck. Every time I hit the Skill Planner button it freezes up. The Mac Force Quit doesn't list it as Not Responding, though...
Also, I'm not too shabby at graphic design. So once you decide on a name for your app, send me an in-game message or contact me through www.diemshnb.deviantart.com (<-- preferred, tbh; + there are some logo designs in my gallery there if you want to check that out) and I'll whip you up a dock icon and/or logo for free. :) |

Next version will have a crash reporter, so hopefully that will help with tracking down these problems.

For those having crashes, can you please give this version a test? It's the latest development version and it has a crash reporter. If/when the program crashes a window should pop up with a report. just click the button to send the report to me.
It will ask you for your name and email address, if you don't want to supply that just leave it blank (but if i don't get an email address you clearly won't be getting a reply). |

Flammard,
Truly awesome application. You have just removed one of the two reason for me playing EVE on Bootcamp (EFT & Evemon). If you'd like I would love to offer my graphical assistance to your project (Icon, website etc. etc.).
Is it possible to make a sort of EFT for the Mac next to this excellent piece of .app? :)

Thanks for your offers, I think dock icons need to be 512*512 but I don't really know more than that. There's this tutorial ( http://tutorialdog.com/how-to-create-icons-for-mac-os-x/ ) If you guys have any good ideas I'd like to see them. I really haven't had any better ideas for a name for the app. MacEveApi is just what I've named it for lack of anything better.
Bernadictus:
Ship fitting tool is a while off yet, I should have skill planning by Ships and Modules released in the next few days though.
I've noticed a few people have downloaded the test version I posted the other day, yet I've had no replies about the skill plan crash. If it's fixed the problem or it still crashes then please let me know

When adding skills, the program still freezes. It does not crash, but it simply does not allow you to do anything else. Also It's not straight forward how to add skill over multiple levels.

Right click -> select the level you wish to train to.
Does the CPU usage spike when the program gets stuck? I have no idea what is causing this, I can't replicate the behavior, in the debugger or with a normal release build.
So you can get to the skill planner? it's not like others have reported where it crashes or halts when you click on the planner icon?

No crashes with this one here.
It looks awesome and works pretty well. For some reason I was dragging the skills to the skillplanner but that doesn't work, I suppose thats intended behaviour.
Few things I'd like to see:
-Is it me or am I missing the skillqueue? I think the skillplanner is more important at this moment, but it would be nice to see what's next in line on the skillqueue. -A seperate field for the level you train a skill to. I'm working on a small screen and have to make the skillname column smaller than the name of the skills so can't see the level I train them too. -Completed skills from the skillplanner could in my opinion be grayed out, (maybe with an option to hide them?). -Completed skills should not show with more than 100% completed as they do now if you trained a skill to a higher level later on.

Good to know. I've tested this app on a PowerPC G5, first gen intel mac mini, and my macbook (jan 2009 model) and I can't find this crash / freeze. If anyone who gets this problem wants to help me solve it, send an email to [email protected] and I'll get back to you. I'll give you a few test versions and get you to send me back the log files. hopefully the problem can be narrowed down. If no one sends me an email I'm going to ignore the problem for now.

No, that's a bug. I'll fix it in the next release

The Skillqueue is quite half arsed at the moment, It's not really that high on my list of things to do.

Yep, I can look at doing that for the release after next, I think I'll add preference pane so you can configure what columns are displayed

I guess I should send you my cache/settings files, so you will be able to replicate the problem. Can you list the files you need? (not sure I found them all)

User data is stored in under your home directory as "Library/Application Support/MacEveApi"
if you can zip that directory up and email to [email protected] I will look at as soon as I can. Note that this will also give me your character details and API keys so if you are not comfortable with that then don't send it.

Awesome app!
I've noticed that there are about 3 different skill planners now for OS X (this app, Ceres and EVE Mac suite). I think it would be cool if you worked together on an open source app - it'd probably speed things up. I'm not very familiar with development, so maybe this is a bad idea in practice. Traps are like mopeds, fun to ride until your friends see. |

I've got a preview of the next version available for use if anyone cares to try it. This version has ships and modules in the skill planner. Drag a ship onto a plan and it will add every prerequisite for that ship to the plan. The interface for this is needs tweaking and the ships and modules are not grouped together all that well, but it does provide a functional ship / module planner. Linkage
For the ship & module planning to work you need the database, which can be downloaded by clicking MacEveApi -> Check for new database in the menu bar
