I must say I'm extremely interested so far, but the learning curve is quite steep and there doesn't seem to be much direction for a new player. It was difficult to know what I was supposed to be doing when I first logged on.

Hi Xaven, Like Solo said, the best teacher you can get is an ingame player. There are tons of willing "fountens of knowledge" in there (including me...at least on the willing part). Don't read a manual. Finde someone, grab a hold with hands and feet, and ask every question that enters your mind :)

The learning curve to this game isn't so bad I don't think. It is important to pay attention to the tutorial though, and also to run the tutorial missions afterward. They are at least as helpful as the actual tutorial.
The fact that there is little direction for a new player is a more understandable complaint. Again, the tutorial missions can help alot with that though. But if you aren't into doing missions for npc's your motivations, goals, and direction in eve all have to come from yourself. It's a weakness, but also a great strength of the game. People who are following their own hopes and dreams are much less likely to become bored than someone who is just jumping through computer generated hoops.
