generally speaking, I consider simply being inconsiderate... to be rude.
when it comes to forums however, it might be a bit different. not reading the post they're replying to, can be pretty rude, not to mention stupid. or just posting to point out spelling errors in a post, and/or using said spelling errors as a way to invalidate the claims made in said post.
*shrugs* just being sarcasting, isn't enough.. just mocking someone, isn't really enough either (well, I suppose it depends on the type of mocking).

I find that rude people are those that state opinions as FACTS non sequitur.
We all here emit our own opinions and digress and rabble rabble and scream and shout and post what we believe is the best, but those that portray their own ideas as THE CANON without any shadow of a doubt are worse than those that being blasphemous heathens (in any field, not religion) portray their misguided pseudo beliefs as if they had papal infallibility handed to them by raptor jesus and the holy sausage bun themselves.
Those are the rude ones, the rest is just regulars.
Only thing I can't stand is someone saying that what they do is the best, simply "cuz".
If you gonna emit an opinion, be sure to back it up by REAL FACTS, not permutations that are projected from the deepest pits of your idle addled brain and somehow stabilized into your experience and assuming that if it happens to you it happens to everybody else.
That kind of egalitarian self centric view of the world is for me more blasphemous than the fools that post that eve Needs to be more like WoW, and thats saying something.
Yep, thats being rude IMHO.
The sheer stupidity of marginalizing a whole reality of experience with your own inner limitations clouded by your own past and personal experiences and pretending to apply them to the whole then acting on the assumption that in your mental solipsism you are the center of the universe and what trash you spew, feel or think is ALL.
That's like me, or anyone else saying the sky is Pink Fuchsia with Shades of Red and tastes like tomatoes and you better say yes or else I'll pop a cap on you.
<shiver in nerd rage>
Unfortunately I find that about 80% of people think and behave like this, from the lowliest serf to the highest religious bigot/hardcore agnostic scientific.

Edited by: Whitehound on 19/06/2009 10:25:36 Many people are over-sensitive or maybe only you are insensitive.
It really depends on where you want to stand. Do you want to be the misfit, the outsider? Then screw everyone else's judgement. Or do you accept other people's judgement, adjust and become less insensitive? The choice is yours, and there is little to argue about. -- If there is anything in your life you fear of losing, then keep your mouth shut once in a while. |

Edited by: Ratchman on 19/06/2009 10:43:47 If you say a perfectly innocent sentence to enough people, you will eventually find someone who takes offence to it.
This is the way people are. I once seriously offended someone by suggesting that Turkey for Christmas was little old-fashioned. They took it as a slight against their family traditions, and a personal insult.
Was that a matter of the other person being overly sensitive, or was I just insensitive? It just depends on your point of view.
What annoys me in the forums who people who deliberately try to offend. They only do this because they know there are no reprecussions as long as they steer clear of certain words. Something tells me these people wouldn't be so bold in real life. There are a number of people in-game that I would love to invite into a fleet, just so we could get them on voice, and see if they smack as much then.
I've always operated on the basis that I treat people in-game as I would if I were face-to-face with them. Just because socialisation is remote, it doesn't mean you abandon all sense of tact and diplomacy. You may eventually meet them. I once had someone come up to me in a bar thousands of miles away and introduced herself. It was someone I regularly talked to at work, but only ever on a phone. She recognised me by voice alone and across several continents. Coincidental, but these things do happen.
Argue a point, fine, but use reason and good manners, and there won't be any problems. Shout, and you have already lost the argument. |

Yes.
And actually, we don't say "thankyou" to every little thing, but we do say "sorry" to every little thing. Even if it is "Sorry, you appear to be standing on my foot" or "Sorry, you appear to have shoved in front of me in the queue" (queue hopping is considered really rude here btw, much worse than just saying your mum is so ugly that that dog just died)

Both the buyer and vendor will say 'thankyou' anything up to 3 or 4 times in a simple transaction though. My favourite quirk of the English is that we like queuing so much, we will form a 'queue' of one if we are alone in a lot of situations. Think about it, I bet you do it.

I don't believe in rudeness over the internets. It's generally never personal and if it is, well the guy's an idiot because you can't know anything about a person from reading forum posts.
IRL it usually doesn't bother me either. I'm a pretty easy going guy, it takes a lot to get me riled up. I get more angry over idiot politicians than I do over rudeness |

But really, I agree with Ratchman to a certain extent, but I think it really comes down to culture, context and personalities. I am presently having trouble with my 23 year-old cousin who lives with me and just doesn't seem to understand how dis-respectful he is sometimes.
Yesterday my 2 year old son, let me repeat, my 2 year old son, threw a spoon at my 23 year-old cousin and it hit him in the face, not very hard granted. I put my son on a cool down, time out of sorts, and then when his 2 minutes was done I asked him to go apologize to his "uncle". My cousin ignored my 2 year old's first two attempts and then finally told him "I don't accpet your apology". What an ass!
Now I find it extremely rude that my cousin, who lives with my family and I, has trouble accepting an apology from a two-year old. He said that he didn't have to accept the apology and he was still mad that the spoon had hit him in the face. I say he is immature, rude, and simply dis-respectful. I'm trying to teach my son manners and how to be respectful, but most of the time I feel like I'm having to teach my cousin about being respectful as well. Really though it's starting to get ridiculous.
For me simply be as respectful to others as possible and know when it is the right time and place for jokes and sarcasm. Sometimes though people are going to be insulted and there may be nothing you can really do about it.
Throw the cousin out.
Myself I get told I'm rude all the time, in part due to me not taking note of the proper etiquette, don't care one bit for tradition and question just about any moral high ground there is, of course I get myself into trouble. Will I change, will I appologize, not bloody likely?!
Someone once said 'if you hate something, don't you do it too!' it's a spin off the golden rule and it's what I live by. Rude till I die.
Should/would/could have, HAVE you chav!
