Lancaster, Pa., keeps a close eye on itself
The camera coverage me be comparable or even better than in the UK. But, in the UK, are volunteers watching the camera? Here they are. Want to case out a street, spy on someone you dislike? Just become a volunteer!
I live near Lancaster. I can see the tallest buildings from my home. The city is truly pathetic. I graduated high school with Scott Martin, the county commissioner who wants to expand this. And, he is supposed to be a Republican. Well, I guess he doesn't want the government involved, but a volunteer organization that answers to no one is just fine!
The mayor is also a goofball. His old law firm made its money in part by defending puppy mills. The place is a mess.
Quote: Mary Catherine Roper, staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania, says the coalition's role as a self-appointed, self-policed gatekeeper for blanket surveillance of an entire city is unique.
"This is the first time, the only time, I've heard of it anywhere," she said. "It is such a phenomenally bad idea that it is stunning to me."
She said the coalition structure provides no public oversight or accountability, and may be exempt from state laws governing release of public records.
"When I hear people off the street can come in and apply to watch the camera on my street, now I'm terrified," she added. "That could be my nosy neighbor, or my stalker ex-boyfriend, or a burglar stalking my home.
EDIT - The volunteers didn't catch me breaking into my car when I locked keys in it last week while in town.

CCTV is a great tool against crime, not only can it prevent crimes from taking place but also assist in crimes being solved, but it needs to be governed by strict rules and policed completley or else it can be abused. I live in a small town in England where we have cameras located around the main streets, park and other key areas, it has been a valuable tool for the authorities and it makes people feel somewhat safer knowing they are there. On occasion something has happened and the camera wasnt being watched at the time or it was facing the wrong way but overall they are a good thing.
Hopefully your town will be forced into having the cameras operated by a proper group and not just any tom, **** or harry who "wants" to. Over here the people who operate our cameras are trained staff who have the SIA CCTV operators licence and also due to the licence they have had a police background check done to ensure they ain't been in trouble with the law before. Data protection act ensures that proper handling of the tapes are carried out. It's not perfect I admit, but it is a very good thing here.

I like camera's. They capture things like your murder or the beating of a store clerk so I can watch it on tv later on for my amusement. Now if they came attached to a gun I would feel safer perhaps but until then I'll stick to my own devices.

You don't really get the point of a deterrent and evidence do you
