Edited by: Yon Krum on 24/06/2009 06:14:43 So, there have been a rash of recent "what X would you do to EVE" threads here in General, with one or another Dev jumping in, blue-barring them, and declaring "we're paying attention!" I might as well join them.
Useability and user-interfaces are a esoteric area of program design, melding sociology, programming, and informatics into a weird soup that is rather alot more mystical than the normal programming witchery. In short, it's generally regarded as "hard". Experts get paid alot, because without a good UI your brilliant work won't be used, or used with much teeth-grinding.
Enter EVE: an enormous database and spreadsheet application with several hundred thousand users. We're all familiar with the UI. Now, what would YOU do to improve it?
I have two items, as examples:
1) The "People and Places" interface... should be revised to place the top "folders" section along the side for each category, with scroll-bars for both panes. This is the standard, Windows way of presenting folders and data-items within them. EVE's current setup eventually results in either too many folders, or too many items, both of which prevent dragging things like bookmarks into a folder. Very frustrating!
2) The "Transaction" pane of the wallet should highlight transactions (buys or sells) that close one of your active orders. Green is a good colour for this. This would provide a visual clue for which order vanished, as otherwise only meticulous out-of-game bookkeeping and a good memory permit tracking which order has sold-out.

Being able to move all sub windows/panels off of the main EVE client view port - just like when working in photoshop with 2 monitors, you sort of tend to move all your tool palettes to the 2nd screen and use the first screen to hold only the main window displaying the picture you re working on.

drag drones in space to one of the turret hotkeys(lots more room now with grouping) meaning i could for example hit F1 to fire turrets and then F2 to send the drones.
also a Drone Defend Attack Priority system by ship size. ie tell the drones to chase after currently attacking drones/frigates first, then cruiser and then BS.

Two things:
1)The ability to stop the chat window grabbing all my keyboard input every time I press something on my keyboard.
2)And leading on from number (1), Keybinds.
I'm fed up of having to do things with multiple clicks of a mouse when I could easily make 1 click and then press a button on the keyboard using my other hand to complete the action.
Keybinds for targeting/untargeting things, the ability to remap all of the F-keys to something else, keys for opening every single type of window imaginable, keys for Approach, Orbit, Kepp at Range, etc.

1) Give each window it's own unique ID, so that we can resize windows and NOT have it resize other windows. i.e. Open a can out in space and move/resize that window, now dock and open ship/items window and it's been changed by changing a completely different window! (I know they share the same window ID, but would it really be that hard to add additional window ID's?)
2) Moar hotkeys! I have my drones set up, but I'd like a way to drop a target without right clicking, align to, approach, etc. Much more fluid and efficient to be able to do things the way a player wants and not force them to use right click menu's.

The lack of keyboard shortcuts in EVE is frustrating. I can only assume that no one at CCP ever played any games prior to creating the 2nd most popular MMORPG in the world, as even a rudimentary understanding of gaming suggests that prohibiting nearly every action from being bound to a key is a recipe for disaster.
Add an option for the overly social players to keep the current mechanic of nearly every keystroke being absorbed by the chat box. The default should follow the general consensus of video games - hit enter, type ****, and finally hit enter to submit.
At the very least, actions such as align to, approach, orbit and keep distance should be bindable. While I appreciate being able to order drones to attack or recall them via keyboard shortcuts, I'd like to extend that functionality to launching them as well.
These changes are not hard to implement, and they would do wonders for the game. |

I'd love to be able to play eve without using the mouse too much. Hotkeys would be my first thing to add on usability issues.
Second - the font. It's terrible, hard to read and my eyes are not so good anymore, I'd like to be able increase the font size. I suspect people with good ayes would be happy with ability to downsize the font too, to have more space on screen for pretty explosions. |

To be able to group weapons in the fitting screen by selecting a range and then hitting "group" from a context-sensitive menu rather than shift-dragging everything. And have your fitting browser remember what links and ammo you keep in the guns and your hold.

The scanning interface would be a good start.
Fix the programming so it actually works. Remove that stupid pattern from the probe bubbles. Remove the 'shadow' projected onto the system plane by the probes.

Busy = change of some kind (line of speech or a new object on the overview) or moused over. |

Edited by: Navtiqes on 24/06/2009 12:04:24 I'd seperate the local tab from the players-in-local list. That way I wouldn't have to keep that damned chatwindow open and blocking my view.
Local players should be on the overview instead. It makes sense and I need to have the overview open anyway so it'd make less clutter too. Would need to be a seperate scroll tab though, and text string only. None of those lame portraits. |

And do you know what I find fustrating about this? Is that even though it's supposed to be absorbed by chatbox, a lot of times I'm having to click into the chatbox to type out a message. Especially when doing multiple things in windows, or maximizing the game from being alt-tabbed. ---- My Music |

In addition to all the other great ideas so far posted and all the great ideas that will get posted after this one I suggest to:-
Instead of blue standings icon in local, replace it with a little (blue?) "0.8" or whatever.
Replace the target lock icon of a ship with a close up of the actual target as it is in space and what it is doing, direction etc. relative to the current camera orientation (probably)

Stupid Forums swallowed my post... I spent time detailing that bloody thing... uuuurgh
Anyway short version.
Drones placed in a manner like modules. A tab button in the ships radial UI that allows you to quickly flip between the two sets of buttons. Treat drones as modules with a health bar.
Icons n stuff Icons and general housekeeping is stupidly clunky. Icons are massive and if you didnt know what it was from the big icon you get a helpfful sometimes incomplete string of text beneath it.
Text should be on mouse over and icons should be smaller.
Players assets should be treated as the market is. Dropping anything into your items window should automatically place it within the correct category.
Fittings should updated its a nightmare having multiple ships. If you attempt to place any modules inside of cans the ship fitter wont find them... it wont strip a ship either for some unknown reason.
All modules should be found easily within the pilots asset market thing - see above. No more need to faff about with cans.
and a million other things that this damn forum swallowed.

There's hundreds, I wouldn't know where to start.
There's some really annoying ones, a lot more then I can remember here but unfortunately I gotta go with what I can remember.
- Custom folders for people and places to drag and drop bookmarks into like in notepad, so it doesn't take 30 minutes to find the system you have a bookmark in because you have blown out lists of 500 all in the same system just before alphabeticly.
- Add a watchlist tab to people and places, where people added to addressbook automaticly go, but where you can then move some of them to buddies if needed, not the mess I have in buddies list now where half of them are blue to me and half aren't, all randomly dotted along in a list.
- The ability to unfit a ship you do not have the ability to pilot without having to repackage it when it is rigged. Actually I'll go further then that, a complete end to the nonsense of having to be sitting inside the current damn ship to look at its fittings (to be inside it to change it's fittings would be tolerable), to insure it, to change it's name, not sure if you can repair a ship you arent flying either from memory. All that needs to change.
- A way to clear waypoints from the autopilot without having to load up the damn map and hope your ship stays safe for a minute or so.
- A way to search for things that are inside the hold of a ship or in a cargo container.
- Ability to drag a selection box over items and a double click to select all of the same type, rather than having to ctrl + click a certain selection of 200 items. |

I would like a lot more control over the colours used on the UI.
I'm colour blind and so more or less anything thats red in the UI becomes very hard to see when against a dark background... like space. |

In general - less nested menus, and more buttons.
More user-customizable presets that are easily accessed - for example several user-defined keep-at-range and orbit distances with drop down menu arrows next to the corresponding action buttons.
A drop down menu arrow next to the warp-to action button listing the warp-to distances.
A redesign of the status/module cluster and it's better integration with targeted objects and the overview - minimize mouse travel and allow arrow-key navigation. It also needs to look like it actually fits with the rest of the interface.

As an interface designer I have about a thousand wishes for the EVE UI, but here are my favorites:
1. Key bindings. (Has been mentioned before). These need to be done in much greater detail. Look at Freespace 2 for a good example.
2. Put bookmarks, mission locations, events, etc in the overview.
3. Allow players to merge any amount of chat screens and show the different threads in different colors/format.
4. Only start typing in a chat screen after using an ENTER key, not any time you hit any type of key.
5. Allow the maps that are under the F11 key to be shown in a window (like the overview, chats, etc). And while you are at it... redesign them. They are in need of a good look by the UI team.
6. This last one is a bit of a dream, but I would love 2 extra "views" for the complete EVE client. A fleet fight view, where all visual elements are condensed and grouped. And a minimal client view. As few graphics as possible and as much elements as possible that are represented by stats and numbers. (Ok item 6 is a bit wacky and I never expect these to happen, but I have some awesome ideas in that area). |

EVE = Attack of the billion item, non-prioritized menus.
Nested menus where critical choices are listed casually among a thousand other things is probably one of the worst design choices in EVE.
Consequently, things like the drone GUI etc are horrible. When I want one drone to quickly withdraw I get a right-click menu where I quickly have to find the command among 87 other choices. Yes, it's in there somewhere but in the heat of the moment those extra seconds might lose me another drone/ship/brain. Scratch that last one.
Menu/GUI-lag in a *menu-driven* game is not exactly helping the situation. I'm constantly over shooting when quickly going for a certain command. The margins are too small.
So:
1) Perhaps if we could have simple macro-able buttons we could bind commands to. IIRC something similar is/was available in Anarchy online.
2a) At least bump the vital commands higher up in the menu list/hierarchy. Whatever those vital commands are might differ depending on player so:
2b) Why not let us re-arrange the order of (some of) the commands in the menus.
3) Color coding in the menus. Also, see 2b; let us choose the color of (some of) the commands. Right now it's like coding in a text editor without color coding; wall of stuff.

Here's another annoying one that got me today.
I ACTUALLY heard a song I liked on the jukebox (don't ask me why I had it on) so I rush over and click on the jukebox to see which track it was so I could remember.
Soon as I click on the jukebox, track automaticly stops playing, and I'm staring at 50 tunes, none selected.
How bloody useful CCP, thanks for that.
