Edited by: Nova Satar on 24/06/2009 09:49:56 I don't know whether anybody made this thread already , but i watched that program which was all about MMO's and how they are generally getting bigger and bigger and taking over the world lol.
There was a decent size chunk about EVE but sadly it was all about the CSM which i feel is the worst thing in EVE... but anyway
It really makes you realise, how lucky EVE players are... it cycled through some various MMOs and they all looks so ****, for starters the graphics are just in a different league! Most are nice cutscenes followed by what can only be described as Nintendo 64 graphics. The EVE trailers are stunning in comparrison, but the best thing is, thats basically the INGAME graphics.
I only wish they touched on the more the whole structure and economy of EVE, but it mainly just talked about Second Life for that, (which by the way, looks ******ed)
Oh, also... what the hell is up with Chinnese and Korean people, they are nuts.
Korea apparantly have an official CYBER TERROR RESPONSE UNIT (no jokes, that is the actual name, they are like a police division), where basically if you pulled off a scam in-game, these people would find you, and effectively take you to court. It's mental.
Anyway, anybody else watch it?
I had sexytimes watching Hilmars NAKED and very wet interview.

Oh dear sweet JESUS what the **** IS IT WITH THE MEDIA AND SECOND ****ING LIFE?
For some reason TV and Cinema is always stuck about 10 years behind when it comes to accurate depictions of gaming. Even in the late nineties, whenever a surly teenager was playing computer games it was invariably a pacman or space invaders era BLEEP BLOOP job.
They will still be talking about how futuristic and groundbreaking Second life is when we can all fly Buicks to the moon. |

Yeah there was this guy on there that makes his living from Second Life, like a virtual store. He truly thought that he was god, he thought he was the coolest cat on the block. It was HILARIOUS lol, in reality....? Sad ****er.

I would have watched it today but for some reason certain types of FLV just lock my browsers up on this PC. I think its McAfee...(****ty work PC)
Korea is a gaming mecca, they take games very seriously - hence why they have such units. People have been killed over purples in that country.
As for Second Life, it is awful - I tried playing it once, I dithered around a bit and some dude abused me for being on his private island - then I got mobbed by Furries.
It was an incredibly traumatic experience and I do not plan on playing it again. Second Life is a horrible example of what people will do if unhindered by society, morals or money.
Oh, and the graphics and animation are absolutely abysmal, everyone walks around like they've just had a concrete enema.
I can guarantee however, that when/if WiS is released, it will see vast media coverage. That is when EVE will change forever. |

Oh I don't know… In Grosse Pointe Blank (1997), they showed some Doom II (1994) gamplay — that's only three years behind. Granted, they mixed together scenes from very very different maps, and completely out of order, but you can't have it all I suppose. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

morale of the story is, quit your whining guy coz we got it pretty good
I was watching a clip of WoW on the program, and it was basically two character, run at each other and do the equivilent of "bash a". You see the same sword swipe over and over again while the health bar drops....
i was like..

Yeah and Doom II was never available in a cabinet format. Its like they go out of their way to get it wrong. |

To be frank, PvP gameplay in World of Warcraft is more advanced than the EVE equivalent. Don't get me wrong, I love EVE and I quit WOW long ago, but competetive PvP in WOW is waaaaaaaay ahead of EVE (... in fact, competetive PvP doesn't even exist in EVE). |

these other MMO's just give a distinct impression that it doesnt require a brain.
However they did a bit about Lineage II in Korea... where apporatnyl you need castles and **** to have power, but all the Peasents revolted agaisnt some big empire and had a massive fight, which sounded cool impremise, but when they showed clips and stuff, it was jsut, run at people and bash the button.
Atleast EVE requries some serious tactics and ultimtely skill to do something big.

Yes we do, but your arguments are pretty specious.

Because Eve's 1v1 combat visual experience is so varied.

As I'm not familiar with WoW PvP, could you expand on that a bit? What do you mean by "competitive PvP" - the term seems like a tautology. |

Your experience with PvP in World of Warcraft seems limited. Even with tenfolds of 3rd party interface addons to present miscellaneous information, my point still stands.
Quote: Tell that to the FCs and corp CEOs in 0.0 wars.
Pardon - I was referring to gameplay, not consequences. Needless to say, EVE is unparalleled in the department of consequences and goals.
Originally by: Malcanis As I'm not familiar with WoW PvP, could you expand on that a bit? What do you mean by "competitive PvP" - the term seems like a tautology.
Sure! As far as I'm concerned there's two kinds of PvP; casuals who do it for fun and don't really care how they fare, and nerds who spend hours upon hours refining their "skill". The latter is often dubbed "competetive PvP", and refers to competing with the best.
I'd be inclined to agree that on the casual level, gameplay is much the same and neither game is more advanced than the other. On the top, though, World of Warcraft is in a league of its own. It's a perfect blend of strategy, teamwork and reaction time that EVE tends to lack. EVE Arena |

I really hate to change the subject, but after playing for 4 years, from lvl60 BGs, lvl70 BGs and Arena, lvl80 BGs and Arena and everything in between, it's all about min/maxxing and fotm classes / specs / setups.
Their Frost nova is our webifier, so to speak.

Actually I thought that was pretty cool, just take away what he was doing, which was kinda sad, and looked at the amount of RL money he'd made - he'd basically been able to give up his job and live a comfortable life just by creating graphics for a computer game that someone else created and hosted - that has to be pretty cool - first thing that stuck me was god I wish we could create our own stuff in EVE (like ships, not avatar movements, lol) - and make either ISK or money from that. Second life does nothing for me but a lot of people do obviously love it.
Only got about half way through it as it's on the PVR but looking forward to seeing EVE - though sounds like it was about the CSM which is kinda sad rather than the guiding hand social club or BoB or the Goons or somesuch which are the more interesting social aspect of the game fir me.
Is EVE a civilisation was also a question I started asking myself as I watched

My gaming experiences:
EQ: grind grind grind... quit
Anarchy Online: No... to painful to relive.
Horizons: "Hello? Is there anybody in here?" *tumbleweed slowly drifts by*
City of Heroes: Wow! I'm a super champion and I made it to the max level and beat all my super foes! What do I do now? *quits*
WoW Free Trial: see EQ
Second Life: While still trying to figure out the controls a fat chick kept calling me hot and begging for cyber sex. This lasted an hour. *quit*
EVE ONLINE!!: Like walking into a pitch black room and getting kicked hard in the balls by somebody who feels neither guilt nor joy at having done so. |

i enjoyed AO, sure it was a bit grindy and the pvp was shocking and there was no high level content at all until they introduced a dragon (inspired choice there), but it was a real sense of community.
also the guards could be killed really easily and dropped great loot. but everyone was running around with freedom arms pistols because they were the only weapons worth having for pretty much every class except enforcers.
i think the entire documentary was just about how virtual worlds live or die on their communities, and how the communities evolve and shape themselves based on the environment as it grows. eve for example is almost exactly like walking into a dark room and being kicked in the nuts by someone who then procedes to giggle about it. thats a good analogy :) |
