There are corps that advertise that they are NOT a part of an alliance, so that must mean that there are significant disadvantages to a corp joining and belonging to an alliance. What are these disadvantages? Thank you.

You beat me to it... more specifically I would mention war and politics, and politics depending on where you are. If one corp in an alliance gets war dec'd the entire alliance is at war, both a pro and con obviously.

You join a corp based on the type of corp it is and the type of people it has (hopefully), if that corp is in an alliance you get a few hundred (or more) people whom you don't know and you didn't choose for free!.
difference in doing things difference in type of corp difference in 'feel' every group has idiots, a bigger group has more idiots replace the above idiots with drama

There is no substantive difference between being a member of an alliance versus merely being a member of a player corporation. Anything that can happen in an alliance (idiot members, idiot directors, thefts, war decs, internal/external politics) can happen to an individual corporation.

War declarations are more expensive when you're in an alliance. It costs 2 million for a corp to declare war on another corp, 50 million if either one or both sides are an alliance.
This is an advantage of being in an alliance, if you don't like war. It's a major disadvantage if you do like war, or at least want the freedom to declare war when you like.
On a related note, being in an alliance definitely limits your freedom. Your CEO basically loses his autonomy to make decisions, and you have to listen to the alliance leaders' decisions about where to live, who to fight, etc.
