Hi all,
Some of you may remember me, most won't. Anyways, how's life for the humble pirate nowadays? I quit just before the sensor damp range/targeting time split, before T2 bs's etc and I have to say, it wasn't looking good for piracy around then. Just resubbed for a few days and am trying to decide whether to come back. Am I too old in the tooth? Have I missed too much? More importantly; how's scan probing changed? I was a huge fan of the pre-exploration 3 probe system and I've heard things have gone a bit more old school style.
To anyone who does remember me though, I love you xx. Especially shigsy...

Piracy?
It kinda died when they brought NPC faction police to Lowsec and made it so you cant activate guns on non-wartargets in Highsec.

Wow. WoW in space actually happened...
I'm speechless. So is anyone from the old crew still about? I figure Verone must be because I'm not actually sure he is a real person. He's got to be an NPC. He'll be still here when the world ends and the servers flicker and die.
Or maybe not...
So has anything changed for the better?

Of course I'm still here.
A lot of very significant and notable pirates have left the game sadly, but it's had the good effect of taking a lot of smacktalking 'tards with them.
As for piracy, for a PIRATE, rather than just a gatecamper who runs at the sight of anything remotely threatening, piracy is very much still alive as always.
There's a lot of big FW fleets about, but if you don't have the number to face off against them they're easily avoidable. Typically the FW fleets are a lot less organised than the average corporate gang, which can be used to good effect against them, still the power of sheer numbers is never to be underestimated.
For the roaming pirate, rather than the spawn camping gate and station hugger there's a lot of new opportunities.
Welcome back to the fray mate, it's good to see a veteran back... there's not many left, most have moved on to be alliance sheep.

Hey Verone
So old school style roaming piracy's back on top and camping's died a death? I like the sound of that. Small gang piracy was definitely the most fun imo. If that's true and probing's still fun I might rejoin the fold for a bit.
I imagine I've got a lot to catch up on though. I mean I've never set foot (pod?) in any of the new ships, let alone studied their strengths/weaknesses so I'm no better than a noob at the moment.
I think I'll have a run about in someting cheap and see what trouble I end up in.

Okay, i cant do this anymore.
Piracy is alive and kicking the pants off of people in all the old way, along with a few new and sadistic ones.
I was pulling your leg about no gun activation in highsec and Faction NPC police in Lowsec. Sorry, i'm a bastard.
The entire scanning system has changed. Its heavily bugged, you can make cruisers and small unprobable without using a cloak by using ECCM, its quicker to scan someone down IF you know where they are but people can bounce from safespots and be invulnerable thanks to the way probes function now.
ECM jammers were changed recently, the Falcon got a slight nerf.
Assault frigates are now awesome.
Stealthbombers now fire torps and use covops cloaks and bombs ot fixed to make them much cheaper. They are fantastic ships now.
Webs got HEAVILY nerfed. So did missiles in general.
Read up on the Nano nerf.
Suicide ganking got nerf'd hard.
Nagalfar now worth flying.
Large artillery still ****
Tiller popped his head in about 4 months ago, dont know what he is up to. Garm gave the impression he was leaving but who knows, Shigsy still here.
Still, there will be plenty of people you know who have dropped with disgust at encroachig carebearism.
Have fun with the Yarr.

Haha, you utter <insert vulgar term here>!!
That all sounds good, aside from the probing stuff. I live for probing. Well, used to anyway.
I loved the old, old non-chance based system. Absolutely loved it. The one that was brought in with exploration I was disappointed with, but still kinda enjoyed even though it was diceroll-online and completely defeated the object of having player skill involved. Bookmark dropping and the like kept it challenging enough to keep me happy.
How's the new system? Is it more noobified than the exploration system? More chance based? And is there at least some room for proper old school 'practice makes perfect' style probing rather than 'cross fingers and hope for a lucky roll' type probing.
I've heard that you can move probes around without redropping them and that probe dropping skills are obsolete. How accurate is that?

Damien, was AWESOME to speak to an old fellow "nasty person" yesterday - all this talk of the old days is making me feel nostalgic, hehe.
(BTW, I'm an old corpy of Damien and the old Turbulent crew from 2005-2007, but looking all nice at the moment). Funny how we all come back at the same time.
Verone, glad to see you're still knocking around mate.
I definitely noticed the "new opportunities" for piracy since I've been playing again (only a week or 2). Not been naughty (yet) but hey, no harm in doing a bit of scanning to get the blood flowing thru the fingers ;-)
Anyone seen our old CEO Tribalbleb since we all disbanded?

Yes and no.
The new system is technically more skill based and you have to have the scanning skills up fairly high to probe out some things.
You can move probes around remotely using the map screen and have to triangulate in on a signature using 4 probes to get a warpable result.
The actual scan time is peanuts, its moving probes around millimetres at a time to get a warpable result that will take time.
Also...
Wormhole Space.
Its a pirates wet dream as there is Delayed Local- you cant be seen in local unless you speak in it!
There is a good market for people with decent probing skills atm.
Its also full of juicy carebears that assume they are safe in 0.0 due to the fact they are in a wormhole they scanned out.

That sounds good to me. I cut my teeth on the old 3 probe system and moving 1au probes about using the tiniest of warps to get them in vertical range once I'd narrowed the target down was my idea of fun (sad eh?)
Back then as you probably know it was probe in range - result, probe not in range - no result. If I got no result, it's because I screwed up, not because a dice roll didn't go my way. If the new system's more like that I'm happy.
I think I should be good on the probing skills front unless more have been added since I left. Can you run me off a quick list of the applicable skills so I can double check though?
Also if it's 4 probes, is it still triangulation? (quadrangulation?) Meh, I dunno.

Interesting question.
I can get a 100% signature with 3 probes, but no less than 3, but the game wont actually let you warp to it unless the sig is covered within the boundarys of 4 probes and you have a 100% hit
These days from what i understand about the indepth mechanics the % hit you get on a signature depends on your scan probe strength (skill modified + rig and ship mods) with the signature res of the target and its Sensor strength factored in; higher scan res means better hits, higher sensor strength of target ship/sig reduces hit quality.
Some of the rarest 0.0 Grav sites are either bugged or require maxed out scan strength skills and covops to get to 100% on.
Deadspaces also no longer divide sig res by 10 so MR's in lowsec are easier to probe down.
Cant give you a list of skills off the top of my head give the wiki a try.

Quadrangulation sounds about right.

I've gotten 100% strength hits with just one probe, but of course, it's not warpable until four probes are in range of it.

Astrometric Rangefinding, Astrometric Pinpointing, Astrometric Acquisition. Acquisition (IIRC) is more or less useless past level 3 as it shortens an already very short scan time.

I've just had a look through the wiki and I have to say, I like it! The new probe system seems just like the old,old probing system, but without the bookmark dropping and warping about, and with a bit of chance based stuff, but not an annoying amount.
I'll give it a whirl when I get back from work and let you know.

What kind of lame lovey-dovey pirates are you guys. This thread makes me sick.
P.S. There are more than 3 pirates in Eve. Just because 1 or 2 of the famous ones quit doesn't mean the other 186,000 have left.
P.P.S. One-billion ISK says Garmon is back and playing again within 3 months.

Hey, just because we pirate it doesn't mean we don't like kittens and fluffy things and tea parties with dolls and stuff. I mean just the other day I was remarking to my favourite bear that the screams and whines of carebears reminds me of the lullabies I heard as a small child, nestled in my bed, dreaming of faction loot. I can feel the love. Can you?

Once they could no longer sit on their gate camp perch 23/7 and were the ones getting ganked in the belt...Well it appears piracy is over for them..
Yes there is of course Militia blobs as well as other blobs to deal with, but as long as you don't make your self a easy target in the busy systems there is plenty of priacy to go around. Not to mention the addition of WH space which is essentially non sov null sec with no local.

Let's see...a few old Turby have settled into Syndicate with various corps/alliances there. Placid's still a shifting morass of piracy (All the names have changed again since last I visited, but am going to be there for a while to annoy someone).
Scan probing is full of new awesome sauce and win. (You need 4 probes now instead of three, but you can move'em around in space instead of having to have a crap-ton of triangulation bookmarks)
Welcome back, maybe we'll see you around. --
