Why has this drop happened over the last four months
Is it something to do with summer
Is there another game which is taking people away from EVE

Um but if u look back over last 5 years every summer max online drops 10-20% over the northern summer months. It always bounces back and recovers

Traditionally summer tends to see a drop in figures as people look out the window and see sunny weather and spend more time at BBQ's than level 4's. The winter patch usually boosts figures back up. Co-host of PODDED Podcast http://podded.libsyn.com/ |

Yes, and yes. This game is taking people away from EVE. It's unplayable 9 months out of the year in some regions, so get it while its hot! _ |

In theory it is awesome, but in reality (lol) it isnt.
No patches and no expansions at all. Sure the dev might have done a pretty good job when it was released, but still enough bugs and inbalances to be fixed. Permadeath is never fun. Realism can be fun, but they are going just too far with outside.

There was a mass banning of farming accounts recently. Looks like CCP underestimated the actual number of bots that were in game. |

They call it the summer lull, when people start going outside and stop shooting each other with spaceships. EVE releases two expansions per year, one in summer to help maintain sub numbers during the lull and one in winter to hit the market at peak play time and expand the userbase. Combined with the pre-summer peak due to the early summer expansion release, this summer is seeing a larger drop than usual. When summer ends, that will start to recover and by winter we'll be setting new records again.
It happens every year more or less like this.

Well another thing is this socket closed issue that is affecting a LOT of customers including myself which sadly makes a game like EVE unplayable(unless station twirling and skill training is your thing). I know a lot of ppl have also claimed to have emorage quit over said issue. I am still trying to work out a solution but the future is bleak...

Unfortunately a friend of mine has quit over that. Really, CCP do need to sort out their bugs, they can tip players over the edge of staying or going. If this game wants to grow the amount and seriousness of the games bugs will cause a much bigger issue I think as current players tend to be more forgiving. Thinks like the sound, scanning and even the forums look terrible for new players. That's not counting the more subtle bugs there are.
Summer does have an impact though, another game (WOW) has a massive decrease in activity recently, although that may be because those Devs are busy wrecking the game.
EDIT: Actually the drop is very small if you allow for Summer and the removal of Macro miners.

I tried it, it's a lot of grind for little reward. It's also horribly unbalanced - something to do with the character creation process has a great influence on your class.

what are you talking about, the last expansion was huge, they really buffed the chinese, korean, and terrrorist factions, and added an American Geocentricism mechanic and mindless violence mechanic. still no release date on the affordable space expansion they've been talking about for years though. __________________________________________________ I was Amarr before they were the FOTM and I'll be Amarr after it! The 53K performance was just after the release of Apocrypha.
Traditionaly, all big EvE expansions always generate a new record of frequentation.
Also, this release was followed by the commercial deployement of the BOX edition of EvE. This helped a few.
Now, for the drop :
1) IRL Economic crysis. This don't help, there is some priorities, and also others games who are free if required (AO, etc...).
2) GTC price raised (See 1... Not the best moment to do this ^^), in $ or ISK, and this don't help.
3) EvE Premium only. Same if CCP ½ estimated + (they don't retrieve data) that there would be only 5% of players who wouldn't be able to launch Premium, it is still 5%. Probably more than 5% had some FPS dropping problem and be tired of it today (please, avoid me the "graphic card at 40$" speech, this is just stupid).
4) Defeaning silence, or bugged sound system (modern game without a working sound engine in 2009 ? I don't think that a new customer can appreciate that)
5) Bugs, deficiencies, reversing communication politic, etc...
Is EvE dying ? No, it isn't.
But CCP should focus on the actual problems than release new expansions.
Also, they need to release some patchs more frequently, and not wait for the new expansion to release them as they do today (apart some critical ones).
About the "summer time" argument used by some readers here, it is just wrong. We can see it in the last Coldfront graphic :
In end 2007/early 2008, there was also an expansion : Trinity, who explained the record of frequentation of this time (new graphic engine and other things).
We can see that at all time, summer don't seem have an influence in EvE. _______ Local is fine, period.
