http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/07/forced-to-connect-eas-cc-4-requires-always-on-internet.ars
Command and Conquer 4 will require gamers to have an active Internet connection at all times, even when playing a single-player campaign. EA says not to worry, but gamers wanting to play on the go are sure to be annoyed.
"As of right now, you need to be online all the time to play C&C 4. This is primarily due to our 'player progression' feature so everything can be tracked. C&C 4 is not an MMO in the sense of World of Warcraft, but conceptually it has similar principles for being online all the time," Community Leader APOC wrote."
BAHAHAHAHAHAHA
If you're already enraged, don't be. We're assured that this is no big deal. "While some may be taken aback by this, we've been testing this feature internally with all of our world-wide markets," APOC continued. "We wanted to make sure it wouldn't take away any significant market or territory from playing the game. We have not found or seen any results that have made us think otherwise." You won't need a broadband connection, in fact you'll be able to use a dial-up connection to get the game to play.
How kind of them. Too bad for all those people who dont have internet access... for example people living on SHIPS; fisherman, navy, etc.
Dont worry. You will be able to pirate a copy and not have to deal with this DRM. Like usual DRM only hurts the legal people. ------------------------ To make a megathron from scratch, you must first invent the eve universe. ------------------------ Life sucks and then you get podded. |

Or maybe if they stopped wasting time making crap games and spent it on making amazing DRM, they could just sell the DRM to us in a box by itself. I reckon that's what'll happen next. -omg-

You must be a pirate then... after all everyone's connection is solid unless you are downloading illegal games and movies.
Thusly DRM locks you out of your game. ------------------------ To make a megathron from scratch, you must first invent the eve universe. ------------------------ Life sucks and then you get podded. |

They do make good games, very very few of them, and they ruin several more than they make, but you know, they make some very solid games.

You know, as a guy that lives in practically Pirate City , (bleh, you can even buy pirated people here too ) , I don't know why EA, believes that this anally knee jerk reaction to piracy is going to solve its problems of "lost revenue".
I usually, without shame have pirated perhaps a good share of games over the years, but those I find good and solid I buy , no excuse, but down here, you can get anything 10000 times cheaper, so it's a matter of choice for me.
But I'm one against thousands. Making DRM crap that EVENTUALLY gets broken/cracked it's a futile attempt to seal the leaking dam with a small plastic patch.
I haven't seen ANY SINGLE GAME ever, no matter how good their DRM, being left untouched by the ravages of people that due to tenacity/boredom/monetary gain or simply cuz they can, can and WILL break/crack it.
The only way to have a true DRM is to make every game come with a real person attached to it that watches you.
I know people here that work downtown that can WTFBBQPWN any kind of thing that has a circuit board/chips/silicate on it, and they barely even made it pass High school.
They sell pirated DVD's that are crystal clear HI Q Blu Ray even with phony menus and options, they even have the decency to blur out "FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION/PROPERTY OF XXXX BIG HOLLYWOOD STUDIO NOT FOR RESALE" messages that pop sometimes on the movies, and a couple weeks later they get the regular movie with official menus and without the messages with full dolby digital surround sound and as many languages as you need.
They ModChip any XBox/PS3/Wii to play practically any crap you can insert on them, and they usually come preloaded or with bonus **** Dvd's.
I mean, I don't even want to think what they can do In taiwan/china where they even fake cars and that's old news.
Bleh, we can pirate people here, they prolly pirate SOULS there already.
DRM is the tool of the ignorant CEO or Company Division that believes oppresion is the key to maintaining its hold.
Like someone said earlier, it only hurts legal users.
I could even live with a Steam like Offline mode, but this is just too much
How long till fake server mods emulate EA's online signal to the game?

EA is probably going to install some sort of background 'folding@home' type of proggy with the new cnc4 to do research on the sly and make even moar money using thier customers computers as distibuted computational nodes.

If that's all it does I think you'll have to be grateful. Creating this "MMO-type connection required" single player game allows them install quite a neat bit of Spyware, as well as provide a nice security leak for malware to use. EA isn't exactly known for quick responses to bugs and issues, any security weakness in that addition to C&C is going to have months to be abused before (and if) it's finally fixed.

I can't think of a decent EA game that wasn't almost finished before EA bought the original developer, or in a few cases produced by one of their acquired studios before they sacked them all.
EA are good at the mass market games that are aimed at casual gamers, and extracting the most money possible from them (for example all the expansion packs for the sims and the sports games they re-release every year). They try to break into the more hardcore market by buying up the developers of the games/franchises we love, but then get rid of the developers as a cost cutting exercise and then don't know what to do with the rights they bought. Either they do nothing, or release a really bad sequel. EA games are possibly the worst thing to happen to gaming in it so far short life.
The only thing worrying about their highly restrictive DRM is that other developers may follow.

EA can go **** itself, I havent bought a product if theirs since the original Command & Conquer, in times there was still a measure of respect for the customer, as opposed to a blatant forgerer.
I like to actually buy most of my gaming entertainment, except for those titles that insult you for being a thief before playing the actual thing, which comes to roughly 90% of stuff you buy. I return these and subsequently pirate them for good measure. -----

Or, have none of the game logic client-side, while constantly changing the server-side code. Can you say "EVE Online" ? Or just about any MMO ?
Granted, you could probably argue that there are WoW private servers working on reverse-engineered server code, but I can bet they're seldom up-to-date with the latest official version... and EVE averts this even more by making it pointless to even try to have a private server (what would be the point, heh).

Actually, I'm more curious how their marketing department manages to spin all this negative response (which is bound to show up in their market-research) into something positive for the board. Those people must be really good to conceal the fact that most gamers hate the company's guts from the directors.

Westwood gave us Dune 2.
For that they will always have a special place in my heart. EA, on the other hand, will always have a special place on the end of my boot.
Was C&C 2 the last one to be DRM free?
