It kills me every year that we have to watch the tournament over low-definition streaming. It kills me that we have watch whatever the camera crew and producer decide to show us rather than being able to pick what we're watching ourselves.
What EVE really needs is a way to record events on a particular grid and be able to play them back later. It'd help with the Tournaments and with fleet combat. I'd pay money for replays of the tournament, I think, if I were able to control what I was looking at with the full glory of the EVE client.
Anyone agree? "Actually, I enjoy this in the same vague, horrible way I enjoy watching the A-Team." - P. Opus |

Edited by: Tar om on 20/07/2009 22:16:41 Well every year it is a fuzzy mess.... you can't read any text and you don't really know who is on what side. Instead of showing what is essential a poor quality screen capture, they should be writing a routine to do a sort of one way version of the grid so that regular EVE clients can take the information on the grid and render it for the viewer on his own machine. One way because you don't want the viewer to have a ship on grid.
Limitations: Coding effort, another client patch, viewer requires an EVE client (and active sub). Advantages: Less b/w per viewer, full quality viewing, viewer can choose viewpoints, move camera etc.
edit: and please - even if nothing else is changed - give the commentators control of a mouse pointer so at least they can say "THIS ship here is doing xyz" instead of "Yeah, the ABC is really doing XYZ" when there is no way of knowing which ABC they are talking about and unless you know your navy vexors from your ishtars, you're screwed anyway because they all look like fuzzy blobs. -- Come join the carebear napfest train, everyone is welcome! |

This has been thrown around both internally at the office and externally, here on the forums. It's a good idea, but the way the grid system and effects system are tied together means that it's a massive undertaking to create a client or ingame view that would display events and allow you to interact with them (moving camera, etc) in this fashion. This fact is then compounded by what might be a limited amount of use such a system would have; I've no idea how many people would be interested in utilising such a system.
If you don't mind not seeing it immediately, the Youtube uploads were all in HD last time and I've no reason to believe they will be anything but this year.

Do you have any idea how incredible it would be to be able to record historical fleet battles from several angles? Just imagine the end of the Imperian Age trailer with two clashing armies in highdef, recorded with full effects and post processing. I'd pay hundreds of millions of isk for recordings of historical fleet battles like FAT, Z-K, E-o, Obe or just our last roaming gang. Heck, i'd pay real money for a properly edited documentary Dvd "The most destructive fleet battles of New Eden"
The ability to send our movie makers the recordings from the battlefield for them to replay and capture from multiple angles at once would be an incredible asset to get away from our current sisi recordings and more towards real engagements.
Just imagine the possibilities as a marketing tool, too. Nothing says "EPIC" quite as a huge fleet battle projected on a large screen with explosions and dogfights everywhere, and telling everyone "oh by the way, every ship is piloted by one person. Wait a bit, in five minutes reinforcements for both sides will arrive. we currently have six hundred people fighting here..." ----------------------------------------------

Indeed, but that's an entire other task entirely. I was referring to a live stream of what was occuring at the Tournament which was then played back in the client or through a special tool of some sort.
Having support for recording is another thing entirely, and I have no doubt, as you say, that that would be greatly desired by the players.

Edited by: Batolemaeus on 21/07/2009 00:23:33 Well, some games feature similar functions. Take Guild Wars as an example, they built the game to support recording and playback, even streaming. Playing back records of what happened on a grid from the eyes of a pilot isn't that far away from streaming it. I know that we have quite a huge problem because no client knows exactly what's going on with every other thing on grid, but even recording and streaming from the eyes of just one pilot would be awesome. ----------------------------------------------

Every fight Triumvirate will participate in, will be filmed by myself through fraps. I will compile it and post it in the vids section when done. Will give a players view of the event with far better quality. But alas, I am only one man in one team.

Great idea, I look forward to seeing the results. I hope other people have the software, time etc to do the same.
