For fun - I decided to run the Epic Mission Arc. I like running missions when they're fresh and new - and since this wouldn't be the zillionth Damsel Rescue or Angel Extravaganza I figured it was worth a go.
And it has been thus far. Very enjoyable.
One thing about the Epic Arc is that you move around EVE a fair bit. You're in Gallente space then Caldari etc. etc. The moves so far haven't been far, but when you're moving an entire mission run infrastructure, they're significant in time and kind of annoying.
So, I decided I'd create a 'mobile base'. I'm using it for mission running but I expect the idea would work for other things.
I took an Itty IV I had laying around unused and stuffed some cans in it. I then unfit the three ships that I was using for missions and repackaged them. One CovOps Frig, an Assault Ship and a Salvage Frigate. The mods, drones and ammo for these went into cans named for the appropriate ship and then everything got tucked neatly into the Iteron.
Having made sure to save the fits before I stripped them, I can now pack my entire operation in about three minutes and be on my way. Unpacking is just a matter of emptying the cans into the hangar, assembling the ship, accessing the saved fits and pressing the 'Fit' button. Everything goes right where it's supposed to go. All I need to do is move ammo into the cargo hold and I'm ready to take on the next mission, having had to only fly the one ship to it with all the others carried.
It's a far cry from an Orca or what have you but for a lower end character it offers easy mobility for a small force and the three ships I mentioned are perfect for the Epic Arc missions. One combat ship (I fit mine T2 but fly with blasters to make things challenging), a CovOps for fast courier stuff - even into low sec if need be and a light frigate with an AB and a couple of salvagers which paid for itself in its first time out.
Anyway, thought I'd share with folks. Others might find the concept useful for missioning, plexing or what have you.

Edited by: DCThunder on 23/07/2009 15:56:45 Great idea. How much room was left over for schlepping loot/salvage or did you leave it in place or sell it directly?
You could probably also stick a shuttle in there too if needed. |

Actually, I'm carrying around a Gallente Shuttle BP (smaller than a shuttle) and just build one if I need it and then sell it at a small profit. Done that a couple of times thus far and made around 1500 ISK profit each time over what I could sell the Trit for and the cost of the construction.
IIRC there's around 1000-1500 m3 left in the ship after everything's packed. The cans help and most of them have some empty space inside if need be as well. Since the fit button 'finds' everything for the ships you really only need one can for all the fits - or none at all if you prefer, but I like having one per ship.
Most of the loot, and salvage I sell immediately, though. I only haul stuff if the price is poor or I want to keep it for some reason.

I actually do this with all my ships. For example, in my Myrm, I carry a smaller container with all my fits (PvP, PvE, etc.) and then just stop off at a station and refit, leaving the container behind. I go do the thing, and then refit for the trip home and take the can.
Works really well for me, and prevents those fruitless Market searches when out in the boonies :)

I do something similar, but with level 4 missions it's more problematic for me. I use a Hurricane to loot and salvage, and since I rigged it with salvage tackle I can't repackage it without losing 75 million worth of rigs. This means I make multiple trips. I've been thinking of training for an Orca to use for that purpose.
Back when I did the epic arc, I did it all in a Caracal. I fitted heavy missile launchers to it, carried a set of assault missile launchers inside, a full set of fittings for different foes and ammo. I just ran from station to station in that ship, and anytime the mission locations changed I just packed everything back inside and moved on. |

A very good idea and well thought out logistics. I guess as you say an orca could also be used in the same way as long as you could move it to the required locations safely enough. |

Absolutely. I suppose you could do it with a Freighter if you were running all unrigged ships but when it comes to rigs - well I feel your pain. My L4 ships are too.
An Orca would be ideal but they're a heavy hit to both the pocketbook and the skill train time. Many's the time I've wanted one though, when moving a missioning base from place to place.

Thank you.
In Null Sec, of course, carriers and the like have been used for this kind of thing forever. This is just a high sec 'cheapo' version of that, really.
Of course I can't pilot a carrier yet. Soon though - soon...

Edited by: Myyona on 23/07/2009 20:43:48 Long time ago somebody mentioned on the forums doing this with a freighter and I thought it was the most awesome idea ever. I "quickly" trained up for one and it is indeed awesome to be able to carry a wide range of ships and fittings around.
EDIT: And I have really never bothered with rigs anyhow. I appreciate the ability to repackage my ship much more. |

I have used a variation of this as well. One thing you might consider is a traveling BPO/BPC set. Similar to your shuttle BPO, you carry the BPCs for your ship, ammo, etc. (assuming you can build them). That way you can replace most of your gear without a whole lot of shopping around and flying around (cause most of the goodies are in hubs). This reduces the amount of gear you have to haul around.
Freighter version: you CAN move rigged ships. Use courier contracts. They have a limit of 120k m3 per contract, so nothing larger than that will fit with rigs. Everything else has to be repackaged. If you combine a freighter with this concept, you can also carry mining ships/equipment and even mins, parts, etc. Don't tempt gankers by traveling with too valuable a cargo though.
