I'm kind of wondering why there isn't a topic about this subject yet, or maybe I have just missed it, but anyway.
I recently started playing eve and I just love the game. But what I do wonder about, how long do people think that eve will keep on going.
The game has been out for several years, and has been growing in subscribers since it's release and it is still doing that. And in comparison to other mmo's it is actually a game that was made to last long, instead of having a certain amount of content that you finish and then wait for the developer to give you new, eve is more of a do it yourself, and the developer has less of a role of keeping it own game alive (a bit weird to say, but I guess you get the point).
So if you had to make a guess for how much longer eve will last, and for what reasons, i'm very curious to hear them.

This.
Topics pop up from time to time. But considering the game died years ago, there is little reason anymore to create topics about the death of EVE.

IMHO EVE has more potential (limited atm by money/manpower and technology) than any other mmo. Enough to cover the next 5-10 years.

Since they continually grow the game, I doubt it will die anywhere in the near future. Like you said, they seem to only gain subscribers and with the way its built, there is always something going on.
Plus, there are a lot of things that EVE can expand on: walking in stations which is already being developed, being able to walk on the planets, new ships, being able to colonize planets, etc. There are so many ways that EVE can expand.

eve will keep growing for some time. Ambulation will drastically boost subscriber numbers, and give CCP the money they need to charge head on into World of Darkness mmo development.
I suspect that in about 10 years, when CPU power is a good 3 orders of magnitude over what eve started with, then CCP might start planning out an eve 2. (real time combat, each bullet from an autocannon fully tracked in space, ect, stuff that takes cpu power not even dreamed of when eve started development). Until then, eve has a long long way to go (planetary interaction and walking in stations).

EVE will continue to grow and prosper until one fine day it becomes so vast that the real and virtual universes change places and identity.

Yarr and in 20-30 years we all have small little "POD's" at home which generate a VR World for us (just like the simulation pods used in Fallout 3 if anyone played that)
But I'm a little jealous at those freaky kids in 2200 who will probably have holo decks and play Duke Nukem on it ----------------------------- OMG THE SKY IS FALLING! Contract me all your stuff so I can save it! |

You mean we will be able to mess with the billions of people who currently don't play eve, because they will be all new and confused and even people who haven't started yet will have played for years more? -------------------------------------------------

Much in the same way that a duck is not a rock (although which is more intelligent is very much open to debate and some will say the difference isn't really important enough to point out).

A better argument for the creation of an immortality serum, I have not heard. Damn 2200 kids, selfish brats, hogging all that future to them selves!

EVE will be one of the last MMOs to close shop, if that ever happens (people stop playing online games, that is)

I think the future of Eve and how long it will last will depend on that key address by Hilmar PTtursson at the games convetion in August. Hilmar will announce a new project, that CCP is working on.
If that has something to do with Eve, this is a signal that devs are still focusing on it and develop it, keeping pace with the fast-paced mmo industry. Most likely Hilmar will announce that CCP is now working on WoD. Eve will not be the main focus anymore, a few balance patches here and there, walking in station somewhere 2010 or 2011, but nothing of fundamental importance. Needless to say that this is the beginning of the end of an MMO under todays large number of available MMOs (competition doesn't sleep) and where several new and innovative MMOs are coming out every year. So I'm very interested in what Hilmar will say in August.

Eve should have little problem rolling along for at least the next 10 years. So your uber character skill plans are safe.

EvE's mechanics are largely immune to the two big problems that eventually overwhelm most other MMOs - rampant mudflation and huge amounts of obsolete content.
EvE plays the most like a pen-and-paper game of any MMO I've tried thus far, and thus I expect it to have a similar longevity.

Ultima Online is still active. It was released in 1997.
EVE can have a long life too if players stay interested.

^ This...but i dont think CCP realise the massive potential of EVE to make money...if they did they wouldnt release half finished "patchs" and embarass themselves as developers as badly as they have.

This chaps kinda close there, as I see it the point is not how long eve will last, but how long ccp will last. Eve is a finely crafted mindaltering drug, with hundreds of thousands of hoplessly addicted users, and ccp own's the tree that makes the stuff, question is how long u can keep a garden growing in iceland

I've always firmly believed that CCP isn't all that interested in growth. If they were, they would've fixed the horrid new player experience by now. The one with 50% retention rate or less. ______________ Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn. |
