Edited by: Durzel on 30/07/2009 09:14:31 Frankly I'm not sure there's much point expending too much effort trying to stop people getting keyloggers. At the risk of causing offence the sort of people who end up getting keyloggers on their PC are generally the ones who think they've inherited a load of money from a Nigerian prince when they receive an email about it, or happily type in their bank details & PIN because an email asks them to. In other words: they'll just end up getting keyloggers on their system from any number of other dodgy websites.
The better solution imo is to strike at the core of the problem. Stop new accounts being able to link off site for a period of time (30 days?), anyone who needs to link to somewhere in that time and is a genuine player can just post a non-hyperlinked link in a thread and everyone else will know whether it's legit or not.
With the greatest of respect making someone go to an intermediary page warning them about visiting an external site when they've just seen a porno pic and want to watch the "video" aren't going to have the presence of mind to even read the warning. If they're stupid enough to click on it to begin with, they're probably stupid enough to click through on the subsequent page.

Really? It's that easy is it? That's how the world works is it? Did you not notice that people, very very powerful important people, seem to put a lot of effort into this subject matter?
And all along they could have just asked you for the Final Solution to all internet scams?
And to think, microsoft, sophos, apple and the other billions of dollars worth of computer security experts can be replaced by you and your soundbyte. Amazing.

Hey guize, i think i have one of these ideas that everyone talks about nowadays
Instead of the big warning, you should animate a bit.
You could have a Picture of beejay rebel with a speech bubble over him saying some of his catchphrases such as; "im so startled" , "local spike, 2 people just jumped in", "aaaauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmm guize, we may have a problem (Where the aaaaaaaaauuuuuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmm is so long that the link auto clicks and you get a keylogger anyway)" Or admiral Ackbar and a sign saying "warning this link may be a trap!"
General Tso's Alliance fully endorse this (****ing terrible) idea! And to finish, thank you for reading my sig -------------------------------------------------- If you are still reading i would probably hav posted by now |

CCP, I have to say I'm not overly fond of these changes. Actually, it's just really the big one: the warning page. So it is with a heavy heart that I must tell you to

That was the best solution in my opinion. Blizzard did it for its World of Warcraft Forums, and it has worked well for the past years, so it's a proven concept.
Good stuff!

Come on... CCP can't be held responsible for that level of stupidity. The URL is shown in full text, big bold yellow letters. If you can't read, it's your problem.

So if they knew the method by which CCP breaks the link (and it appears that capital letters are an issue), they could substitute in place their keylogger installer at the predicted CCP created link? Hmmmm....
Well, enough people are saying "Just don't click on the link noob" to have me convinced that I'm just not pro enough, now if only they could do something useful with all that inate knowledge, like curing cancer. Or teaching.

CCP Capslock, I have suggested it before and I will suggest it again. Add a 10 minute delay between the creation of new threads. If someone has an urge to post more than 6 new threads every hour they need to seek help anyways so the impact for the users should be zero.
During each of the spam attacks the spammer is on average free to roam for 10 minutes before the moderators have started to act on the reports at which stage they have posted 13-15 threads with a single character. Yes I have counted them as I have been going along reporting them, including checking the time until they start to vanish from the system.
As soon as I see a spam post I click on the char and check the posting history which makes it really easy to report their threads as they are created.

I can't see how having this intermediary would immediately help as those that click a link on the forums are going to click another. It's like the CSPA charges in-game when you convo someone, after a while people just click through them without reading.
Having the intermediary page DOES open the option to do some nice stuff, though. For example, you can log the referral URL to see what thread clicks to a particular link are coming from. That could be hooked into the forum to autoreport (but not autodelete!) any thread referring people to a recognised offending link. You could also see what percentage of people went on to actually click that link, which might help estimate the effect of the spammers on the forum population. In addition, that intermediary page opens up the option to filter or obscure harmful links more effectively. Rather than filtering every post made to the forum for offending links, it's just every hit to that page that needs filtered.

I have sig's OFF for similar reasons. Kinda sad, since in the past I've had smiles and chuckles over many eve sigs, but you just never know where those pictures are hosted (and what is going to get served up) and the recent activeX exploits and the latest killbit circumvention to re-exploit old un-fixed problems...
Not that I personally use IE in any of its incarnations when I can avoid it, but the principle is the same. Eve and its players is considered a target so it pays to be cautious.
And thats not even touching on the far darker subject of players doing it deliberately as an "extension" of their ingame activities.
btw: if you are not logged in, then sigs do not show.

I have two solutions: - Accounts have to be paying for 3 months before they can post images to Eve-O. - Anyone caught extensively crossposting (which is to say, covering every single sub forum!) the same or very similar post gets an insta-forum ban for 30 days. It's against the rules anyway, so anyone legit that breaks it deserves what they get.
But srsly, the images have got to stop.

This, as well as two other suggestions:
1. Currently threads that get deleted seem to actually just get hidden, which reduces the number of legitimate threads appearing in the first page of some quieter sections of the forums quite dramatically (example: Jita Park Speakers Corner). Instead of a hotfix in your code to simply hide the naughty threads, why not just exclude them from your SQL in the first place, you know, like SELECT threads FROM threadtable WHERE thread_op_banninated != 1?
2. Also, on the main forum page, it looks a bit silly seeing all these alphabet soup names as the author of the latest topic, even when those topics are deleted. I would guess it'd require another tweak of the SQL to simply filter these out as well, yes?
