Edited by: Atomos Darksun on 31/07/2009 06:36:11 I have enough headaches keeping my personal operation going, and the occasional family visitations, let alone upkeeping dozens of stupid people's computers and networking.

I must appreciate those guys since everytime I look at even a simple server farm and see the miles of cable that thing is, and the pain that is to plug each and every cable in the right socket makes shivers down my spine.
thank you sysadmin o7 ---

I don't want to be a jerk but I'm fresh out of recognition to give. Most people don't get any recognition for doing their job. Teachers, the President, secretaries and whoever else will just need to be satisfied with being paid like the rest of. All these holidays just hurt worker morale.
To add some salt to the wound, all the "sysadmins" I've encountered are snotty brats.

Well, imagine how irritating it would be to have to ask for access to certain web sites. I wouldnt work anywhere where they did that to me. Screw 'em. Where I go on the Internet is up to me. If a company has **** sysadmins, I work somewhere else. :)

It's not like you plug all the cables in at one end and in a bunch attempt to sort out the other ends by plugging them in and seeing if it works.
In any case, that is the job of the Network Engineer and not the SysAdmin.

You'll have a hard time finding a job with a good company if you refuse a job based on that thinking Unless you're the policy maker, you won't normally have a say on that sort of thing. But FYI, neither do we. We are told what is/isn't appropriate, which members of staff need which privaledges/restrictions and we are just responsible for the technical side of making that happen. It's unfair to blame us because you can't access your hotmail when it's the company's policy that 'staff shouldn't be allowed to check personal Email from work'. We just enforce the company's policy and make sure you users can get on with your jobs.
Where I am now, staff can't browse any web mail services, social networking sites or forums, nor adult sites, hate speech, etc. As a one off, a member of staff could ask us and he'll have access to hotmail for a few minutes as a favour, for example to download an attachment for work purposes. But he doesn't have authority to ask us to unblock it permanently for everyone. A member of the senior management however could make the request, and then we'd honour it.
Also, a member of staff in one dept for example, wouldn't necessarily need access to our accounting data. We have policies then that grant access to that data to only staff who need it. There's plenty of that sort of thing to worry about, so frankly your 'need' to browse facebook while at work is not very high on the priority list.
The Internet at work is really only needed insofar as it helps the company do whatever it is they do. Many companies will have zero web access whatsoever, allowing only Email and maybe VPN connections for a database/sharing data between offices. The Internet as you know it is for gaming, shopping, etc and it's not the same as what a company will need it for. And they want more productive employees, not those who spend all day commenting on their friends drunken-night-out photos on facebook. Nor would we want you downloading copyrighted material onto our servers with torrents that take up all our bandwidth (preventing genuine company usage).
Besides, get a smartphone and tariff with unlimited data, you can browse the web and check your Email all you like without our restrictions. -------------

Good luck with that then..
I'm sure all good companys allow it's users to look up pron, Virus infected sites and download torrents all day.
Till then i'll block what da bosses want blocked and it gets unblocked either by HR or Da bosses.
Company paid for internet is for work stuffs, not peoples addiction to Ebay and facebook.
