Edited by: Mr Energizer on 02/08/2009 03:48:40 Okay so I've run eve on linux before (many moons ago). I recently updated my distro and I can't get it working... I looked around for a solution and I couldn't find anyone with this specific problem (actually it seems that the errors I'm getting are common and usually don't kill the game).
The command I'm using to start it is: $ wine explorer /desktop=EVE1,1680x1050 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe"
The splash screen shows up, it spits out some errors and then the splash screen goes away. Eve never loads.
All I am getting in the console is: err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} not registered err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} could be created for context 0x1 fixme:heap:HeapSetInformation 0x8d0000 0 0x33fc6c 4
-- The Conditions -- Hardware: HP dv9000 2.0ghz Core2Duo w/ 2GB RAM & nVidia GeForce 8600M GS [nVidia drivers] Distro: Fedora 11 (fedora/rpmfusion repos all up-to-date) Kernel: 2.6.29.6-213.fc11.i686.PAE Wine Version: 1.1.23 (with winetools mods and DX9c installed) EVE install file: EVE_Premium_Setup_94168_m.exe (Apocrypha)
modified user.reg (stock doesn't work either):
[Software\\Wine\\Direct3D] 1249173996 "DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl" "OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo" "PixelShaderMode"="enabled" "RenderTargetLockMode"="auto" "UseGLSL"="enabled" "VertexShaderMode"="hardware" "VideoMemorySize"="512"
Anyone know what I'm missing? This is quite frustrating. I'm thinking it might just not work with wine 1.1.23. That would suck because I don't feel like building wine from source (the rpm's aren't showing up in the dev or test repos).
If no one has any idea this might just serve as a testimonial to one system/distro combination that doesn't work.

Mmh I get exactly that behavior when I try to use a vanilla .wine-dir.
vcrun2005 (winetricks) and a native dll override for _36.dll fixes it for me.
Installing native directx always kills all wine appliations for me but since I use debian it shouldn't be the problem.
Wine .23 should work very well with eve, most apocrypha-related fixes came in .21 or so.

wine 1.1.24 was and is the best I've gotten for 64-bit openSuSE with nVidia graphics.
What distribution did you say you used?
If you are running something like Fedora or openSuSE or Mandrake (you mentioned RPMs) then beware the 1.1.26 release. It's broke.
See here: Wine 1.1.26 Yet another crash in latest git version...
and the wine bug: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19219
Currently wine's release manager, Alex Julliard, is on vacation so no new releases have been made. Normally, 1.1.27 would be out this week.
Since the bug is due to something Julliard committed and he's very senior, it might not get fixed for quite some time. (In fact, one of the patches to revert in the wine bug notice is a Mac platform patch to disable Julliard's work when wine is compiled on a Mac.)
Sorry that your distro's repositories are not keeping up to date. Usually wine will either be on a private repository, such as a personal RPM repository on suse's build service, or some nightly-snapshot-experimental repository.
If you feel brave, http://www.rpmfind.net has an RPM search engine.
