As you may or may not know, Eve went on sale (for like 7 bucks for a new account) on steam, so I and 4 other friends bought the game totally unaware of how the game is meant to be played or what you do besides fly around in space.
I was really taken aback by all the hate and flame on the forums, as I've been thoroughly enjoying myself as have my friends. That said, I also really really enjoy how the inventory is set up. I'm not sure how it was before, so I don't know what I'm missing, but the inventory as is is pretty user friendly and kickass.
I also think it's silly for -anyone- to claim the game is dying. We've only been playing a few days, but there's 20-40k players online at all times. If there was only a total of 40k unique users, spending ~$12 a month on the game, that's still $480,000 a month. And i'm sure there is a lot more than 40k unique subs.
I just wanted to offer my input on all your silly whining. Of all the game communities (League, WoW, MC most recent) i haven't seen such a big whiny WE'RE GONNA UNSUB mess, ever. It's simply astounding.
Even if I don't continue to play after one month, this game is beautifully crafted and incredibly in depth, it's just amazing. I'm enjoying myself, and it's too bad so many of you can't seem to do the same
EDIT: I also realized walking around may be a new feature? I actually thought it was really cool heh, why does no one want this? Kinda defeats making a character if you can't see him. I thought walking around in a little spacestation was interesting even if it adds nothing to gameplay. (also thanks for the steam sale to get us to try the game out Eve devs or steam devs, whoever does that) |

EVE is not like other games. We believe in some twisted way that we have a say in how the game is developed... It didn't go our way (or the way of those who have a disagreement).
Welcome to EVE, you get use to it.

If you ignore General Discussion and the Corporate and Alliance sub-forums there is a lot of useful information on how to play EVE in the forums.
There is only so much you'll learn from the tutorials. |

Just don't read the GD subforum.
Most of the rest is actually pretty good as far as video game forums go. Particularly in terms of asking for input/help, if you spend the time to do some research and frame your question properly.
CCP talks a lot about the "new player experience" and "player retention", while one of the best things they could do in these areas is just nuke this subforum altogether. |

Welcome aboard, the forums by no means demonstrate the feelings of all the people that play. A lot of players don't even bother with the forums to be honest, this has been proved time & time again by the annual hulkageddon event which is publicised in advance and people still fly hulks.
The only time that I can remember when the rage was actually justified is when someone at CCP leaked a document about microtransactions while CCP released an expansion that was very much unfinished with a cash store integrated into it.
Eve is indeed extremely deep, and probably very unlike any other game you've ever played, stick around, explore your options, be a carebear, be a pirate, venture into lawless space, kill stuff, be killed & basically have fun. It is a true sandbox with very very few rules, you will be scammed, you will be an unwilling participant in PVP but you have the oppurtunity to do unto others before they do unto you.
Fly safe 07 War hasn't been fought this badly since Olaf the Hairy, High Chief of all the Vikings, accidentally ordered 80,000 battle helmets with the horns on the inside. |

General forums isn't the place for this really. Not necessarily because of structure of the forum itself, but because of the people. If you're interested in Industry, try the science and industry forums - lots of helpful people over there. Look through a few pages before posting anything as you may find that most of your questions have already been answered within the past couple of days.
Another good resource is the EVE online subreddit (reddit.com/r/eve). Similarly, just look through a few pages. A lot of new people ask for advice there. Also, there are a temendous amount of guides and blogs that are tailored to very new players looking to begin their ventures. They'll tell you everything you need to know.
If there's any piece of advice (that I don't follow) I can give you for enjoying the game, it's don't fly alone. Find a corporation. They'll be able to offer you immediate assistance in getting started if they're that kind of bunch. |

Thanks for the info again! My friends and I are hoping to get another 2 friends to join up, and we'll hopefully start up a tiny mini corp just for us to have fun in. I understand going with one of the industry giants is probably better, but something about this game feels more fun and rewarding when sticking to close friends :)
I'll check out that subforum though! |

Oh! (Hi!) You're unaware! The forum is a haven for the delusional. You might notice 40,000 people don't post here. To the in-game population the forum is a joke and only fools post in it. I started posting here when I discovered CCP actually listens to these people. Anyone with any sense has already left town. |

It's not normally full of "I will unsub" posts. That only happens when you have stupid changes that upset large-ish percentages of the playerbase.
The last time it happened was last year after the Incarna update. And there have been times before as well. But normally, it's just full of (usually) good-humoured trolling and baiting.

There're a couple of reasons for all this:
First, in recent history, CCP has failed to respond to actions less extreme than mass unsubs combined with loud protests. Last summer's Jita riots were in response to an absurd failure of CCP to listen to very clear protestation on this forum. So the "Hey Guize, let's UNSUB NAO" meme is probably here to stay until CCP shows a significant pattern of listening to people on the forums (this new inventory is very nice, and will probably become great, but it's been released before it's ready, and quite a number of smart people on the forums have been telling CCP that for a while).
Second, there are two major camps on how EvE should evolve and change over time, specifically in relation to non-consensual PvP and Scams. The camp that would prefer to end non-consensual PvP (to head this off, Safe Zones would end non-consensual PvP by making leaving the zone = consent) and/or scamming tends to be very vocal about venting their frustration when they find themselves on the losing end of a non-consensual PvP encounter and tend to believe that CCP needs to take a much more active role in regulating the amount of power that groups of players can amass (OTEC, Burn Jita, HAG, etc. all have threads calling for CCP intervention). The core argument here is that EvE is a game and as such, players should be insulated from the parts of the game they do not enjoy. The camp that believe's that EvE's core is it's capacity for non-consensual PvP and/or Scamming also tends to be very vocal in defending the current state of the game that they chose to play because of that core idea. This camp tends to see groups projecting power (OTEC, etc) as a game feature, noting that in a sandbox Players create content, and anything that a group of players can do to increase intraplayer interaction is creating content. The core argument here is that EvE has always been a place for non-consensual PvP and Scamming and that changing that would violate their expectation that the basic premise of an MMO should remain consistent to allow people the continued enjoyment of a game they have supported. These camps don't really have much ground for compromise, since the issue is essentially a binary option, and neither camp is often able to convince anyone on the other camp, the argument tends to get loud and heated.
In summary, the reason the whining is this loud and unsub threats are this prevalent, is that we have a heated argument over the future of a game we're heavily invested in and a game company who has shown that they don't listen to much other than actual unsubs. Single-Shard, Player Driven-áSandbox.

Not quite. You asked for two analyses, one of why there are unsub threats, and one of why there is such hostility.
The first is because CCP has shown that it doesn't listen to anything but UnSubs.
The second is because of the two intractable groups. I fall on the side of enjoying the fact that non-consensual PvP exists because that's the game that CCP advertises, has been running for 8 years, and the game that I signed up for. Single-Shard, Player Driven-áSandbox.
