The only defense against an attack from another starship is either to evade, to make the blast miss you, or to have a so called shield. A good comparison would be with a swat team that has armor steel plates like in the medieval ages and a state of the art weapon. You may say now, "That's not ordinary armor ! It's an electronic armor based on nano technology ! ". Well, if it does not have a shield of some sort, at the molecular level at least, no alloy can survive an attack from a spaceship no matter how advanced it is. Same with the weapons ! We have no ideea with what weapons we will come up with . We have to stop being so arrogant . We think we know everything but we do not . The weapons can't be so balanced in real life as in the game, each having a specific advantage . This was designed for balance between the races. A caveman cannot have thought of a weapon such as, let's say, a nuclear bomb. There are so many things that would make any ship in the game unpractical ! By the way, who came up with the ideea of a spaceship that fires missiles ? We do not use arrows these days you know...
Acctually you are the one been arrogant here....
Because there is no way a technology could be invented that massively increases the strength of armour? Because there is no chance of using collasped matter as armour? (Would stop light-speed impacts fairly easily even with just a few mms), Because there is no way material science could advance quicker than weaponry based science?
Look at history, armour and weapons tech have always been leapfrogging each other, a prime example here:
Sword Countered by Full plate Countered by Bow Countered by Field plate (templar style) Countered by Long bow
Another more recent one:
Machine gun Countered by Tanks Countered by HEAT warheads Countered by Laminate/Chobam armour Countered by pop-up missiles and HESH warheads Countered by? :)
The current situation does not indicate the future one, you don't know if we are going to develop a super-hard armour or not within the next 20000 years!

You are right...I'm sorry I stated so sure about what the future holds, that's where i made a mistake. But from what i see, armor is the definition of a metal alloy that can stop enemy projectiles. I'm sure that in the future the word "armor" will have a slightly different meaning than it has today. But, in our current 21st century terms, it shouldn't be called armor. It should be called... i don't know... anti matter external hull that directs the energy outward if an impact with a kinetic force more than xxx occurs (that's just an example). We may argue all we want about what the scientific future holds but one thing is for sure... EVE is far from having most aspects right (any sci-fi book/movie /game for that matter).

This makes me wonder, what will counter a thermo-nuclear missile in the future? (Besides stupidly thick nuclear bunkers of course )

Edited by: mooN 4PIE on 08/08/2009 10:57:10 Yes well, you will probably be able to choose in which dimension you want to redirect the blast to. So , you'll choose a dimension where a blast could cause no harm. But I don't think they would care about other dimensions. But they should care about alternate realities as the guys in a different reality can pose a threat to every other reality. That's, of course, if the multiverse theory is correct.

well Im a bigger 2#$@% when it comes to alter space tactics though, I mean why open a portal that just sucks up a round into another sector of space when you open an exit pointing right back at them?
Or better yet open a portal that intercets thier ship midway.

Ooh, I know the guy (well one of them) that was involved with the development of that.

Collapsed matter armour would only actually need to be a few mms thick to completely stop the most powerful nuclear explosion so far today, including enough of the radiation to ensure human survival on the other side of the barrier due to it's unique properties. Of course those few mms weight tons per sf, much heaver than tank plate of the same size.
We can even produce collapsed matter today, just not in sufficient amounts to be useful, there has been research done to use it to tip the penetrators on tank shells. Unfortunately it needs particle accelerators to produce and you get stupidly tiny amounts, also you have to deal with the anti-matter and other nasties already produced to stop them blowing the collapsed matter up ;) -The sword is only as sharp as the one who wields it.
