Originally by: Iasius During my last year at high school i often skived lessons to go to the public library to read sci-fi. Never got any bother from the librarians as they thought 'ah good lad reading books'. This was better than what other kids were doing like going to the local pool\snooker club and getting busted.
Except now if you skip school for ANY reason (maybe you just wanted a day off, maybe you weren't feeling well and the health nurse can't help you because of child protection laws, so you just dont go to 5th and 6th period to go home to lay down) you can go to jail, be fined, be revoked your drivers liscense until your 18, attend a rehabilitation center for 6 months for 'delinquent minors' and go to 'Oppurtunity school' for a semester.
Pretty hefty claims there, got sources?
I'm a living source. I just came out of all this bull**** through highschool.
At least where I live, the school's budget is based upon student attendance. My schools would receive X number of dollars for every student who attended for 85% of the school year. So if a student doesn't show up to class too many times (or is too late to class too much of the time), the school's budget is reduced - which means there's less money for the superintendent's annual raise! The horrors! Somewhat disgusting if you consider the fact that many teachers were fired due to budget concerns.

My time was more in the 80's and I used to spend tons of time outside. My neighbors and I had some fields behind the house that we'd play in all the time and I remember one year we (neighbor kids n I) went all Swiss Family Robinson and took every weed in the field and turned a group of trees in the corner into one giant clubhouse with individual rooms. The weeds were used to make a roof that worked quite well.
The second field had a ditch in the middle of it that we would belly crawl through and would eventually lead us to a little junkyard that had an old school bus that we turned into a second base of operations.

just a few more remembered differences from when I was born, 1952 and now.
1) I actualy knew all the names of those in my street and spoke to them. Nowadays many dont even know the names of those next door to them. 2) The front door key was left on a string hanging inside the letterbox so you could get in when parants were at work etc. 3) If no one was at home at tea time, (this was Belfast, parants working or in the pub), the neighbours would bring you in and feed you and let you stray til someone claimed you. 4) The reference to fast food is because the OP might be british, as far as I remember, the only Fast Food was in GB mainland, Wimpeys. In Belfast only fast food was the local chippy 5) When I grew up, you went to the chippy if you couldnt afford real food. Now a days its a treat to get cod and chips here as its so expensive. 6) You were actually encouraged to speak to strangers in cars when they pulled up to ask directions. It was called being polite. Nowadays, the driver would be arrested and the parants taken to court for not teaching the kids about pervs.
I think this is called progress http://www.pixelopia.co.uk/files/signature.jpg |

If you consider North Las Vegas a Third World Country.
Wait till you get older and start doing the stupid stuff like skipping classes, not going to detention (on the rare occasions that it's given), staying out past 11 on a school night and all that good stuff. When they start threatening you with all this good stuff, come back and necro this thread and tell me your change of view please, 14 means your just starting High School. Middle School was cake compared to High School I can promise you that.
When you get caught a few times, you'l realize what I'm talking about.
@ The Lock, oh, how I envy you for getting only detention for skipping school. We do still get the phone call home thing though, and yes, it too is automated, but like Taradis said about his brother, thats the kind of crap my 'generation' (born in '86 here) had to go through.
I was not kidding about the stuff I said we dealt with in high school at least. Drivers Liscense revokation, "Oppurtunity School', Fines, Prohbation/House Arrest, Jail Time and yes even 'rehab' for delinquent minors (who are sent to Juvenile Councilors to discuss their 'problems' or whatnot).

Protip: You can doze off in class without getting caught more than just outright skipping it.
That or take a class that lets you skip class for them. ________________________________________________

Protip: No you can't, if you fall asleep you get sent up the Deans Office / Health Office (most likely the Deans Office) for insubordination.
Majority of teachers won't simply let you skip class anytime. They can face criminal action for allowing that, it's called 'contributing to the delinquency of a minor'. There are a few rare exceptions however. Mr.P in the 12th grade was one of them, he was the most awesomest teacher ever, he made American Lit fun, lol. As long as a teacher allowed me to listen to music, I'd play something mellow and loud enough to drown other people out (Cold war kids was good for this) and just stare blankly while slowly doing work. A lot better than anything else I had to deal with.
Really though, my second year of highschool and the worst thing I have ever done was nearly got in a fight with some idiot on my bus (He threw a fist and it missed and hit someone else in the face, then 3 seniors pulled him back saying "He's way bigger than you") ________________________________________________

He probably doesn't teach anymore though. Silly teachers thinking that school should be interesting and fun!
No! Us "adults" want teachers who only speak in monotone voices, have no real idea what they are talking about, and won't take time to help their students when they need help. We can't let them get to close to the students or they might molest them! Or try to sell them drugs!
MY INNOCENT CUPCAKE CHILDREN WOULD NEVER, EVER DO ANYTHING WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S EVERYONE ELSES FAULT THEY MISBEHAVE! NOT MINE OR MY CHILD'S FAULT! I'm trying to derail the thread.

I had an awesome teacher who had a "Wall of Dead things" where people can bring in pictures or objects from dead things. Someone brought a zip lock bagged filled with a cremation of one of his family members .
He also used any excuse he could to be able to play a movie and teach history (We watched Terminator, Gladiator, few other movies, lots of killing) And he would give everyone nicknames and had a game called "The Map Game", lets just say I never knew I could name off 50+ geographical locations just by pointing on a map.. ________________________________________________

Im in highschool and it isn't as harsh. You get warnings first for skipping school, it isn't untill you skip school around 5 times or so that you get in big trouble.
I had a friend who skipped a single class (One right after lunch) for a month and didn't get in trouble. ------------------------------------- My other alt is a Ferrari

Seems some countries are going faster downhill than others. At least during my high school time a few years ago, the teachers always claimed it was our own responsibility to show up and go to school. They reported absence ofc, but if we didnt show up and didnt pass in the end, that was our problem, and our future that we threw away. Imo its too many people who go to school with the attitude that they are to be teached. Not that they have to actually learn anything themselfes.

Yeah, the good old metal nuts and bolts ones, not any of this plastic health and safety **** that looks rubbish anyway.I used to spend hours and hours and hours playing with it, making cranes and all sorts of stuff at my grandads house when I was little.
It was quite funny actually, I recently bought an old 1984 suzuki dirt bike that needed a bit of work doing. Every family member past the age of 40 came flooding in with old haynes technical manuals and spanners . While my brother just took one look, and went back to playing little big planet .
Edit: Oh yeah, and the fact there is no more "sink or swim"
If you completely fail at everything in education, theres always a connections advisor with a bunch of leaflets to harass you with and tell you "maybe its just not your thing" in your nearest convient government centre.

Edited by: Corbin Zingtau on 13/08/2009 12:32:01 I was born in the eighties where as said by previous posters you could go outside and actually BE A KID! But it all changed in the ninties. Looking back on it now, it all changed after the Dunblane Massacre. Schools where overflowing with CCTV, Doors that would keep a t-rex at bay where installed everywhere..... Well that was at my school anyway, a mere 10 miles from Dunblane but still.
