Well i thought i would post this as i am going to be in the closed beta of Startrek Online. I have 3 accounts in EvE and enjoy this game but after 6 years of playing i am looking forward to somthing new with same feel.
I was hopeing that CCP would have a launch date for there "Ambulation Expantion" which would put it on the competing footing with the new title from Cryptic. But basical STO is exectly what EvE should be, True Exploration both in and out of ships!
So i would like to encorage CCP to cover more of that aspect of gameplay or many may flock to the new tittle. I know of 28 poeple in my circle looking forward to changing to STO once it comes out because of the Exploration aspect of the Game.
And that number keeps getting more and more! So could this be the the turning point of EVE ? ..ofter all i would hate to lose good friends in eve ..and would rather join them in STO ..
Please tell us when you think these features will be commited too?

Still have to see what the future holds, agreeable a new game always looks more juicy and fun to switch over to. But it takes a few months to see if they have that many expansions (and free ones at that) as eve-online.
As far as I can remember eve has changed pretty much over the course of years, it isn't the game anymore that it was when I started to play 5 years ago. We have lots of new ships, new modules, new ways to tackle solutions and recently T3, wormholes. We even had a fully graphic update. I haven't seen many games doing that.
Also I wouldn't mind if CCP takes a bit more time to bring out Ambulation, I can't wait for it to be released either, but I rather have a nice working polished ambulation then an half finished product rushed out.
I will keep an eye on most new games none the less, but at least I know what I can expect with Eve and know that my sub is being put to use to develop new content and game mechanics that are put in place. ---------------------------------- None of yet! |

And this has what to do with "Features and Ideas"?
Also it's already a big thread about STO here.

I read someone on here asserting that the WW mmo would supercede WiS. I personally would use eve as a test bed for technology pertaining to any subsequent ambulation based project, wouldn't you? I expect it to come sooner rather than later.
Re: Star Trek, unlike EVE, is limited by the franchise. It can never be anything more than a farmed cash cow. Sterile is the word.
Personally, I have no interest in Star Trek, the franchise, the setting or the strange psuedo-political characterisations and judeo christian morality that pervades the game space.
So CCP has my sub secured for the time being. At least until Braben gets his **** together and sorts out Elite 4 or I finally grow up. One of the two.

Is Startrek online completely 100% pvp orientated with extreme forms of Non-Consensual PvP? No? Then it is NOT, eve with ambulation. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

STO is closer to WoW than eve so I dont see it being a challange in any way to CCP. Infact it looks to be on track to be like 99% of other star trek games, utter crap.

The graphics for the spaceships are naff in comparison to EVE. Is this an MMO thing so students with older PC's can play it?
But it is Star Trek and i proably will try it. Romulans ftw! Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes. ~Saint |

The Star Trek universe is wonderful and rich. But I have a feeling the game is gonna suck. I have this horrible image in my head of grinding Klingons for xp and latinum.

It certainly is EVE with ambulation!
Just without non-consensual PvP, a deep economy, space conquering, meaningful risk vs reward, massive scale battles, one world "server", skill based training system, conquerable space that isn't just a glorified WoW battleground, and -most importantly- exotic dancers and XXX holoreels.

Add horrible graphics to that list. If anyone disagree with that just watch this video which tbh is worse than the EVE classic client.

I dunno, it could be good. City of Villains was a decent game but ultimately it bombed because it was too shallow - especially the PvP. Good game engine, though. COV PvE is actually very similar to EVE PvE: basically randomly generated stuff with little point to it other than personal reward.
So don't go bashing Cryptic over boring PvE when EVE's is every bit as boring.
Where EVE has a leg up is on "meaningful PvP". EVE's PvP actually isn't all that good. Gatecamps, local chat visibility, seeing probes on directional scan, etc. It's probably the least active PvP of any game out there. But it's meaningful. WOW/WAR have hyperactive PvP but it's mostly just meaningless -- nobody cares on Tuesday what you accomplished on Monday. Whereas in EVE, what you blew up on Monday can resonate for days or even years as territory gets claimed and held and people hold grudges about that battleship you blew up.
If STO can bring meaningful PvP to their game, they stand a chance at taking a bite out of EVE.
True, EVE will have the better, more in-depth endgame but I bet only 5% of people who came to EVE ever saw their own POS, Dreadnought, etc. Most never got that far, never got that big, quit before they reached that point or simply had no interest.

Edited by: Jacob Mei on 07/08/2009 15:40:07 Not even going to give this MMO the once over. Having spent several years in the Star Trek gaming community I have a pretty good picture of what to expect from both the game and the community. Considering there will likely be Role Players as well I think ill avoid the 1000 kirk vs picard debates, the 10,000 reasons why the prime directive is god, and the million or so arguements over who had the better hair do, Tasha Yar or 7of9.
Not to mention its a damned movie video game (its history is already mimmicing MXO and that just shut down earlier this month after not even five years). On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

In Star Trek they have red shirts
In Eve you are the red shirt.
NO Star trek will not be like Eve with ambulation and you will be hunted now for even mentioning it.

I heard they were going to be offering a lifetime subscription too, which really makes me think they're just after initial sales really and won't care for the game past that point.
It dosen't matter how good the game is, there's people who'll play it just because it's Star Trek and well, that's how rubbish games are made

SGW I did have some interest in until the devs game me the "you'll like it because your a fanboy" response, STO on the other hand I know what to expect and wont even bother looking. Well at least i'm not going completely mad. Good to know i was somewhat on the ball. Though i would expect a similar response from a starwars franchise. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

I imagine that you will get similar responses from STO, SW:TOR, DC comics devs. These MMOs target the fanbases love for the universe and instead of creating a good game they make a proximity that is just in working order enough to get enough of the fans on board.
SGW: already showing that they are radically departing from the established lore of the show and flaunting that people will still buy it.
STO: ST games have a history of being crap. Though there are exceptions to the rule most of the games that I played were either obsurdly easy to exploit or just didnt want to work.
DC Comics: is being developed by SOE, nuff said in that regard.
SW: TOR: Their basicly copying SWG from what ive heard. On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

If SW:TOR copies SWG I'll be happy. Very, very happy.
That's assuming they're copying Pre-cu. If not, then BioWare is a bunch of ****sticked idiots who didn't learn the mistake of others and should stick to RPG's and never touch the MMO industry again.
