I'm almost done with making a searchable, categorized database of every item(related to ships, no salvage/minerals, etc) ingame, since the tools offered online either aren't ingame browser friendly or they simply don't fulfill this need.
The main purpose for this is to make mission runners and new players jobs easier, so they know at a glance exactly where their new 'Medium Anode Particle Stream I' lies in relation to other lasers, and what size classification it is.
Is there any way to get this usable ingame, via an API or something? If not, I guess I'll just follow through with my original plan and sell it off to parties interested in it(It currently runs as a standalone), but I'd like to take a stab at helping the community first.

I thought the weapon icon and little S in a box covered the size of a weapon wuite well also the fact that it says medium in the name means its a small laser also that its rubbish, unless it says modulated or has a II on the end its pretty worthless :P

i printed me some sort of important stuff that helps me and i prolly would like this thing the OP is offering, but currently iam not missionrunning.
My minichart has soemthing like Hybrid R : proto, compressed, scout Hybrid B : modal, anode, limited (neut, ion, electron)
Projectile: scout, proto, gallium, crbide
Laser: modulated, anode, modal, afrocal
Missiles: arbalest, xr, limos, malkuth
i wish ccp would "streamline" the naming stuff so its easier to know which one is better and which one is crap compared to the other stuff :P

Its alright, but you don't see the 'tiers' of weapons unless you compare each weapon manually. And, from the mission runners I know, they spend forever sorting through what they want and what they'll reprocess. I suppose its something that takes less time with experience, but, like I said, its aimed towards new players as well.

That works for weapon systems, but then you have the various armor, hull, shield, and speed upgrades, plus ammo/crystals, etc.
Thats a big list.

How are you collating this data?
There are DB Dumps provided by CCP (Search for em) otherwise, stop reinventing the wheel and possibly entering in duff data.
When you have organized the indexing and unions correctly, you can get a lot of detail fairly easily using views.
I assume you have done all of the above, added it mostly to grab the attention of those that are technically inclined, but have never done this sort of thing before.
You then really want to ORDER each item type searched for by META LEVEL.
The higher the META LEVEL, the better.

Yes. Because "Show info" / Variations / Compare is just too hard. Please make it easier.

Well, I was mostly doing it via ingame research, and just combing through each item and recording all its stats. I didn't know about the DB Dumps, I'll search for that. I hope it doesn't turn out that I'm being redundant. EDIT - Is this what you are talking about? If so, then I'm still ok, but if not, let me know.

As for using it in game, learn how the IGB works with style sheets and drop the results in a html table, formatted in a way that the IGB understands (It isn't terribly bright compared to IE/FF/Safari/Opera).
I thought about doing it via browser, but quickly wrote it off due to the fact that I cannot have it be searchable and still show other items for quick comparison. Also, no sorting via columns.
But there isn't any way to add it to the UI? Just like a second Overview tab or something?

In-game: Show info (on item) -> Variations -> Compare Out of game: EVEMon -> Open any skill plan -> Items Browser -> Shift/Ctrl + click to select items you want to compare.
Data dump is an MSSQL export of most tables in the data base. It contains all the stats and categories of items so that we don't have to type them for these kind of tools.
And no, you can't mod the UI.

The ingame browser sucks, now the STEAM ingame browser rocks, a simple Shift+Tab press and it opens up transparently over eve, even in full screen, everything works like a normal browser plus you can open multiple windows, another shift+tab closes them all to hide them to get back to eve with no lag or anything.

Edited by: Kaydee Comcortuits on 09/08/2009 18:35:52 Well hell, I can't mod the UI? I didn't know that. I was somewhat satisfied by it until now, so I didn't look to see...
I suppose I CAN do it via ingame browser, its just that it takes forever and its clunky as hell... And that was one of the reasons I was making this tool in the first place. I'll see what the differences are in making it compatible, but if it turns out that it actually removes functionality of the tool, I'll just sell it as a standalone, I guess.
his sort of thing kind of takes the wind out of my sails. I mean, I either make it browser compatible, and it suffers the same problems(formatting, slow as a freighter) or I make it a standalone, and it loses some immediate functionality.
When you say 'the best way,' do you mean the only way to put stuff ingame?

Wouldn;t be needed if CCP didn;t make their compare tab one of the most illogical function in any game ever.
I mean honestly CCP, why did you make it horizontal but didn't add a horizontal scroll bar? How come you can't compare choice weapons instead of having to compare every weapon in specific areas.

Could you not give it a similar style/transparency to the windows ingame, and also have an "always on top" option? It won't be a ui mod, but may give the same end result.

The Item Database is a web site based on the Static Data Export Database (also known as the "DB Dump").
I would recommend that you build a web site that can be used from within the client. The current IGB is lacking in features but we have plans in that regard.

I would, but then what if you wanted to do anything where that box was? And since you can't access if from the UI, you can't move/pin/minimize it in there either
I've gotta say, I'm kind of bummed at the lack of UI moding. I haven't heard anyone say WHY though, just that there isn't the capability. Can I get a reason? I tried looking through other posts relating the the debate on API, but there were simply to many dumb posts in there, and so I figured nothing important was said about 3 pages in. Is there a devblog post about why they don't want to implement CUIs? Because hell, I'd help write the damn API if I had the tools.
