Got a corp mate having the same Issue, running ccleaner(Windows registry) didn't help, he has steam but it wasn't running at all, even in Task manager, in fact he had nothing extra running
Didn't seem to be a windows update, last update he did was 10/9/2013 weeks after the problem started
Wow(/shun) runs fine. Killed skype. No difference Closed everything extra, No difference
Had him attempt to launch eve again while the client was not responding and that weird thing happened with the launchers left side comes over and does nothing.
then got this possibly common error. http://imgur.com/Z4nQFqx
so launcher is affected to it seems.
then launcher wouldn't load for abit(Possible local computer Issue) another attempt was met with the loading character selection getting stuck, for several minutes then loading(Huh?, but also possibly a local computer Issue)
then I got a connection lost error right on the character selection screen.
and then the client said offline mode.
then we gave it a few mins, he was able to get it back online.
he was in my POS and was able to react to sma's/cha's (Pos modules) seemed to happen as soon he right clicks on space to warp somewhere. confirmed seems to happen commonly when he warps somewhere
I heard this from a different player but when your at a location in space you don't actually communicate that much with the server (if at all)?
Like when someone bookmarks a WH it doesn't show up right away unless you warp to it.
had him power off his router/modem completely, hes using At&T "Uverse" (again /shun)
seemed to work now, Ill respond back if thisbut maybe its just temporary
if a GM wants me to try anything just Private message me. Im sure my corp mate would agree to further troubleshooting |

I have been successfully logging in and staying on with perfect stability for 10 years, using ADSL with various ISPs 14 days ago I upgraded to fiber with 'EE' in the UK, (just outside London) 30Mbps Down and 10Mbps up nice and fast, but, and it is a big BUT, I am now getting 'Connection Lost' and 'Socket Closed' errors every 2-5 mins
Unplayable now.
Could it be that this is fiber related or is the consensus that this is ISP related?

In Virginia, USA and have Comcast cable internet.
Get random socket errors. I play on one PC and my son plays on another PC. Randomly sometimes far in between other times a couple times in an hour one or both PC's will get the socket closed message.
Just starting to get annoying so just starting to investigate but am thoroughly confused on what the issue could be.
Have a wired 1G connection in the house. Have a newer Motorola modem. Pay for second tier internet through Comcast. Internet never disconnects (Used to have that problem and would have to cycle the router, but I upgraded the router and the service from Comcast and that issue is gone). We also play Planetside 2 and can do that for hours with no noticeable issues with lag (I don't have lag in EVE either that I have seen but haven't played with big amounts of players yet either) and no disconnects (except when Sony's servers crash). Also never have issue streaming Pandora, Youtube or Netflix, etc...
So while I understand the ISP argument and why there could be issues, how can so many other things I do such as Planetside 2 which I feel is a great apples to apples comparison handle it while EVE can't? And does that argument then support the people on here who say it is a CCP problem |

When you call your ISP regarding connection problems, the first tier operators always tell you to reset your router/modem and then if not solved, turn it of for 5 minutes. It is a "dont bother me bottleneck" in place by the technicians. I kind triage, because doing that MAY solve or patch up a lot of connection problems they may be caused, causing or passing through from their own providers. (Customer ISP are usually the last one in a very big line of providers).
You will pass by a lot of routers if you are not in the same network as the server you are connecting, and that route of routers may vary to the point that farther countries can actually have shorter routes in some cases. That sometimes make the ping speed faster than the actual data transfer. Complex packets are divided and may be subject to more errors than simpler packets.
The third condition is multiplexing. Some ISPs asure you a speed based on the multiplexing of a slower line in parts. That is almost exclusively done by cable and telephone ISPs, and although you have 10x mbps speed, the actual speed of your line is 1x. When you are browsing, or doing anything that doesnt rely on immediate responde to commands, the 10x speed can be in place, and that is why navigation and downloads can be very fast, aswell as pings and other similar applications. When it comes to synch apps, like VoIP, Games, and etc, those connections cant enjoy the 10x speed promised, and they need to operate in the limits of the line. I had some "couple months" time in several countries due to work issues, and a lot of places in the world ISPs do that. All those doing it bring problems to VoIP and Games.
If your ISP runs protection to P2P, VoIP or similars, or even some crappier bw protections, it can make eve disconnect aswell. That is why in some cases VPN can help.
If you can use a internet connection that doesnt use multiplexing, even a much slower connection can give you a better eve experience. Neverthless, if you have a multiplexed to hell connection of 1gbps, it may have you dced as fast as any other multiplexed connection.
This is really not CCP fault regarding the connection. Other mmos solved this thing by making multiple servers for different things, including "online servers" that use non synch methods to verify if you are online and use an exclusive connection only for that. That is why some mmos have actually itens servers, market servers, world servers and so on.
You dont need to create "healms" or etc to implement multiple server connection, but if it is to end the socket screen of death problem, the only way to have it 90% solved is to implement layered connection. |

So this is happening to me too with high speed internet on a motorola modem and just monitering connection there isn't a loss of any bandwidth when the connection goes out. It's really pissing me off because I just lost my hurricane to a bunch of drones in a relic site on perfect ETHERNET connection. I'm not saying it's CCP but it sure as hell isn't me. Additionally I was playing with my brother at the same time and right then I was disconnected 3 times in a couple of minutes (I couldn't even warp out because it dropped that quickly) and he was fine. I switched to wireless to no avail. Could I at least get my ship back? -.- I wouldn't have died if I stayed on and my armor repairers/hardeners had stayed operational |

I've gotten this error about 2 or 3 times over the past few days ever since Rubicon went live. If I remember correctly I had similar issues following the deployment of Odessey so it may have to do with general instability due to new features, as well as an increase in player activity. I have a wireless connection which isn't all that good, it works 90% of the time, but more often than not being in heavily populated systems or having a lot going on will cause it to lag.
I can't help but notice that it seems things have been a bit more laggy ever since Rubicon, I'm hoping there will be some general fixes released soon that will improve performance. |

I had the same problem. I was not able to play because after some minutes of play i received the "socket was closed" error.
I tried different things. At the end i cleared all cached data in the client. And it works! No more "socket was closed" error since then.

How do you clear cached data? Is it the folder Bulkdata and its content .cache2?
I have had this problem now for about 2 weeks, happens 3-4 times an hour and it is very annoying. I play and notice nothing happens and then two windows, Socket error or socked closed. Can't remember exactly, which is funny since i see those boxes 10 times a day now.
I am on adsl using eternet cable between the router and the PC and i don't experience any hang ups in other games.
Edit: I am a miner and if i'm not mistaken i get this problem while mining, when i am inactive and don't click anything for a minute or so. Last i got disconnected and disconnected again before even warping back to where i was. I have read quite a few of the older posts here and now i'm wondering if this idle time in game makes the problem?
On top of everything, my ISP is Telia....
Edit2. The game is pretty much unplayable now, i can't even undock from port anymore. |

I never had this issue running my windows 7 laptop.
Soon as I moved to a new dell windows 8 laptop, the socket closed issue began. After fault finding I then changed my router to a Belkin, from some crap ISP one and my issue was completely solved for like a year.
Yesterday I had my internet upgraded to fibre, different router, but it worked correctly for an hour or so. Then at the same time my Windows upgraded to 8.1, now I cannot play for more then 5 mins.
I'll change my router again later but I bet that solves my problem. I believe that the EVE Connections are so delicate that any fluctuation will cause drop outs and this occurs between your computer and your router. |

I think it's windows 8.1 causing the issue or it's a combination of 8.1 and the new build. I never had any trouble with win 7 or 8 but I have since moving to 8.1. I'm having the issue myself and I can't pin point it. Thankfully it's not happening very often. |

So it's my time now.
I've got problems with socket closed error since begining of december. Earlier this happened to me one or two times, when internet went offline or something happened with router. Then it started to getting errors more often, at 25 I wasn't able to play because of errors. (I know about DDoS - silvester wasn't the best day) Yesterday my ISP got problems with internet, but at evening it was OK. Now I am getting almost instantly disconnected from game. My game see red cross or another player - bam, you've got socket closed!
I know I've connected with Support, but as I said they've repaired everything here, in our server. I'm getting problems only with EVE. I've played WoT, downloaded 6 Gb stuff, and in the same time played music on youtube, and there wasn't even smallest lag. I am using laptop with Win8, and receiving internet via wi-fi. Signal strength is always at lvl5 (highest possible). |

I have tried everything I could think of. modem reset, router reset, pings, tracert, contact ISP, etc etc...
Windows 8.1 Windows 7 Windows XP Pro Windows Vista (yes we have several computers in the house with different OS) ISP: Comcast
I have no problem connecting to internet or even playing games or using applications on the internet while socket lost connection with EVE. I have monitored this event over the last 3 weeks. This happened to me in last 3 weeks alone.
I have even contacted ISP (comcast) to look into this matter, however they are only responsible to make sure the customers have access to the internet , nothing beyond that. They did send this issue to the techs but they can't do anything about it. The only way anyone can look into it is for CCP to investigate this matter. This issue is between CCP and ISP
This issue happens to me every Friday night 10:30pm PST and sometimes Saturday as well.

Copy-and-paste from another post, as I figure all this info should be in an easy to find place:
Tau Cabalander wrote:As far as I know, socket close is the result of missing 5 packets. The socket is closed to prevent a large client desync. Basically it is a networking issue. The problem can be anywhere between your computer and CCP's servers. Example: I recently had this issue after changing my network topology, and discovered that my Netgear WNDR4500 wireless router is known to drop packets randomly on any traffic through the WAN port, and there is some evidence it will do the same on any traffic on its built-in 5-port Ethernet switch. Some people have reported downgrading the firmware to 1.0.1_20 helps, but it hasn't solved the problem for everyone (there are at least two versions of the hardware, WNDR4500 and WNDR4500v2, so that may be the difference). My solution: bypass the router and use a 75 foot CAT-6 cable to the VDSL modem. |

Happens to me today twice. 13:20 + 13:25 EVE time. OS: Wind8.1 ISP: Telecolumbus (GER) Solution attemps: restarting pc, router, modem.
Happens while mining on 3x Clients the same time in one belt. There is also a possibility that shared IP`s from my ISP may be the reason. I'm living in a big city - so there is a quiet high possibility that others, dedicated to the same shared IP by my ISP, may end up using the same sockets and cause a collusion and the packet lose.
Possible fix? Create two sockets at once and use it, while the other socket get "refreshed". But I don't belive this would be the final solution at all - just a small workaround. Another con - quiet big network overhead... |

I live in China. Without VPN I get "Socket Closed" errors every 10 minutes or worst.
I guess the VPN encryption process helps on keeping a steady / error-safe communication with CCP servers. |

This is obviously a shortcoming of the game, whatever protocols and connection fail-safes are in place are inadequate and obviously need to be re-written to account for this issue, if that means changing the basic communication protocol the servers use, SO BE IT!
FIGURE OUT what can be done within the game to fix this!
It's ridiculous that this issue has been going on since 2012 and the dev team continues to fail the community. I've had the closed connection error the last few days when starting up and now I've been dumped out 3 times in a row. I'm a newbie, this kind of absolute failure on the part of the devs is what completely turns me off to any game.
And yes, I paid to be able to play- it is extremely disappointing, no matter how often it happens these days, to pay for a product and find out it's STILL IN BETA even after many years of operation. |
