When searching for an item in contracts, I'd assume that the items shown with "Entire Region" are a subset of items shown in "All Regions" (just by the logic of it).
Yet this is not the case, I frequently find items in Entire Region which are not displayed when I search All Regions. Also, the amount of items displayed seems to be roughly the same.
Going further, one might assume the same relation for Current System vs Entire Region and Current Station vs Current System.
My question is: Is this behavior documented somewhere? Can I somehow deduct, which subset of items is being displayed in All Regions (or the higher level categories).
One might even ask oneself, whether "Current station" displays all available contracts of an item.
As it stands, the search does not what it looks to be designed to do and therefore is only of limited usefulness, if any. Whether I find a certain contract for an item I am looking for or whether other people find mine is dependent on what exactly? Any ideas/experiences?

Short answer: You only ever get 1 page of results.

Well, thanks, I noticed, but are the results chosen randomly or which secret formula is being used?

Long answer: The primary sort result is age of contract. You only get the newest contracts on the page. Therefore, searching a narrower spectrum gives you, potentially, a better set of contracts. So searching all regions for all contracts for a given item is going to give you the results from a much shorter timeframe than searching a single region for all contracts or searching all regions for item exchanges. This is the effect that you are seeing.

That's kind of odd, because for example if I search for "Stabber Fleet Issue" it never shows all the contracts for them. I actually get more results for them by just using the cruiser option with out narrowing it down.

I'm afraid you're goofing up one thing.
The only reason I know this is because I too failed until brought to my senses by a corpie.
If you look, there's TWO separate places where you can enter what your are searching for. One searches the exact item, while the other searches the descriptions or something like that (I'm not in game to check) I actually went so far as to petition this "bug"... until my corpie suggested I try entering my search in the "exact" one.
Voila problem solved

Edited by: Jessica Bains on 18/08/2009 23:16:18 You're right, I completely forgot the "view more" thing, actually knew it was there. My point stands though. I used simple view, sorted by price and items that showed in "Entire Region" did not show up in "All Regions", which they logically should (which is easy to see, when you sort by price or by who issued the contract).

Don't forget about the other part.... there's more than one way to search for the same item and the results you get are different depending on which you use. Descriptions will not pull up all of the exact searches, and will also pull up a lot of other stuff.

Like really really cheap Caldari Navy Ravens that need a quick sale! :) Exact search is your friend every time tbh.

I was only ever referring to exact search.

With contracts, it is impossible to sort all contracts listed if there is multiple pages. You only sort one page at a time with pages arranged by contract age. So, if you are sorting by price, contracts that are older, but cheaper on a second page will not show up in the sort results for the first page.

Thanks for the clarification! Great design...NOT!
So are ALL contracts relevant to a given search actually at least shown in an "All Regions" search? Anyone knows?
Although given, you can't sort them properly, it doesn't matter that much :/

The contract search mechanism is horrible, but it works 100% if you use it the way it wants to work NOT the way you think it should work.
First, never search by description. You want the next field to the right for an exact match.
If you want to browse, do it by selecting categories from the drop-downs.
If the advanced search is expanded, the "next page" button is often obscured. You can collapse the advanced search before executing the search.
I used to think it was broken too, but I just had to learn how it wants to work.

Thanks, unfortunately I am doing all of the above already.
My usual scenario is:
Want to look for the cheapest price for an item I want to buy all over EVE. Use exact search and item exchange. Sort by price.
Apart from the problem already established (sorting only one page at a time), first thing I get is all the WTB contracts, there should be an option to separate WTS/WTB, and then all of the above still applies...browsing is fine, but efficiently finding current going rate for an item, either to buy it yourself or to price your own items you want to offer for sale is, well just broken, if you ask me...
Or did I miss anything?
