I don't know about you guys, but there's a quite a bit of stuff in some of my hangars. And even if you don't have alot of stuff, I think it'd still be alot easier to sort it if we had something like corp hangars have with the tabs.
Yes, I know you can just buy containers and stick everything in there; but then if I want to check where I have that giant stack of tritanium, I cant, because all I see is the can.
So how about tabbed hangars? (On the assets listing it doesn't have to show the categories, simply for when docked)

Tried to get this years ago, they have some reason why it's too much trouble...

Hey, Runescape did it, and if CCP is anything like (or better than) Jagex then they could probably do it too. I agree that one big panel is a bit cluttered.

something as simple as being able to open the containers from the assets tab to see what i have inside would actually be enough to make me happy xD; im quite content with sorting the hangar with cans, as long as i can still view what i have and where

view and remotely search them via asset window. That would be awesome.
Another idea would be an additional hangar view that looks like the market tree. You simply click on the group and see all the items of that group you own... ---------------------------------------------- The glass is neither half full nor half empty. It's just twice as big as it need to be... |

They already do it for the corp hangers, it should be easy to do it for individual hangers as well.

Especially huge amounts of stuff that make you want tabs generate a huge load on the database for example when searching in assets. If you have most of it in containers its much less stress for the poor database.
Mind you Eve has often about 40k players online all accessing the same database. I bet that's the point why they refuse to make cluttering your hangars with tons of items too easy.
Considering the amount of items I got stockpiled around the universe I guess searching the assets would take several minutes if there wasn't most of it in containers.
With time you get a feeling which items you need to know about their amounts remotely and start having them at the hangar. Stockpiled stuff like ship modules which are many different stacks I likely only need if being at that station fitting a ship anyway so they're in containers. I can also easily tell which market orders ran out by spotting stacks of items in hangars that aren't supposed to be there.
