Edited by: Sable Blitzmann on 21/08/2009 06:35:29 ... but I honestly don't know where to go. I know there is a backstory page full of chronicles. But it's huge, and I don't know where to start.
I'd like to read about the interesting backstory, everything from the time the EVE Gate opened to current affairs, and every war in between. Where should I start?
Also, if I understand correctly, the chronicles are just short stories, correct? So they aren't really the backstory? I also read somewhere that they are currently being rewritten to fill in plot holes and the like...

If you're looking for an EVE history book, you won't find one. The closest thing would be these:
The Setting Timeline Year 105 Overview Year 106 Overview Year 107 Overview Year 108 Overview Year 109 Overview Year 110 Overview Year 111 Overview
Beyond this, you will have to make your own conclusions from reading the stuff in the Backstory section.

Unless you're a trekkie level nerd, I wouldn't worry about the plot holes. They only become apparent to the most Asperger's-ridden of readers. Read everything - it's really quite good. |

So start with those, and then jyst read the chronicles randomly?
CCP has apparently done a very poor job with organizing their lore. =/
Maybe I should wait for this. Seems to be a very good compilation. =D

Sigh... The chronicles are listed chronologically by date of posting. From a background point-of-view it doesn't matter what order you read them in.
Consider them a gallery of art representing the EVE universe. To order them in any specific way would ruin a lot of what they are - if it could even be done. -----

That is indeed the intended purpose of the book; if it succeeds at that is a different question, of course :P. I'm currently in contact with CCP Ginger and waiting for feedback on the idea itself and the current version of the book as well as CCP's view on the hole issue in general: They're apparently also themselves working on the background story so that might be in conflict with another "release" of any kind... we'll see.

Since I personally had the same trouble as the OP and am trying to address the issue somewhat I obviously disagree. When you're new to the game and want to start to orientate yourself then it does matter a lot. You don't want to "waste" time reading about what might be considered local colour (e.g. Quafe -- yeah, it's a interstellar company but in respect to the lore it's just a minor detail); neither do you want to start reading a story that assumes you're already familiar with the basic situation and all the terms... So what do you do? Pick chronicles at random to minimize frustration "on average" and keep a list of what you've already read?

Unless you're studying the writing style or the biography of the author then reordering doesn't ruin anything but might help introduce the work. Just like a gallery, to stay with your analogy, will have the works presented in a way they or the artist deem right, rather than in a chronological order of painting. Now, CCP might very well agree with you and believe that the apparent chaos is a mirror for the game and thus by design. ::shrugs:: Anyhow, you're right in that you can't reorder all of the texts in a meaningful way but I believe it's very well possible to hand someone a leitmotif to get them started.

I personally enjoyed reading the scientific Articles and the short stories the most. You dont need to read the Chronicles but they are still a good read. Read up about the races as well.
Ruthless, Theodicy, Jovian Wetgrave, Forsaken Ruins are awesome Short Stories. The others are good too. But the above i would recommend Join the brown Coats today!!! |
