I was just sitting at a gatecamp watching covert ops frigates sneak by, and wishing there was something I could do about it. We had a fast ship in the gang, but there was no way I could point (with my finger) to the screen and say "he went thataway".
So I was thinking that what might be neat is a turret that lets us fire a kind of scatter-shot into space without a target lock, using the player-controlled camera to aim. So next time I see a covert ops near a gate, I can point my camera and press the button to fire into the area. One shot wouldn't kill a covert ops, but if you have several battleships firing and 3 or 4 of them get hits, that might be enough.
The power of this weapon would be balanced by its danger. First, you run the risk of killing your own fleet's drones and frigates if you fire too much. Second, like a smartbomb, the shotgun would be insanely dangerous to fire in highsec because you never know what it might hit.

I proposed an idea years ago for a burst fire/shotgun type weapon for large turrets as a counter for frigates on battleships. I had hoped that's what this would be. But no, its just another whine about stealth. Nevermind. ------------------------------------------------ Suicide drones?

I propose the shotgun not because it's necessary for balance or something, but because I think it would be fun. Nothing else in the game makes use of the player-controlled camera for aiming (except the directional scanner) and it would be a neat new way of playing the game if you could swivel your camera and hit an F-key to fire into space. It'd be a new tactic with its own strengths and drawbacks.

dont come requesting balance to something like that, its not like the covops are gonna pwn you.. your talking about, i wanna crust that bug but came mechanism protects it! i want some balance!

"Fun" for you and game balance are unfortunatelly not always compatible. (Other than that I guess introducing FPS elements to EVE are simply impossible)
I, for my part, would have fun flying around in a ship capable of one-shooting caps. Won't happen, unfortunatelly.

problem with that is that you then have a gun with no tracking.
tracking wasnt in the game originally, it was added to stop battleships from raping every other ship in the game.
if we use OP's idea, the guns will track as fast as you can spin the screen, which is silly and unbalanced. ------ I, for one, welcome our new console overlords! |

maybe we can add like a red dot on the cam, that would turn as fast as the turret could turn towards to cursor, so it would kinda lag behind the camera's movement if you moved it to fast
