Hypothetically if someone had just found that his disposable income was about to increase quite a bit, and that his favourite PC game was about to add a console-based component, which console should he get?

I got a PS2 just so i could play Gran Turismo. Likewise i also would get a PS3 just so i could play the latest iteration of PS3. Also PS3 has a blueray player which i don't have yet though i need to find a way to plug the HDMI connection into my high def PC monitor that only has DVI and VGA connections. But i think i can do it.
Also you can get a special mouse and controller for the PS3. Costs about ú55. I would get one to play Dust514 with.

Not the Wii, because it's nowhere near capable of running that game. Not the 360, because it has a phenomenally high hardware failure rate.
So, the logical conclusion ? Upgrade your PC

PS3 if you are inclined toward eastern RPGs. XBOX360 otherwise. Wii, I don't know. If you like to exercise during gameplay, why not.
I owned an XBOX360 for nearly a year. Had many games, but most of them were mindless shooters/fighters/etc. I bought it to play Force Unleashed, Fallout 3 and Mass Effect.
IMHO those are the only games that worth your while. That is, if you are a traditional PC player. Ofc if you like fighter/car games then consoles are for you.
PS3 could be cool. Don't know much about it.
Well, you can download a lot of games for the Box. Ofc you shouldn't. But you could. In theory, that is.

Xbox 360
Wii's games are limited and more family oriented with mostly in house titles.
PS3 is losing a lot of their old exclusive titles, Ace Combat, Final Fantasy and now Metal Gear to the 360.
Despite the failure rate, the 360 is still a better choice. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

If Sony sold a PCI-E card with the PS/3 CPU on it, I'd buy that in a heartbeat. Dunno why they dont really, since it would be much cheaper for them to make.
But yeah, I'm kind of inclining to the PS/3 atm, if only because the new slimline thingy is due for release, so I can pick up the old style for cheap.

Ps3 simply because its faar closer to a usable pc than the 360. If you are feeling brave you can stick an nlite xp install on it to make it a real pc though pc games probably won't run very well.

The Wii is the 'fun' console of the bunch. Most games are generally more casual and involve the motion sensor in some for or other. The graphics are last-gen but you can also play Gamecube games on it which is a nice bonus. The Wii is also hackable, tho I've heard the process changed with a recent hardware update...not sure exactly how.
PS2 is still available and has a huge back catalogue of games. I believe it's alsso backwards compatible with PSX games if you harbour any fond memories of games from yesteryear. It has a lot of good titles, particularly of the party variety (singstar, other rhythm games, etc). I believe the PS2 is hackable, but with great difficulty.
PS3 is very expensive but (arguably) justifies it with a reportedly decent blu-ray player, for high-def films. GT5 looks good but beyond that I know little of it. The few exclusives to date have been a bit of a letdown->above average. Not hackable.
360 has a lot of games, many very good ones. The Elite gives HDMI for high-def gaming and XBoxLive is one of the best online services out there, tho there's an approx ú3/$5 charge/month. You can buy stuff on there without a sub tho, like DLCs for games, Arcade and XBox original titles, movies and more. The newer hardware doesn't suffer from the design fault in the first couple of generations which caused a lot of red rings, so if you're buying one new, you can ignore the scaremongers. I have one and love it. It works well with Win Media Centre and is also hackable, relatively easily (no need for any soldering or modchips).
I would have a look at the games available for any particular console, on the web or in a store before you buy. Do you want the blu-ray functionality? Do you want to hack it? I don't think you'd be disappointed with a PS3 or a 360. I would personally recommend the 360 because there are many brilliant games available, XBox Live is a nice service and it's easy to mod. I just wish I had a high-def TV to play on -------------

So it's PS3 or 360 Elite really. Have a look at the games available and upcoming releases and that should give an indication which you'll enjoy more. I'm very happy with my Elite, more so since MS let you install games to the hard drive (finally a use for the 120GB!) making them load much faster and cutting out the noise of the disc spinning (disc still needs to be in drive to boot the game, but isn't used beyond that). -------------

This. I had an original 360 and the chainsaw disk drive drove me nuts (Aswell as cost me a few games when the table it was on was knocked by accident)
I got an Elite on a good deal (Traded in my original with its 20gig hdd i think it was, + 50 quid and in return got an Elite 120gb + three free games.)
I aint complaining. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

As an owner of both PS3 and 360 Elite, I can confirm that the 360E is by far the most used by anyone in my house. It has the PS3 beat in games, and the graphic differences are literally non-existent.
Plus you get a nice 120GB HD, and HDMI support.
Another plus is that if you have Windows Media Center on ANY of your machines, you can link it to your Xbox 360 to run films and **** over the wireless connection (or wired if you have one). I frequently download episodes and watch them over the 360 (plus, you can plugin an iPod or like and listen to music incredibly easily whilst playing games or other).
It's just the best console for everyday use. ---

Just had a conversation about the PS3 slim before on another forum.
One guy: "Still little miffed that they have very low backwards compatability rate"
Second guy: "Because people buy PS3 to play PS2 Games"
Me: "Because I'd buy a PS3 to play PS3 games..."

I've got mine configured and all, but haven't used it properly yet. My main thing would be...can it play divx/xvid, or just WMV and MPG? Most stuffs I've downloaded tends to be xvid for the most part, with either mp3 or AC3 sound. I still have my original xbox with xbmc on there which works great so it's not a massive deal if 360 can't play them, just curious what formats yours handles. -------------

I have played xvid/divx files, and i THINK there might be a way for it to play MKV files too. (At least i read a link about a link about a link explaining how it could be done but i never actually clicked the links) _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

I would get a PS3
The wii is crap, the controller/s are horrible, graphics are so 90's and games are **** poor.
360 is a complete cash sink, the DVD drive is loud - granted these days you can install on hdd but that will soon be used up if you have a good collection of games, hardware failure, no built in wifi and ú50 for a g wireless adapter, no web browser.
I'm tempted to trade in my 360 for a ps3 atm, mainly because of the blueray, better gfx, built in wifi, it has a web browser and can stream video, hdd can be upgraded easily and to a decent size.

Edited by: SirSpectre on 26/08/2009 07:06:35 Simple answer: Buy both. Great games for both consoles, and now they are the same price \o/ (barring the xbox360 arcade which is dumb and doesnt have a HDD)
Edit: buy a PS3 first. After all the features you'll get on the 360 (wireless ect..) its more than the PS3. AND the ps3 has better media format compatibility than the 360. ----

Xbox, then I can add you to my friends list. <(^_^<) :3!!1
In all seriousness prolly still the 360, despite the acclaimed 'massive failure rate' i've never had a problem, and only one of my friends (out of the 14 of us that own 360s) have had a problem, which was the red ring, sent off the Microsoft, got it back sharpish, no cost, no issue.
It also has the most titles out of all the console, won't cost you an arm and a leg like the Ps3, which has very, very few games worth mentioning I think. Also the Live service, whilst being ú30 a year which is bugger all IMO, is very good, with only a few downtimes per year. I think we've had two this year, can't fault that.

I have all 3 (lucky me)
The Wii is just crazy mad fun time but its lacking in games and I dont see dust working with all the arm flailing.
The PS3 is big, black, costly, looks like a george foreman grill and has nothing of interest out for it. Also you cant get a damn recharge cable with seperate controlers for some odd reason.
x-box 360 has the most games, the best internet system and the new models dont have the red ring problem and are quiet.
All together I say the 360 is best.

dunno about PS3, just because I don't own it, but I'm quite happy with my x360 elite version. I believe this hardware failure thing was ironed out long ago, so if you buy now, xbox is pretty stable. haven't had a problem yet (1,5years in use), isn't loud either
games are ok (altough mostly I still prefer PC), but it's good on parties (heroes and rockbands etc) and it doubles as a dvd player/multimedia station for TV (connectivity with PC, 10 points!)
but can't really tell you whitch console is better. you have to gab one and go with it :)

You don't have to do that with the 360 either. You only need to pay for Live Gold if you want to play multiplayer thru Live. You can use messaging, Live Marketplace and the films service without any subscription.
Regarding failure rate, this page details the hardware revisions of the console. It was the initial console (Xenon - May 2005-May/July 2007) that suffered from the solder defect that resulted in RROD if the console got too hot, repeatedly. Hardware after July-Aug 2007 didn't have the fault. I don't doubt there were some hardware failures among those, but it would be the same as any other consumer electronic kit. Mine would either be a Zephyr or a Falcon (is there a Caldari ship called a Zephyr BTW?), no issues with it. With the increasingly smaller manufacturing processes, and the better heat management since 2007 the platform is as reliable as any other. -------------

Not quite the same thing though. It will be an MMO for consoles, not a normal game with an online multiplayer aspect. It will almost certainly have a monthly subscription of its own, just like Eve itself, whatever plaform its played on. This payment is not the same thing as XBox Live Gold. Whether you need Gold or not is a different question, only CCP can know that. -------------

I highly recommend this avenue. Considering you have no interest in console games I would definately wait to find out which console will run Dust the best. No need to rush on this one. Hell by the time it comes out both of them will probably be very affordable in their relic forms
