I have this problem. I started putting on weight a couple of years ago, but that was to be expected since I ate Macdonalds every day & did very little excercise. Earlier this year I transferred to another site within my company & lost quite a lot of weight due to the sheer ammount of walking I have to do.
Then comes Easter. Naturally I ate a whole lot of chocolate & my gut ballooned. I thought the problem would go away just as it had before, but the weight keeps piling on & I can no longer see my willy when I look down. I feel that only the infinite wisdom of EVE-O posters can help me with this. |

I suggest having a friend walk with you, possibly toting a cane pole with a quarter pounder with cheese tied to a string so you have a goal to work towards. You know what an answer is? Simple physical exercise : turn head left, turn head right, repeat several times while keeping your mouth tightly shut any time anybody offers you food, tries to sell you food, or you see food you might want to get because it TASTES good. As long as you stay away from refined sugars, fried stuff and other things full of grease, and don't stuff your face full of everything else all the time, you'll be fine.
Pretty freaking simple, but also extremely difficult.
You might consider developing a nicotine addiction to decrease your appetite. I would recommend nicotine in propylene glycol inhaled from electronic vaporizers to both minimize costs and minimize the detrimental health effects associated with the more "traditional" method of nicotine consumption. Bonus points - sugary stuff reduces the taste-wise enjoyment of nicotine-in-PG vaporizing, so that's an added incentive to not partake in sweets. Extra bonus points - nicotine can reduce symptoms of ADHD, OCD, anxiety, depression and a host of other issues, and it promotes formation of new blood vessels making healing faster.

Vigorous Daily ************. Several times a day you can take a five minute break and complete this action. As you are facing a toilet go into a squat position like you are sitting on the can (only you are still facing it). Keep the upper body upright and rigid. Remain in this position for the full 5 minutes while you perform the motion at a moderate pace. This will increase your heart rate, burn calories, and work out those calf, thigh, and stomach muscles. I have been an avid smoker for the last 14 years & it does very little to curb my apetite. I have considered trying out the e-cigs, but became afraid of placing one of these anywhere near my face, as a poor Canadian fellow had one explode in his face last year which resulted in his jaw falling off. Do activities that get your heart racing a bit and continue the activity in a manner that maintains that level of stress. Too low and the benefits are meager(still better than not doing anything), too high and you risk damage to yourself with no real additional benefits. Since you want to burn fat, you need to keep it up for some time before your body really starts to burn body fat instead of mostly carbs. The exact activity is pretty much irrelevant. It just has to be something that gets your pulse up and you can maintain it for long enough on a regular basis. Think swimming, light jogging, actively pedaling while cycling or doing series of moves with your body in rapid succession while watching TV(example). Do what you find convenient and try to alternate the activities, so your body has time to recover.
Just as importantly you need to watch what you eat and how you eat. Try to keep your alchol and soda drinking in control and reduce the amount of sugars you consume as much as possible. If you're hungry, don't eat sugary snacks. Eat proper food. Try eating smaller food portions at regular intervals and only eat your hunger away. Generally don't eat until you're full. If you become hungry again later, eat again a portion of proper food. Also keep eating a healthy variety of things, that you actually like to eat. If you have to force yourself eating things you dislike on a regular basis, no matter how you force it, you'll quickly find excuses to deviate from you diet. Lastly, it's ok to deviate from the plan at times. The goal is to make such occations the exception instead of a frequent occurance. |

Also, you hold the damn thing in your hands (not like you could keep them in your mouth hands-free, even the lightest versions are still noticeably heavier than a cigarette) so you should be able to feel a FAULTY battery overheating quite a while before it actually explodes. I'd have to partially agree with this. Simply eating less is not a good solution in this case, it's eating differently also.
If you want my guide to lose weight when you're living an unhealthy lifestyle, try the following.
Step 1) Swear off all soft drinks, milk shakes, or any other sugary/sweet/fatty drink when it's offered to you. Water, unsweet tea, non-sweetened juices are your friend. Trust me, this works for EVERYONE and it does WONDERS for losing weight, could cause you to lose 15 pounds from this alone if you stick to it.
Step 2) Watch what you eat. Swear off McDonalds, Burger King, all that fast food junk. Go to a sit down restaurant and ask for a meal with a decent amount of vegetables or fruit (preferably without added sugar), and stay away from fatty foods with lots of oil, fatty meats, or anything like that added to it. Most pasta and white bread is off the list also.
Step 3) Exercise. Do it in your daily life. Walk instead of taking your car. Also try joining a gym and stick with it. Learning how to lift weights properly and doing that on a regular basis will cause fat to shed off of you like nothing else, and is actually much better for burning fat than most aerobic exercises such as running.
Yes, I know these things are absolutely miserable at first. Yes, I know it's really hard to kick bad habits. But trust me, if you're able to do the things I listed above and stick with it, the gains will outweigh anything you've lost by so much that you'll forget it eventually. |

Back on the main issue of the thread, I know firsthand how simple yet difficult it is to lose weight, and how easy it is to put it back on.
Here's a quick recipe to getting fat : eat everything that tastes good, especially the most tasty things full of fats and sugars, eat fast and until you can't stuff your face anymore, drink as much alcohol as you can, and avoid any form of physical activity as much as possible. Gain 40 pounds in a single month and keep them too ? You bet you can do it, it's easy and fun too ! I did it twice, even ! Oh, and if possible, keep a strict diet JUST BEFORE you start doing all of that, it makes it so much easier.
Quick recipe for losing fat : the exact opposite of the above, especially if you take great care NOT to starve yourself, to avoid the yo-yo effect. Takes a whole lot longer though. 60 pounds, about a year, give or take. First 10-20 pounds, that goes down relatively easy, in a couple of months, but after that, ouch. http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/User:Akita_T http://eve-search.com/stats/Akita_T T2 BPO poll : https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=114789 |

Get a recumbent exercise bike. Link this to a simple switch (I have no idea how this would be done of course but it can't be that hard or an electrician) such that while you cycle your monitor will remain on, and then play EVE, or indulge your favorite computer obsession of the day which considering your earlier admission is unlikely to put you at too much risk.
hint: The thing about exercise is that it needn't be vigorous if all you want is to burn fat, you just have to do it regularly for a while. You should be able to carry on a conversation at the same time.

At the usual high 36mg/ml nicotine concentration of flavourless e-liquids, a milliliter of the stuff (about 40 drops, give or take) taken in a single dose (halflife is about 2h) has a decent chance to harm a non-smoker, and a full bottle (usually 30ml) will almost certainly kill just about anybody stupid enough to drink it all in a gulp (in spite of the strong bitter taste).

Eat right everyday and the problem will fix itself. This involves a change of habit and committing to it. It takes a great amount of willpower, self-education (on proper nutrition) and the right frame of mind (i.e. NOT holding onto current dogmas on how people get fat). On the plus side, you don't even need to exercise beyond the simple walks and daily chores.
5+ years back I was averaging 100-120kg (for a 6' 2), overweight but not grossly. Now a clean 70-80kg avg (been almost 2 years). Never going back to the old weight again, that's for sure. |

Ask your doctor if amputation is right for you. Quick weight loss guaranteed ! Another alternative would be to get in jail. I hear they have great incentives for keeping fit. Do you believe everything that your doctor says? ... Really? Why get in jail when you can do something more constructive, like volunteer as public works janitor or farm hand (read pay). Why would you want to get stranded on an island with zero knowledge on how to survive? Want to see if you can be Tom Hanks (in Cast Away)? No need to feed the fish in the ocean. They've got plenty to eat.

I think I've done pretty well tonight. Before I started work, I bought a large bacon & cheese zinger meal from KFC, but I haven't opened the pepsi yet as I've been drinking coffee & water most of the night. I am however feeling really hungry at the moment & the only place I can get food that's close by (can't go too far away from the work site) is macdonalds.
I'm running through my options here, but I can't make an informed decision when I'm so hungry. Double quarter pounder with cheese, salad & water or crispy chicken deluxe & 20 nuggets?
EDIT: I did end up going to macdonalds, but being a sunday morning there was drunk idiots everywhere & I didn't want to stand with a bunch of people that couldn't form actual lines. I did observe them for awhile though & saw several scuffles occur due to said lack of queues. I think I will have to remain hungry until I get home, but by then I'll be too tired to make anything decent. |

It might depend on where you go... Depending where you purchase it from (plenty of online resources in just about any country) and in what sized bottle, no-aroma e-liquid mixing base (preferably PG, or PG+VG mix) with 36 mg nicotine per milliliter (that's the nicotine equivalent of roughly 2 packs of cigarettes per milliliter) costs anywhere from 4 to 80 cents per milliliter. You can even find liquids with higher nicotine content. And if you do not care about vaping it, VG liquid is usually even cheaper than PG liquid. And yes, you can actually get 6-10 cents per milliliter deals in the USA too if you get the larger bottles (300ml or larger on e-cig.com, for instance). That's 2 cents for the equivalent nicotine in a whole cigarettes pack, or quite enough for one day's use. Or, you know, single purchase, 20$ for one year's worth of e-liquid base (which you can mix with any flavour you want, if you decide to start vaping it instead of drinking it), but I think the shipping&handling costs are actually higher than the cost of the product itself. http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/User:Akita_T http://eve-search.com/stats/Akita_T T2 BPO poll : https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=114789 |

My method? Just reduce carbs, have a salad for lunch, reduce dinner and try to eat it early. Walk 2-3 miles a day.

Honestly, the biggest key to losing weight is training yourself to eat less. If you're eating a what I'd call a standard diet, you usually take in a lot more than you need. To start with, never take more than a plate full of food, don't go back for seconds, and then pare it down from there. Then start eating salad once in a while, going for less processed foods, and so on. You'll find that your body gets used to taking less in, and your tastebuds change, though it takes a few months.
And immediately getting rid of any kind of sugary beverage is the first thing you need to do. Drink water, tea, or coffee (preferably without anything added, but you can work up to that). Tea especially doesn't really add many calories to your diet, and helps in a whole host of ways. It also reduces your appetite. It's also great. I should probably note that coffee can help with weight loss due to its effects on your metabolism -- unless you eat more when you're nervous (and too much of it can cause nervousness, amount depending on person).
And once you do all this - or before, if you're feeling adventurous - add in some basic exercise to your routine, then work up gradually -- and make it intermittent high-heart-rate if you want to lose weight. Don't run the exact same route at the same time every day. If you vary it, your body doesn't raise your metabolism to intake more calories... which we don't want. Once you're slim, working out a better exercise routine to stay fit is good, yes, but if you want to lose quickly, you need to trick your body a bit. (Or so I've heard and have no reason to doubt).
I think that's the basic basics. Just don't do anything you'll regret. Like, um, get addicted to something or take drugs.
And there's another tip: Stay away from condiments and sauces. Dressings for salads, ketchup, etc... these add a lot of unneeded calories to your diet. If you put them on salad, it makes the healthy eating so much less healthy.
Generally, don't rely on restaurants for food. Buy your own, pack a sandwich or a salad, or whatever else you find works. And yeah, it's hard. But it's ultimately worth it. In this day and age, one of the few things you can really take control of is your health. And if you manage to do all the above, you'll find it's pretty transformational for your character as well. Sticking with it builds mental muscles too.
Oh, and the major things to realize are that it's not going to happen instantly, every day is just another day, and everyone slips up. Just don't let one slip up to make a day "lost" so you slip up for the rest of the day. You can definitely eat junk every so often (depending on the person), or even make a unhealthy choice here or there - like eating everything your hypothetically Italian mother-in-law tries to force down your throat - but don't throw yourself down the slippery slope. Staying positive is key.
Hopefully my rambling was of some assistance. It might seem like a lot, but the major thing is to ease into it and adapt. That obviously takes some patience. Grandpa Bill: "I remember my uncle Joe who used to go mining, back then it was easy to get black lung, but we called it coughing lung because we really didnt care what color it was, the coughing seemed like it should be in the title since he did so much of it." |

Aah yes, the Don't-Eat-So-Much diet.
Just remember that "diets" don't work, you have to permanently change your habits or you're just going to get fat again.
Also drink water before eating, it makes you feel full and you don't eat so much. Also water helps take the edge off hunger pangs and remember the more you eat usually the harder this will be |

Yeah, exactly. You pick tricks up if you keep at it. More to the point, if I didn't make it clear in my above great wall of text (which is far more than just likely), I'll agree with the above: It's not a diet, and diets don't work. It's changing your lifestyle and even your psychology and physiology to ones that work better for you. If you want to keep weight off forever, you'll need to be healthy forever, basically. Grandpa Bill: "I remember my uncle Joe who used to go mining, back then it was easy to get black lung, but we called it coughing lung because we really didnt care what color it was, the coughing seemed like it should be in the title since he did so much of it." |
