The first MMO's of the internet. I'm sure alot of EVE devs have played on MUDs before or some MU*. It is now a game community mostly forgotten today. So in the spirit of EvE a great MMO I thought I'd share the MMO's of the past.

I still play RetroMUD, Myconoid Bard!
The Iron Realms MUDs seem pretty well done and maintained too.

Both great MUDs. I do believe Iron Realm MUDs tend to be pay to play I do know they are maintained by a company that profits in some fashion. Most MUDs today are nonprofit due to the codebases they use to run and operate [Open Source]

Does no one play MUDs anymore!? Some of you other players must have had a favorite MUD from back in the day.

I've played on Lost Wishes, but I've yet to visit it in a while.
Good people there though. On another topic, I finally removed that annoying sentence in my signature.

Yep, the good old MUDs laid the foundations for the mighty MMO's of today. I would say EvE is the closest MMO to the MUDs of the past. The mostly player driven world reminds me of most Roleplaying MUDs or heavily modified MUDs that relied on large or dedicated playerbase to create their own worlds.

An now I catch players advertising text based games psssh. I'm the head PR staffer on the MUD and since this thread already exists here we go.
------------------------------------------------------------- On the weekend of 09.04.09 through 09.06.09 The Sea of Storms will be running a newbie player drive. Such bonuses will include free CP for creation, Customized Equipment for your nationality and character concept, and a special OOC item directly from the Event/Guild/PR Imm Jeshin... Me!
In addition to the special perks to creating a Sea of Storms account this weekend, we are providing CP rewards to people who create viable NPCs to be added to our NPC Database used for day to day Roleplays and Player Events. Check out the forums for more information.
The Sea of Storms: A Wheel of Time based MUD set in an alternate timeline before Laman cut down the tree and caused the Aiel war. Rand was never born and most of the main characters do not exist or are off doing their own things. We provide realistic setting items such as over 100 weaves and a unique channeling system and over 200 weapon forms for over 5 different weapons... Including Ashandarei.

Anybody remember LoRD (Legend of the Red Dragon) or Tradewars? Use to play those on BBC's back when I first learned about computers and the internet.

Indeed although I bet there's older on here. I cut my teeth writing myself games on the ZX81 in assembly. Discovering modems was pretty awesome especially after the advent of Zmodem. :)

I remember LoRD, used to play it all the time, in fact I signed up to lots of different BBS just so I didn't have to wait for my next go, lol!
As for MUD's I used to play one called The Void in the early 90s, it's migrated to the internet now so I occasionally fire up zMud to see how things are there.. that was my first experience with online gaming... fun times
*fires up zMud...*
