I just started Eve today downloaded the client paid my 20 bucks and went in to check it out.
After about 10 hours of play asking questions in the rookie chat when needed I learned I'm pretty much 20 bucks poorer.
I created a fighter character jumped into the tutorial and followed it closely.
My first agent sent me on some nearby fedex missions, well ok thats cool I needed the dough anyway.
Then my first agent sent me on a kill mission to do in some drones that were worse armed and armored than I was (poor them). But hey its a fighter type mission and things are looking better. I got my 10 certificates and handed em in proudly.
Thats when my agent handed me over to the fedex from hell agent.
No more kill the nearly defenseless drones missions I'm delivery guy.
I completed all the story missions up to where the pirates were identified thats when I knew I had lost my mind. After the 16 jump ( 8 out and 8 back ) then the followling 12 jump ( 6 out and 6 back ) that it took to know who the pirates are I did not have the courage to go on in fear of another multi-jump mission and I honestly didn't care any more who they were.
There are parts of the game I like to be sure. The graphics are great the sound is fine.
But why oh why couldn't the missions be about getting me and my ship ready to be what I thought I created a fighter. No place in the character creation menu did I see Fedex as part of the fighter description.
I even tried to get myself ready after a few deliveries. I bought some extra cargo figured out I needed 28k worth of mechanical skill to use it. Oh well that skill was only 4 jumps to pick up. I needed weapons but I needed more skills before I could get more weapons. Those skills were 12 and 14 jumps to pick up. I was told do learning it helps with gaining skills. Learning was 16 jumps one way to get.
I ask in the rookie channel if I was seeing this right and if there was any other way to have fun besides watching my ship fly all day long. A few responded but more along the lines "omg you don't like watching your ship fly?!". Nobody told me of any other alternative.
It is my hope that mixed in among the flames I'm sure to get for this post, that there is an alternative to the "Structured game guided" first day I just had and that some one will share it.
I'm already poised to cancel but I do have 30 days for my 20 bucks to find the fun if it exists.
Please before you make me put on my flame retardant eye wear, read that I made a fighter, I tried only the missions I was guided to do by the game ( I could not afford any others anyway ). When I was puzzled by the game I ask questions in the rookie chat. In short I tried to figure it out and do the fighter thing before I got to this point.
Ok have at me, or not.

There is no such thing as a "fighter" char.
Best you can do is choose carefully what attribs you want.
And this game is not for ADD type peoples.
You must have patience, but if you do work through the boring times, the fighting will make your heart pound like no other game.
You will need to ultimately find a good corp, with a good TS server.
Then the fun will begin
Pod ya later!

If you want to fight, you went about it wrong. Find an agent that is in a security department. The VAST majority of missions he will give out are kill missions. This is how you get in your fighting.
You can also go patrol asteroid belits in 0.9 and below space and you will find plenty of things to take on. If you feel suicidal, pop into a 0.4 space and you will see fighting galore. The pirates will be HARD and the PKers will be harder.
By the way, NPC pirates are referred to as Rats while PC pirates are actualy Pirates. -- Kraythe |

Edited by: Seto Mazzarotto on 18/10/2004 02:56:52 Hang in there. As others have suggested, if you want combat, go to a military NPC corporation and offer your services to the agents there. Seek out a good player corporation that offers PvP and has a good TeamSpeak server -- the latter is vital, this game THRIVES on fast communication and your hands free to activate modules.
And, of course, seek out asteroid belts in 0.8 and lower. 0.8 is minimal threat, 0.5 is where you'll deal with the full range of NPC frigates. 0.4 and below it starts to get interesting, as you start dealing with NPC cruisers and the possibility of player pirates.
All in all, step away from Mr. Fedex. And as soon as you can, train Navigation and Afterburner skills to L4 to be able to use MicroWarp Drives, it'll cut your travel times in half.
EDIT: To get a fair grasp on corporations to join, hit up EVE-Radio and listen to the ads played between DJ commentary and the songs. Gives the corps that pay for those ads incentive to keep running 'em, and they add to the game atmosphere. ----------- Fighting for the ideals of freespace, posthuman ethics, and rock & roll. |

I have to say the tutorial agent is kind of boring, and the next agent is ...welll really lame. yes you will be a delivery guy. However there is method to the madness. It teaches you about the surrounding systems and brings you in contact outsside your starter system. Once you do the 10-12 missions for him you will get a nice standings increas and be able to work a decent lev 1 agent, if tht is the route you choose.
You do not need to do the missions you are doing now. If they bore you do something else. Go mine (yawn), or hunt npcs ina 0.8 system until you have enough skill to try harder ones.
Joining a corporation does help. It gets you allies, gear and help with general gameplay (feel free to contact me ingame if you are looking for one or just want some help).
Eve can be a great game, it is just slow to start, waiting for those initial skills to finish is a killer. Not to mention making isk to get your ships/gear/skills.

If you wanna learn more about the fun aspects of the game Emit, I suggest maybe going and joining up with EVE University. They can teach you everything you need to know as that is what they specialize in doing. I think you would do well to go there and learn with them.

I just started playing a few day's ago as well, it started that I already had a friend playing whom picked me up from the training ground, so i skipped the original agent missiosn (i went back and did them on my second and third days) Yeah alot of the "fedex" missions are just watching your ship fly, hehe - When you get bored of those theres pirates to hunt.. I know a place or two that have computer pirates spawning all the time, and the loot is good too usually so if you want to message me in game i'd be more then happy to give you the location of it (I dun't wanna post it cause it might become popular with the newbies hehe.) Also if your willing to spend a few more dollars, usually you can buy stuff thats most i've seen is 3 jumps away... best sell price, closest sell location, you can choose yourself whether its worth your time to save that 300 ISK or not - Your totally not limited to agent missions (who would stick around if thats all there was? HAH) I totally intend to renew my account!

umm i dont think he was trying to insult him just more informing him that thats how the game is/isn't
anyway i suggest you find a nice corp to join and things get a little better and you'll have them give advice
as for the fighting i'd start out fighting in astroid belts in a 0.8 or 0.7 system and as you advance i'd move down a system
also mining is 1 way to make money and it brings in quite a lot more then hunting

The first month of EVE sucks. The tutorial missions suck. Sub-500k skill point characters suck. The novelty of a giant universe filled with people good and bad is basically the only way that EVE keeps people past the first month (after that youre hooked and you'll probably not be leaving for a while).
If you like the game though, keep playing. After about a month you can say the hell with most of the boring stuff, and join a corp that does what you want to do.
Its up to you to decide if you'll have enough fun after a while to put up with the crap at the beginning. It greatly helps to join a good PC corp, especially if you intend to go into PVP. Even if you'd rather PvE, manufacture crap, or mine, you'll still have a good time in a corp (unless they dont use teamspeak, in which case you'll probably end up wanting to shoot all your corpmates in the face).
Originally by: Sochin CCP has provided you with the tools you need to avoid crime. You're just too lazy/stupid to use them.

Eve offers more than any other MMORPG out there. Its a proactive game though, that requires a ton of time. Unlike other MMORPG it is impossible to powerlevel, so you often find yourself specializing in combat depending on what skills sets you focus on early on. But Eve is one of the slowest starters out there, join a corp.

Yea, you absoloutly can't expect to get somewhere in the first day, you really have to put some time into it...
This is a game that you are supposed to play for months and years at a time, if you aren't interested in spending that amount of time to get somewhere you did waste 20 bucks.
By the way, this is a good opportunity to say this, but the 14 day free trial is extremly hard to find on the main webside. In fact I can't seem to find it at all, but that might just be because I'm very tired.
