Well.........
Back in May, I bought a Sandwich from a store that rhymes with 'Best Clothes'. It was a 'Best Clothes' finest Beef & Mustard sandwich, lovely and moist pink meat with the subtle compliment of crisp lettuce and flavoured mayonnaise. I accompanied it with some fine Chocolate chip muffins, and a packet of cigarettes - Benson & Hedges Gold. It was a lovely day, the sun shone, the birds chirped, and my car was working. Unknown to me, I mistakenly used the wrong credit card,
Being the administrative type, I moved house about a year ago, and never changed my address details for that particular account. So, 3 months later I get a rerouted letter alerting me to the situation.
The original cost now had an extra overdraft usage fee, of ú22 per month overdrawn. I now owed the bank ú75.40. Which I paid, with a rather unpleasant beefy aftertaste.
Two months later I get another letter - it turns out - there were additional overdraft fees that had not been applied until two weeks AFTER I had cleared the overdraft - and these fees, amounted to ú88.00, plus an additional ú22.00 for the month that the account was once again overdrawn.
So, I shouted at Barclays today, and closed a bank account. Because my dumbass bought a ú185.40 PDS sandwich on 14th May.

I've only got a credit card so I can have something to build up credit. I never buy anything with it that I couldn't buy with my own money already, and I usually have it paid off within three or four months.

The consumer credit act 1974. If you buy anything that turns out to be defective, within a certain price range, you can claim the cost back from the credit card provider if the supplier goes bankrupt. Useful for booking holidays or purchasing anything else sold by businesses with a high failure rate.
You don't currently get the same level of protection when buying things with a debit card. --- 34.4:1 mineral compression ISRC Racing, Season 7 - schedule |

Because when my credit card details get stolen, they only steal credit card company money, and not mine. The system is not secure because it's cheaper to just write off the thefts than it is to make a secure system. I thing that if I used my debit card, and it got stolen or cloned, and it was my money that got stolen, I imagine the bank would be a lot less interested in the situation than they are when it's their money getting jacked.
Since it's happened twice in 10 years, I find the risk unacceptable to gamble my own money on it.
And hey look! Here come the guys with the smart mouths about to tell me how I shouldn't click on phishing emails, here they are look! Hi Guys! Did you get that job in an accounts department in a small business with a credit card machine I advised you to get, so that you could see and learn just how easy it is to jack credit cards? No? Goodness me... well why don't you sit right there and tell me not to click on phishing emails again... there's a good little spastic....

Because certain services simply wont accept debit and if they do it has additional hassles attached.
My father gave me the best advice when it comes to credit cards:
1. Only have 1 credit card ever. If this is not an option only keep 1 credit card on you and leave the rest at home in a lock box.
2. never use a card on things such as food, gas, anything that you can not return.
3. only use a credit card when you have the money in your debt account. Credit card use should only be for building your credit for the few times in your life that you need more money then you have.
4. Always pay the bill in full and on time. On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

That's how I do it, works a treat.
edit:
And for the "But you need credit cards to do X crowd" please stop.
Credit-Debit cards are the in-thing, a nice little feature of a bank card that uses your money but acts like a credit card. They come in visa/mastercard etc. I use it for paying EVE, buying stuff electronically etc. It's the excact same as a debit card, but endorses credit card functionality.
So it's like a pre-paid interest free credit-card EVE history

When I saw the title I thought you had bought a sandwich from the same place as me in London.
ú17.80 for a parma on ciabatta butty with sundried toms and a herb/garlic oil dressing. Apprently, I had to pay ú3.50 for the dressing alone. That wasnt from a restuarant mind, that was from a sandwich stall in one of the posher markets in the City.
Did taste nice though .. I nearly went and bought another one the next day

Air Miles baby! It costs me nothing in interest as I pay in full every month any outstanding balance (thru direct debit), so I just get air miles for doing nothing. Almost got enough for a free return trans-atlantic trip Plus it's nice to know that there's fraud protection and all that jazz. Originally by: Jacob Mei 1. Only have 1 credit card ever. Not sure I'd necessarily agree on #2, but the rest is very good advice. -------------

Credit card companies are the devil in prada. If you want to build your credit for a new car or home then apply for a small personal loan from your bank and then get another as soon as the first is paid off. If you don't have the cash to buy something with your bank debit card then don't buy it. If you want it bad enough you will find the cash to get it through normal means like working a few moar hours or picking up an odd job. Simple as that. Enjoy the rest of your debt free and high credit rating life.

You aren't wrong here by any means, but, used responsibly, CCs aren't all fire n' brimstone. I will admit I screwed up my early 20s by racking up CC debt, but my first serious job after uni and a lot of determination, I paid them all off (and my entire student loan). I now have the one CC, always pay it off in full and on time automatically and I don't think twice about using it as a cash substitute for most things, even if just for the convenience and reward points.
It's also handy to buy something toward the tail end of the month when I wouldn't necessarily have the full amount available in the bank, but will days before my statement arrives. Your advice isn't bad at all, nor even close, but as long as it's used responsibly and sensibly, there's no harm in using it over a debit card. Especially when you buy goods over ú50. Saying that, any 18 y/o kid of mine will get a damn good talking too about the visa and the amex before they'd be allowed near an application for one! -------------

Totally agree. A single credit card with a few thousand available is a nice bit of backup to ease the hit of a bad months bills or in case of an emergency when you need the money now. But the companies themselves are ebil bastages ropeing in everyone they can with instant credit they don't have the discipline to use yet. Then when the poor sod inevitably gets behind it snowballs right to hell in penalty fee's so he has to apply for assistance to pay his bills and eat. So now we have yet another dependant mooching off our tax dollars so some cc company directors and stockholders can live it up in decadence. Not saying there is anything wrong with making a profit and living good off of it but not because you are a predator stalking people you know will go into default and be legaly forced to pay off several times the original debt in penaltys.

I've never had one and admitedly never looked into it, out of noobish curiousity - is there a fee each month for having one if you buy nothing? __________________

Sadly true. They thrive on people's debts and inabilities to manage it. More unscrupulous companies are few and far between. Originally by: Kappas. I've never had one and admitedly never looked into it, out of noobish curiousity - is there a fee each month for having one if you buy nothing?
The majority of credit cards are free of fees, simply for having it. That is not always the case however, and there are many that do charge an annual fee simply for the privaledge of carrying it in your wallet. It can vary from ú15-ú150 but is generally low, though as I mentioned most are 'free'. However if you withdraw cash from an ATM, there's always a charge for doing so (the charges on mine are such that if I were to withdraw $10 from within the USA, I would incur approx. $11 charges on top!). They charge a percentage if you want to transfer a balance across (so when they advertise "Interest Free Balance Transfers" it's because they charged you ú20-ú100 for the transfer).
They're handy as a cash alternative/emergency situation thing but if yuo've managed so far without one, I'd say you could go the rest of your days without ever having to deal with one and the potential headaches. -------------

Cripes...ú3.50 for the dressing. That's over $5.50 in Monopoly money (USD).
Must be one heck of a sammich.

I had 3 credit cards before I was 20. I was a dumb, naive guy in the army who thought it was awesome to not have to carry cash around all the time anymore. Back then I also thought it was perfectly ok to pay just the minimum every month.
I was an idiot.
I'm back to cash only now, if I don't have money for something I don't need it.
The only thing I charge now is on my ID badge at work (which gets deducted from my paycheck every 2 weeks). Meals from the cafeteria or subway, starbucks, or a soda from the gift shop.
I will never carry a credit card again, I learned my lesson.
