Experience
I get nothing towards increasing my skill levels by action. I think the foundation of that system is already in place, with the skill points and time factor.
But how about adding bonus points to a certain skill when you use that skill?
If I do nothing but mine all day long, typical Eve day, then I should get some skill points added to total needed for my next level.
If I use Hybrid turrets, all the time, then I should get some skill points in that corresponding skill as well. Same goes for traveling and navigation skill.
Any ideas?

if you do nothing but mine all day long you make lots of isk
You know what that isk lets you do compared to someone else that doesnt play eve much, you get to buy ships and expensive equipment. That's where your reward for playing so much comes from, the ability to buy better weapons/ships then your opponent who doesnt play as much. ................. |

That would never work in the structure of Eve. The entire gameplay of Eve is based on a function of time. Skilltraining is (obviously) based on a function of time. That time can be shorter or longer, depending on attributes. You buy the skills with ISK, which is made based on an factor of time. A mining laser has a cycle time of 60 seconds, and that is never going to change. What does change is how much ore you pull in per cycle, based on skill levels. Training your skills decreases the time needed to reach a goal. Research is based on time, and if you take the time to train the research skills up, it takes you less time to research a blueprint, which means you can make money off of it sooner. The whole point of the time factor is to prevent powerleveling, thus keeping a larger player base.
/emote wonders if he made any sense there at all.......

So ccp finally thought of some system that allowsd for skill training wihtout the damn need for repetitive action to trains one particaular skill ansd you come and suggest they change it all back to the way all the other (inferior) mmo's do it !
If for example shooting at an NPC from a short range would increase my tracking and gunnery skills I would be afk shooting an NPC all day to get that lvl 5 faster.
Activity based skilltraining sucks because it leads to training macros that ultimately lead to everyone that doesnt want to get behind needing to use them all day.

Hmmm, intresting point. By introducting exp bonus points to the skill system, your saying that the player that is logged in and doing stuff will get an advantage over another player who is not playing the game?
I agree and disagree I think.
It appears that the player logged in will make money, while the player logged out will not. However both players gain the same skill growth. Money gets skills.
Ok, yea, i may agree, makes some sense.
I just like the idea of becomeing someone better at something if I do more of "that something" while in the game.
Thanks for the feedback,

Yes, this is a good point too. However I thought that marcos are not able to be created for this game, hence there presently are no hot keys for certain functions. As much as I wish there were.

One of my favorite parts of EVE is that it rejects the experience points/levelling treadmill that exists in virtually every other MMO.
Earth and Beyond had an experience point system in a SciFi setting, now it's gone. Let's all learn from this lesson, shall we?

Macros can be made for this game, sadly enough. Any game reliant on keystrokes and mouseclicks is vulnerable to macros.
However, CCP does not allow any use of macros. Its a bannable offence.
And yes, there are hotkeys for some functions, tho not that many. You can see about making some more in the shortcut menu under the <ESC> button.

It used to be like that, pre-Castor. I got my Mechanic, Hull Upgrades, and Afterburner from 4 to 5 in a couple of months just by flying an indy around a lot, without setting those skills to train.
Unfortunately, they had some sort of bug where one day everyone got 256,000 points in some skill because the server calculated wrong, and they removed the whole system.
I don't remember the details, it was long ago, but I'd guess if they don't add it back in, they must have their reasons.

I have to say I like Eve's skill system. It allows people who dont have that much time to play to keep up with those that do play a lot more in what they can do, but they wont have as much experience in what they HAVE done (ie Make money). So although people that play all day, all night etc. will have more money, a person that can only play a few hours a day will not fall behind in what they can do, IE you've only mined for 20 hours in total, you cant use a Miner II. As has been said, you can buy a load of skills and do nothing but change skills for a year - and you wont get anywhere. You need money, items, experience even stuff like standing to do well, and that's the reward you get from playing

EVE has XP, it's just gained differently. XP=SP.
Oh, and since it's made to be fair - it's not gained by actions. ------------------- :: finite horizon :: killboard ::
