I keep revising my level of caring, Jonny. It varies between "foolhardy, but sweet" and "blasted idiot." We were comrades, after all, and you can be charming even when you're refusing to think.
Lately, as you've become increasingly nasty and dismissive, the trend has been downwards. It's a pity.

Ad hominem, not that I expected better. I'm talking more to your would-be followers than to you, even if you are the one I directly address. They, at least, might listen.
I won't wish you luck. Goodbye, Jonny. May you find wisdom, and the sooner the better.

Ah-- a theory to be explored in another Interstellar Intrigue novel, perhaps. And you're not the first to get that impression after Mr. Damordred and I have crossed swords here.
The truth isn't nearly so much fun. We're old comrades from Omerta Syndicate, and I respect him just enough that his thoughtless remarks and actions sting more than most people's do. That's all.

Edited by: Mebrithiel Ju''wien on 09/09/2009 00:36:55 Oh please!
I've tanked a doomsday device in a tech one omni-tank fitted armageddon. It was EC-P8R and it was Tom McCash who fired it on the Torrinos gate. Admitedly, as SirMolle might know, Tom wasn't perfectly skilled up on its damage potential, but I still survived with 100% hull and some armor to spare.
Put simply, I have a ship that will tank any single doomsday, in the form of my damnation. I'll join the fray purely to lend the gangmod bonuses, Jonny. I'll actually laugh should my ship not survive an Oblivion blast.
More importantly, I'll get front row seats to the fight.
Any of you who wouldn't at least watch this should grow some balls! The State isn't going to attack the Federation on the part of a few pod-pilots wanting to take down one of their titans.
You have my axe.

Probably a good bit more.
Just having a titan in close orbit is enough to cause destructively high tides. Imagine, if you will, what a gravitational flux device will do.
you are mistaken. the Oblivion device is essentially a giant particle acclerator, it fires a massive stream of particles from special ports on the levithians hull, designed to sweep the field of battle. its range is about 250km from the hull before the particle field has dispersed sufficiently that it poses nn danger to an decent shield system.
what effect would detonating such a weapon over a planet have?
probably very little. you are, i assume, familiar with the phenominon known as Auroras?
they are a visible light discharge created by high energy particles hitting a planitary atmosphere and being violently robbed of their energy by the resulting friction.
detonating the titans Oblivion above a planet would merely put on an impressive lightshow for those below. it is possible that you would dose one side of the planet with excessive hard radiation, but thats nothing modern gallente medicine cant fix cheaply and quickly.
in short the Oblivion is not a threat, the real threat is the bulk of the titan itself. it wouldnt be the first time the caldari chose to fly a capital ship into a planet rather then let it get blown up, and if the caldari decide to do an Admiral Yakia Tovil-Toba imitation, we are in trouble. the Luminare titan: lets pop that *****! http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1175042&page=1 |

Ah! Right you are-- at least with respect to the nature of the device. I should really remember to go check the database rather than just going off best recollection.
As for its effects ... the aurora effect is usually caused by something a little less intense. And do let's keep in mind that even a shuttle is capable of lingering indefinitely at close proximity to a star. Still, we're probably back to atmospheric disruption and hard radiation, rather than some fun geological event.
You know, I'm tired of arguing about this. Let's try it and find out.

I'm no professional astronomer, but I imagine the effect of a man-made, high intensity particle storm to be similar to the Seyllin event. Of course the point of origin would have to be close, considering the inverse-square law. But the current distance should be sufficient.

Well, why risk one falling object when you can turn it into many?
Oh, I was thinking Mr. Damordred might perhaps care about pieces falling down and causing destruction to certain parts of the planet? It's not really going to help his campaign if a Gallente district gets harmed.
Making the situation between the State and Federation worse by such open provocation doesn't really seem clever to me either.

This is a monumentally stupid idea. But since it's clear to me that none of you will be talked out of it, I'll have to make do with saying this:
Should you by some miracle manage to muster enough firepower to force that Leviathan to deploy it's Oblivion device in order to obliterate your fleet, and if it does end up causing as much devastation on the planet below as we all fear, I sincerely hope that you will look down at the remains of what used to be Caldari Prime and realize the magnitude of your mistake.
Sadly though, if I'm honest, I doubt that will happen either.

I'm just orbiting that damn thing. The planet has a radius of around 30.000 km and a gravitation of 24.6 m/s^2. The distance from here to the planet surface is 22798 km. This means that a doomsday should not effect the atmosphere beyond a nice light effect. You overestimate the power of human devices over the power of nature. No ship gets any measurable harm if it is more than 500 meter away from the gravition pulse a titan produces. So it should not effect the life on the planet in any way.
I say: don't speculate about an issue, fly there, take a look, measure it and do it in a scientific way. I see no way that this titan can effect the life on the planet in any way when it gets shredded.
Be rational - do it the Sebiestor way. Yay! If I kill one of these vessels will they begin to shoot at me? Gee! Haha! Diveattack! -- FREEDOM, PUNK & AUTOCANNONS

((Needless to say most data regarding orbit altitude and planet characteristics are crap. Most of this debate is a moot point.))
From my position as an observer, it seems that preparations for this event proceed regardless. I also somehow doubt many Federation loyalists will take the advice of Cartel and Guristas affiliates to heart.

What we do is business Mr. Inhonores. What Mr. Damordred has involved himself in is politics, something incredibly more sinister and dangerous to others then mere piracy.
And as much as many of us have let go of sentimentality, many still have a soft spot for their ancestral home of Caldari Prime. _______________________________

If the Caldari Navy does indeed launch the device, and Caldari Prime suffers major planetary damage, I would feel no remorse whatsoever.
Why? Simple. It was not me who would make the error to launch the device, it's in the Navy's hands. Any loss of life would be their responsibility and theirs alone. It was their doing that placed the Titan in orbit, with no goal less than inflicting this same carnage upon the Gallente. If you bring a bomb to my house to threaten me, but explodes in your hands due to mismanagement on your part, should I feel sad it blew you up and not me?

you know what I saw when I went to Luminaire on Liberation Day?
I saw what must have been five or six hundred pilots in battleships, loaded for Titan.
I believe that, according to my tactical sensors, the Leviathan's shields had dropped by one or two pixels on my overview, and they had been pounding on it for a solid three hours by that point.
I have no idea what kind of crazy military-grade shield tanking equipment she's loaded with, but it gave it passive defenses leagues in advance of any half-hearted capsuleer attempt to blow it up.
So by all means, go and shoot at her. All you'll do is waste ammunition and money, and the admiral of the fleet will STILL refrain from the overreaction everybody fears. About the only thing you'll achieve is proving that the Caldari Navy is far more professional than you, Pilot Damordred, could ever hope of being. - Verin "Stitcher" Hakatain. |

Dear mr. Damordred,
I will be happy to see you and your crazy ass comrades being killed on a ridiculous attemp to attack on Caldari State. Are you really so naive that you think you can get even a dent on the Leviathans shields before Caldari Navy blast you into oblivion. Only thing I hope is that I could be there unplugging your clone before it downloads your memories. I didn't think you would get this delusional when you told you are gonna run for the president. During the couple last days I have actually started to think it would be good news for my home state to have you as the president of the tattering Gallente Federation. May your Federation stay ever so weak.
I praise the lord I was born in the level-headed Caldari State and living with the sensible Amarr.
