I dont really understand the point of the radar display in the lower right. I know that it shows things in your vicinity and might even show hostiles but the boxes are so small and unlabeled that it doesnt seem practical for targeting. Am I missing something or should i just shut it off? -- Kraythe |

How do you shut it off? Is it an option?
I like it because it helps with picking up loot.

The auto tactial display in the shiva beta test is MUCH better than the stupid radar display. Just wait a few weeks and keep the radar turned off in the mean time :) // Colonel O'Neill

I use that display when ninja-mining in hostile space. I zoom it out to 50km. The minute anything moves in that display, I press the 'get me the h3ll outa here!' button. It has probably saved my life... It's just easier to spot an approaching ship in that view than to keep constantly looking around the asteroid belt. Just me, Bad |

Depending on what you're doing it can be VERY useful. 99% of the time it's pretty useless, though, yes

first option on the left under the generic option tab, ( labeled radar ) ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

I think the radar is a tribute to the computer game Elite, the mother of all space simulations, especially of Eve. At least I saw this radar there the first time. In 1987.
In Elite it was very usefull to keep the overview during the joystick action in the 1st person view. But in Eve with it¦s 3rd person view and tactical fighting it¦s the first thing to turn off after the installation. |

While this particular item is largely useless in the current UI, it's interesting to note that this is basically what the tactical overlay is in Shiva. Except it's implementation is more useful, in that it's overlaid onto your view of space and has proper distance markers.

Why don't you use the scanner?
The scanner is THE most useful tool in the UI imo.
When your mining you can set the range to 12km and get a nice list of everything in range of your lasers, and when your hiding from enemies you can use the directional scanner to find out exactly where they are.
Its brilliant! (yeah I know im goin off topic )

Tuwile, I've never actually messed with the scanner too much. Til now, all I use that for is when I enter an asteroid belt, I pull up the scanner and begin locking on to the nearest rocks that interest me (usually scordite or kernite, system depending). After that I close it. It seems like sensing movement in that little blueish sphere is a much faster way to avoid enemies than to be scrolling a list of text, looking for entries... I may have the wrong idea about the scanner tho. I'll take another look at it tonight. maybe I'm not using it right... Just me, Bad |
