Edited by: Iron Jaw on 12/09/2009 08:31:40 That was acutaly quite intresting, and also quite a funny insight into how CCP works, what with QA and the Programers constantly in a battle of wits.
DEV - IV FIXED THE DYSYNC ISSUE!!!
QA - Well acutaly if you undock 60 titans at the same time you get Dysync so you'll have to fix that issue 1st or we wont release the patch

...I just littered the code with extremely detailed logging of every calculation and every variable.
In the end it often comes down to this Didn't quite catch the superset story, but a valiant attempt at explanation anyways. As a programmer often looking for that one 'quick fix' someone did 5 years ago deep, deeeeeep down in the code I salute you sir o/\o :) --- Sol: A microwarp drive? In a battleship? Are you insane? Edited by: Lusulpher on 12/09/2009 10:53:57 Any chance you can work a kamikaze-esque Ramming feature into the game now?
And can this simulation engine be updated to allow pieces of hulls to be severed? A la, Pirates of the Burning Sea, when your ship loses it's masts. They break, splash and fade away...and I'm pretty sure I heard the Devs say body molding was coming to the ship models, soonTMish. Might be Dx10, though.
Would be nice to crumple a dessie into a cruiser and stun the bastard.

Thank you for such a fine and explanatory lecture. After the session I felt much smarter and enlightened
Rest assured we, the capsuleers, are in good hands and from now on, curse the day when some bozo decides to launch 10-20 titans at the same time.

I keep repeating muself, but do you know what would break blobs ? To stop shooting automatically on the target, but on the line to your target.
If you have a corpmate between you and the target, badaboom.
This would break blobs, and I think something could be done via Dragon/Destiny.
Fleet play would requires a lot more than "align to", "primary Kweel", F1-F8... Fetchez la vache ! moar(tm) < soon(tm) :(

Kudos for a really nice and informative writeup... eh sorry, class...
I really liked the part about the new bumping calculations, but not the part about them not being included. But i will look forward to testing it on SISI.

Still very werid bumping/dely mechanics exist so you didn't do to good here.
Take 20 or so dreads. Gang warp them to a point stop them all. 5 minutes later they will for some unexplainable reason slowly start moving.

How I wish desync was gone. I hope I don't ruin CCP Gingerdude's day.
I have read that QA pushed the bulk of your desync changes back, but since the last small patch I've stumbled across a problem; I can hold out to Dominion 'course, but here is something that showed up about 40 minutes ago. I was not bounced by a multitude of titans either, nor anything else big - however, I did pass through a huge collidable coral structure, albeit another 20 minutes previous to the issue.
Desync capture Caption(?): I wonder if that module has anything to do with it... T2 AND Named? Magic.
I'm aware the module I was trying to take wasn't worth much, but as I hope you'll agree it's not the point.

This is your chance to make a ginger cry. Go for it. File a bug report with a detailed account of how it happened.

Well, firstly, I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. :p
Secondly, I thought bug reports are filed when the error is reproducible? As CCP Gingerdude had issues himself tracking the error in code to begin with, there's no way I could make a 'detailed account' as what caused the desync is more-so unbeknownst to me.
As much as I can tell, the small changes from the recent patch have not changed anything - again not basis for a petition;
"Game Over. Patch failure, insert credits!"
All I can hope is that it's truly fixed in Dominion.
CCP Gingerdude's Devblog "Facing Destiny" excerpts:
"Nice, so problem solved, right?
Well, almost. At this time we wrote the patch notes for Apocrypha 1.5 and claimed to have fully fixed the issue. And we had, really. But I wasn't completely done." - i.e. not completely implemented due to 'evil' QA setting some changes back.
-- "Dominion is what happens next. I'm sorry to keep you guys and gals waiting for the rest of the tweaks and for the fact that we may have jumped the gun slightly by calling the desync issue fully fixed in this patch when there may still be at least a hypothetical chance of desync." - Perhaps more than hypothetical?

Yeah, I want to hear about the tech limits on Line-Of-Sight engagement in EVE. Blobbing is a playstyle but does not take much talent(peruse my rant about tactical Cynos)
Can you upgrade the simulation models to be 'combat sensitive'? And trust us we would not need Fleet Formations to get it working.
Consider it a boost to Capitals/Missiles also, as they could tank for a fleet of Drakes. All the missiles could go around at the edge of a Dread and hit the enemy who logically would not use missiles in PvP.
And if scramblers/EWAR worked the same way, I would wet myself. Can fly between the scrammer and the scrammed to break absorb the tackling. Tactical positioning in EVE combat...yummy. 7 |

Whilst wiping the tears away I'm still left wondering what happened. The desync changes already released mostly focused on ship-to-ship collisions, but you mention that you "passed through a huge collidable coral structure". Did you warp into that structure or did you fly through it bumping all the time?

I'm sorry that I do not have all the details as I wasn't really paying much attention at how I intersected these huge collidables (too busy shooting at things). I am glad you stumbled across my posts as I was hoping to let you know it exists however.
I forget the name of the huge collidable, it looked like coral formation only in it's title it has something about it being 'twisted' or 'gnarled'... or something. I did not warp in on the structure; I was in the mission 'Flame of Peace' (I fail to remember which part of the mission - sorry) where in there is a Cultists' Habitat you have to shoot which is embedded within this huge collidable. The rats are also roundabouts the same area and so I was often having to pass through the 'graphic' of this collidable to orbit enemies. Whereas some of the structure was empty in mass (i.e. it was just graphics) there was some bouncing from presumably some mass in there.

It's a late post, but by god this is one of the best blogs I've seen in ages (and a great tale from the trenches of development; it struck a lot of chords with me). I really feel for you on the whole silent war with QA - our QA people are also very good at their jobs, which is good for customers, less good for our hairlines. Superb blog, superb story, superb result! Well done! ___ My views may not represent those of my corporation, which is why I never get invited to those diplomatic parties... Environmental Effects

Bump for Dev response.
But will be patient for he is manipulating the very foundation of Serious Internet Spaceship performance and immersion.
If he does this right, we can have ship also roll from weapon impacts instead of just shake camera. And a real anti-primary feature(idea tossed around about destroying loot if target was blobbed).
This is the equivalent of the detail and immersion of Ambulation...in Space.
Gingerdude be praised! One of them, one of them. 7 |
