One idea I've seen posted all over the place is the request for salvage drones, but it doesn't look like any movement has been made on it. I'd like to offer an alternative -- Tractor Drones.
Essentially the Tractor Drones would fly about the battlefield and auto-target wrecks. They would then lock a tractor beam onto the wreck and tow it back to within 2,500 km of your position and/or orbit you at 2,500 km so that you could salvage the wreck and open its cargo. Because they are drones, they would be able to go beyond the 20 km range of a small tractor beam (limited of course by the pilot's drone skills).
I imagine that the drones would have to be larger to accommodate engines large enough for towing large wrecks.

WAYYYYY too much hassle from a programming perspective. Introducing Medium and Large Tractor Beams into the game will do the exact same thing.
The current reason why there aren't any more Tractor Beam modules in the game is due to how wonky the current Tractor Beam code is. As soon as CCP sorts out the bugs (as well as the various abilities that a Tractor Beam should have) then these modules will finally be added to the game. |

Salvage drones I can see. There's a skill for it already. I don't think CCP want us to sit afk in mission ships (hiya Domi!) and afk when looting the field after the fact. You should have to move and press a button every few minutes to get your payout.

Tow drones, want.
Work like normal drones, but instead of attacking with the engage command they attach themselves to the target object and tow it back to the ship. Would function like a tractor beam except not taking away a high-slot (and having better range).
I would love this because it seems every other mission is set up so that after taking 2 minutes to blow some NPC's up you have to spend 10 minutes flying your big, slow battleship to the other side of the grid to get the can containing the mission objective. Why, CCP, why is the mission objective always "over there". Why is it always that the bigger and slower a ship you need to finish the mission the farther away the damn mission critical item drops? Why? /rant
