As I don't want to abuse RaTTuS' In-Eve thread, I thought it would be a good idea to start a new thread. EVE-Sheet is located at http://eve-sheet.com/, and is a service much like inEVE, in that it allows you to create a character sheet for the purposes of selling your character, and allowing you to keep track of training via a webbrowser from anywhere in the world. Recently I've seriously upped the rankings page, so people can now show off their ePeens again to one another as well
Anyways, to continue with the few latest replies to the In-EVE thread, in order of appearance.
Originally by: Seradhin Pity there isn't a total SP in lvl5 skills ranking as it looks like I would get 2nd in that, still 4th in number of lvl5 skills is decent enough
Another request taken care of
Originally by: Mashie Saldana We need rankings based on number of Elite certs.
Good idea, and I'll see how easy it would be to add this. This post will be updated when added.
Originally by: honour HeHe i made 4th on total skills :) if i had enuff dosh i could get another 5 or 6 :) 1 more bs5 and lrg turret 5 to go!
Congrats! A major achievement in and by itself! Good luck on getting the extra ISK together
------------------------
For the last few days I've had a poll running on the site to see what it is most of you want to see changed/added etc to EVE Sheet. The overwhelming opinion seems to be the ability to mark sheets as private. I'm seriously looking into this. I have a method in place to do so for new characters, but that would require all current characters to re-add themselves, which is a pain in the ass. There's some more things I can start doing once sheets are capable of being set private, and I can't wait to get to it. More updates on this Soon(tm). If you guys have other suggestions, ideas or tips, by all means, post below or send me an email at the address listed on the EVE Sheet site.

I think that both sites are used for referencing a characters skills , And since they both are similar in that respect , they should both be allowed in the same forum . And I think that players looking for those kinds of reference won't want to look in two different forums for the discussion threads . It is a good point though , but my gut feeling is keep the two threads here . When I think of a "Services Forum" , I think more along the lines of POS Fueling , or Contract Hauling , Merc Corps , etc.

That's like claiming that tools like EVE-MEEP and EMMA can no longer be listed on S&I or MD because they're services (EMMA even sells licenses). EVE-sheet has had a thread here before, In-Eve's thread has been listed here for years, and there's absolutely no problem with EVE-sheet having a thread here again.
It's great that EVE-sheet is getting added functionalities

Do you still plan on implementing the feature we talked about a while ago where you can show off what T2 mods you can use in game similar to the ship list?
It would be handy if you could click on a corp and see all chars in that corp listed with a summary one page (this might have to wait until the private sheets are implemented though) as well as alphabetical listing/search of characters.

Nice site, and at the time of writing, loads much faster than in the past. But I'm almost positive there used to be a 'rankings' stat on any particular character's page that listed an overall SP rank as well as individual rankings for each skill category. Was the removed for a specific reason? Is there a way to get it back, even if only for our own character(s)? -------------

No to the first thing. Longer answer: not for the foreseeable future, unless I can figure out how to do it in such a way that it doesn't become a complete mess. For some people the list of mods could very well be every single T2 module in the game. The question then arises: sort this list how? Marketgroups? Should I sort them at all? A lot of things that need to be worked out for this.
As for the second item you bring up, these are the kind of things that will most likely become available once I've fully implemented the private sheets feature is done. There's a LOT more that can be done at that point too. Lot's of fun and very handy little things.

This should be relatively simple and straightforward and is something I've been thinking about myself for some time. So the answer is, it'll definitely be there, but don't expect it within the next 2/3 days or so.
Originally by: Dretzle Omega How come it takes so long to load?

There's a few reasons it might seem long, most of which I'll address in the reply to KingsGambit. Besides that, it's actually pretty fast these days, thanks to a few modifications. I do admit the rankings page is a bit on the slow side, as is the main character sheet. For the rankings page, this is cause there's a LOT of data to be processed. Might not seem that way, but there is. Selecting 20 separate items from a database table with 33000+ rows and evaluating the return is not the fastest of tasks.

You are absolutely correct sir. There was indeed a rankings feature per character sheet, that showed your overall rank and your rank per skillgroup. However, calculating that in real time was such a performance killer I had to remove the it. To give you an idea, with multiple people requesting character sheets at the same time, I would sometimes see the server literally use up to 99% of all available memory and spike to loads far beyond what is normal for a site like this, and all that just for the database process. This would starve the other processes, such as the webserver itself, and overall everything would fall over. In other words, unacceptable, and thus removed. I might bring it back eventually, but I need to completely rewrite that part to make sure it does it in the background and so it doesn't kill the server.
Anyways, hope that answers everyone's questions so far. Thanks for the support, and with your input, it can become only better.

I'm only 4 days away from finishing the Subsystems skills myself, though I still have a handful of Rank 1s and quite a few Rank 2s to knock out. I know I'll never make 1st place on the Level 5 skills list, but I'm rather pleased to have gone from 33rd up to 2nd in a few months' time. Well that does explain that then! It also explains why the site is performing much faster I would imagine. How about, as a potential solution/food for thought, a 'button' that a viewer has to specifically click, to display the information? It keeps the benefit of aforementioned real time calculations not running automatically per page view, but only when selected, which I'd imagine would be magnitudes less often. Anyway, it's still a nice looking site and a useful resource...I think I just liked seeing my own page with a (relatively) high ranking...I'll never make any top ten, but my 5 year sub does put me in the top 1% for SPs at least (maybe even 0.1%) Rawr.
Oh, out of curiosity, if it isn't private information, (approx) how many Eve characters are on there? -------------

Might be a solution, but if there's a nice shiny button that says "CLICK ME FOR EPIC RANKINGS!" I'll bet you 9 out of 10 people will click it, thus still bringing the server to it's knees.
Originally by: KingsGambit Oh, out of curiosity, if it isn't private information, (approx) how many Eve characters are on there?
That's hard to ascertain to be honest, as API keys can be changed at any moment, and with the main focus of the site being able to aid and support in character sales, API keys change a LOT. If I just base a number off of a count of all characters in the DB where the amount of times they've been viewed is > 10, I get 21900 as a result. If I do the same but get a count for all characters where their total SP is > 0, I get 32790. Take your pick. I do know that RIGHT NOW in total I have 33625 characters in the DB that have been active (and valid!) at some point in time, or are still valid.
Does that answer your question? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Great site, Ryushe, sorry I'm late to the party! (thanks for telling me about it, Drahcir )
I'll see about getting a few more corp members over here so as to not skew the corporate average stats.
Is it possible for the user to drill down into the details to see the full rankings of any of the categories?
Hmm... Trip's moved into 2nd in level 5s and Qual's almost a year ahead of me in Science points now... might have to keep an eye on that.

Just trying to be constructive, but if you work with Ajax at some point in the future you may be able to show the page, then fill in all the details on the page as the process calculates and fills it in. This might greatly increase the perceived speed of the site.
But I do like it, and thanks!

Well, I WAS planning on making some interesting changes to EVE Sheet over the weekend, but that's all been put on hold by this news item. Basically CCP is shutting down the API for the whole weekend until Monday.
So there goes that plan.
Originally by: Dretzle Omega ...if you work with Ajax at some point in the future...
I probably will; some of the stuff I'm thinking about will be benefited by doing so. Might not exactly be the way you describe here, though.
Anyways, EVE Sheet will be 'down' starting Saturday until the API comes back up on Monday. What this IS doing though is showing me I might need a slightly different caching mechanism in the future if these kind of forced downtimes keep happening

I don't know if you are caching at all but from the sounds of it you are not (or at least not in a long term way). I am sure that a pretty simple database could be built to handle the import and caching of all of the chacter data from the API into your system. This would probably reduce your load significantly (by not having to make a call to the API and wait for the response from CCP) as well as increase performance of your site (for exactly the same reason). Logic could be put into place to call the API only when a new request comes in every hour, or when a skill finished up training, or so on (maybe multiple rules in a job sort of situation). Lots of benefits can be had from your standpoint.
Not to mention the reduced load on CCP's API server would probably reduce the problems we have been seeing this week that have caused them to shut down the API in the first place.
If I can help in any way, let me know or EveMail me in game.

How about once a night have a background task compute the percentile? Then the button could just serve up a static web page, no computation required. i would not know I was 14,386 of 22583 in real time, but I would see the 22583 and that as of last night 37 percentile was 14280 and 38th was 14521. You could do decilies if you wanted fewer entries. And some javascript could interpolate; as well showing people where they ranked.
Regardless, what a wonderful site. I have a standard group of tabs for my browser and my two eve-sheets are on them. It's just the easiest way to see if I have training available to be queued today.
Thanks again.
BTW folks, if you go to the site, couldn't hurt to click on an advertisement occasionally. Well, if you use Internet Explorer, then any click could be fatal but you get what I mean,

I'd like to see global stats back. I just want to know where I rank in each skill group. I know I'll never be top ten, but seeing my missiles skills in the top 30 leaves that - did I spend too long on those skills kinda feeling. InEve you can see where you are on the list for each group, although I imagine its a strain on the server keeping that data.

Edited by: Ryushe on 29/09/2009 22:41:57 First off, new feature: Faction Standings. You can now check your standings or the standings for the char you're interested in via the site. I've color coded it, with a very crude scale for now, and will expand and refine it over time. In the meantime, take a gander at my standings for instance for an example.
Next up after the above is fully done: Private Sheets.

Thanks for the kind words, and yes, there is some sort of caching mechanism in place. There's just a 'little' thing I need to figure out first before I can fully use it. Sadly the recent API downtime pretty much caught me by surprise, so I had no time to work on it or get it ready at all. Reducing load on the CCP API server seems like a good idea, one which I fully support.

Hey, don't give people any ideas there! There is obviously no cost involved with running the server, so no need for clicks </sarcasm> Thanks for the support though, much appreciated! As for the once a night task doing this. Just calculating it for one person per day (comparing to the other 33k entries) is already a heavy burden. I'd hate to think what would happen if I did it for everyone at once. I'd like to do it batched, but even in batches of 10 or 100 I'd be calculating all day. For now I'm keeping it as-is, I'm thinking about an alternative for this.
