Clouds on Mars. I think they've done a very good job with the clouds and I'd gladly sacrifice a little realism for more animation on the planet.

Though this little thing from the patch notes worry me:
Originally by: Patchnotes Some prime planets have had their graphics changed to an enhanced and more detailed version.
Does this mean that we won't get ALL new planets and that we still will have ugly planets for the majority of the game? What about moons? ----- Why doesn't anyone ever read the forums before posting? EVE is a game of adaptation and planning. Adapt or die. |

This was my concern as well. Perhaps only certain ones are complete or CCP is worried about injecting lag (Client side) so these become test systems. NO Sure all we can do is wait and see

Actually, please tell me the new planets are rotating at realistic speeds, when you look at most planets in the game you can see them rotate which is totally unrealistic.

Aside from the fact that there are worlds that rotate very fast, or have very high speed storm bands in the upper atmosphere (Jupiter comes to mind).
If you were to observe Uranus directly, you could probably see it turn, it's a pretty big world (25,400 km radius) but makes a full rotation every 17 hours, the same for Neptune (24,800 km radius, 16 hour rotation). This is of course, assuming you were stationary relative to the planet.

Tbh, I really wish CCP would move the planet warp-in closer to the surface, giving us a better view of the planet. Also, all space stations should be moved closer to the planet they are orbiting, X3 style. Perhaps even move some asteroid fields closer to planets.

Kor Azor Prime, Caldari Prime, I'm assuming Amarr Prime (haven't checked yet). The patch notes do state "Some prime planets have had their graphics changed to an enhanced and more detailed version" (emphasis mine)

Amarr Prime Taken from just below the warp-in (the clouds were in the way), no Bloom. Even with Bloom set to low, most of the planet got glared out.

Kor-azor and Oris both are Very nice Sitting 1285 KM off the planet and it looks very impressive. Frame rate is still a solid 60 FPS so no change with the planet in the background.
Anyone got a planet list I am curious about other planets not using this model ?

Jupiter's rotation is just over 10 hours (the equator actually rotates faster, and the poles slower). Now ot's pretty simple to figure out how fast it takes to move one pixel in an image if you know the resolution - time per pixel is 10hours/Pi X image resolution.
So, if we imagine a 1080p resolution image of a jupiter like planet you'll be able to see about 1 pixel of motion every 5-10 seconds. Still a whole lot slower than what we see now, but observable to the patient (and god knows Eve has plenty of patient players).
If you measure the rotation of most of the planets in Eve right now they're spinning so fast they should fly apart.

I'm pretty sure it's a SCRUM Sprint thing. These are the planets that made the sprint deadline for the current SiSi build, and now the design team can work on getting another batch of worlds done for the next sprint deadline (two weeks?). -----

Maybe I can't appreciate it through screens and youtube vids, but it looks decidedly average for all the wait.
During the 2007 Fanfest they talked about Trinity II, and the future of planetary graphics. When people found out planets weren't going to be in, CCP suggested the delay of 6-12 months would mean more than upgraded "higher resolution spheres", even claiming they were working on volumetric planets with simulated cloud effects.
Visually this looks like the same thing we have now, only with more texture layers and higher texture resolutions. If thats the case, it brings their graphical quality on par with that of other sections in EVE. But the more I think about it, the more I feel Trinity 2 and DX9.0c in general should be a stepping stone to something better.

Very nice upgrade. Hopefully we can see cities and such on the surface as well.
And maybe one day there will be significant fleet fights at planets and they'll be/appear larger!

Fit MWD and burn towards the planet? Here are some pics of Matar. I think the warp in points should be moved at least to half the distance they are at the moment. The new graphics don't really shine from the normal warp in distance. 1 2 3 4 5

Is it just me or do all the prime planets just use the same texture and only have different lighting ?

Might be, the new textures are quite high res, so they haven't done more of them yet? I'd imagine the graphics artists are making them manually at the moment. If they wanted new textures for all planets, they'd really would need some kind of planet texture generator or something.

Completely agree! Too bad you can't use procedural textures, it would look much better @ all distances.

Unfortunately, the few new planets I've seen haven't looked very good. They're largely a bright blur on my screen despite the fact that I'm running 1680x1050 at max settings. I think they may need to change how HDR and bloom affect planets. -Wrayeth n00b Extraordinaire "Look, pa! I just contributed absolutely nothing to this thread!" |
